1970 NFC Playoff - Lions at Cowboys - Enhanced & Color-Corrected CBS Broadcast - 1080p/60fps

- I used Topaz Video AI to enhance the existing CBS broadcast of the 1970 Lions at Cowboys playoff. I upscaled/de-noised/sharpened/deblurred/de-haloed the footage, which resulted in a very nice improvement. The biggest upgrade however is the color correction I did in Da Vinci Resolve. The original broadcast recording had a VERY greenish hue to it which I've removed, getting the color back to how it should look.
The quality of the tape recording starts to degrade in the second half, getting especially worse in the 4th quarter.

Back in the day when Dallas wore silver/grey pants and not the light blue of today. Always thought this was a better look for the Cowboys.

The only shortcoming...only "error" the great Coach Landry made was waiting on Roger, then Alternating QB in '71 was unproductive.

I could not believe that halftime marching band and dancers, they were amazing, what nice young men and women they were, a far cry from the creeps we got running around todsy
My favorite part: At 6:51, a trumpet player played the National Anthem. If you listen closely, you can hear that the crowd sang along. Today, the National Anthem has become a showcase for B-rate country, pop, or hip-hop “stars,” and community participation is actively suppressed.
Absolute EXCELLENT work restoring this classic era NFC Playoff game! Colors are corrected and popping as they should. The Cowboys Blue and silver vs Detroit's "Honolulu Blue" and silver. Your work is always appreciated and enjoyed by me. The 1970 Cowboys "playoff trilogy" is now preserved respectfully for all to view in the future.

This was the Lions only postseason appearance between 1957 and 1982.
The Lions played in - and won - the post-season Bert Bell Benefit Bowl or “Playoff Bowl” in at the Orange Bowl in 1960, 1961 and 1962 in what was referred to as the “third place game” by players.

Craig Morton's performance against the Lions was so bad it was embarrassing. Yet Landry insisted on keeping Staubach on the bench. He made the same mistake again in Super Bowl V -- a mistake which I'm convinced cost Dallas the game.
Morton did just enough against SF (1 TD and no turnovers) the following week to "earn" a start in the SB. His pass percentage during the '70 playoffs may be one of the worst in playoffs history.
Agreed. I’ve always thought Roger would’ve won SB V for Dallas. I don’t understand why Landry stuck with Morton in these playoffs.
I wasn't even born till '72 and never saw Morton play, but looking at the stats and the context, there's no doubt why Landry had him playing. Craig was a 6-year veteran and had the third-best QB rating in the NFL that season at 89.8, behind only John Brodie (93.8) and Sonny Jurgensen (91.5). He threw just 7 interceptions in 12 regular season games while tossing 15 TD's. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the league that season. He completely sucked in the playoffs of course, dropping to just a 32.8 rating, but Dallas still made it to the Super Bowl, and they would've won that game had it not been for some iffy calls and some tipped passes that went the other way. Conversely, Staubach had started just 4 games IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER up to that point and hadn't had great stats in limited playing time in 1970, putting up just a 42.9 rating, throwing 8 interceptions against just 2 TDs in 82 attempts. Looking at it that way, you can understand why Landry had Morton in there. Yes he threw 3 picks in the Super Bowl, but the first two were off the hands of his receivers, and the final one was on the very last play of the game with 1 second left and he had no choice but to air it out. Heck Unitas threw 2 picks in limited time and Morrall threw one right to Howley in the end zone. At least Morton was in the vicinity of his receivers.
Good points, Dave. The regular season and stats dictated that Morton was the logical starter at that point. I guess I was relying on the benefit of hindsight with Roger’s future clutch performances (though he did lose two SBs himself). I too was born in 1972 and am thankful I reached “football consciousness” in 1977/8 just in time to catch the end of Roger’s career as it happened. My all-time sports hero.
Regular season stats are not as important as they're made out to be, especially when one considers the extent to which those stats were accumulated against mediocre (i.e. non-playoff caliber) teams. When the playoffs begin it's a whole new season. Morton's performance against Detroit proved how misleading his regular season stats were. That, combined with Staubach's exceptional running ability (Morton was an inanimate statue compared to him), should have been enough for Landry to give Staubach a shot in in the fourth quarter.

There are some bad guys playing in sports today but most are good guys, yes they make more money but they more accessible and there were bad guys who played years ago like Duane Thomas who the Cowboys couldn't get rid of fast enough.
Dave, I wanted to reiterate what a treasure these restored broadcasts are. I’m gradually working my way through them starting with the oldest. One note: TH-cam really goes overboard inserting their own ads on these, with frequent breaks lasting 35 or 40 seconds before you can skip past them. It really detracts from watching.

This was the first game I remember watching as a kid - and I wanted to see it again through my adult eyes. Hopefully my now better managed Lions will finally win some playoff games this year.
The only playoff game in the 70s for the Lions I believe; didn't manage this game very well.

What a shame the early 70’s late 60’s Lions were super talented teams. 34-19-3 under Joe Schmidt from 69-72. Take out 0-8 against the Vikings & all the losses of 5 points or less & they could have been incredible. They had horrible luck back then even as talented as they were. Case in point this game against Dallas!

This would turn out I believe to be Frank Gifford's final telecast for CBS. He would of course the following NFL season (1971) would take over a play-by-play voice for Monday Night Football and the rest was history.

This was the first Cowboy game my dad took me to. I was 12. Became a fan for life!
OMG!! Bob Lily took THREE offensive lineman back into the endzone, made the QB move into a sack and throws one line to the ground with one arm!!!! NEVER seen a DT TRIPLE teamed and still make the play. WOW, best DT EVER!!!
My all time DL would have Bob Lilly and Joe Greene as its defensive tackles. Lilly started every Dallas game during his 14-year career.
Donald does the triple team today and he doesn’t dwarf over guys like Lilly did

The Cowboys also won a game 6-2 a few weeks before this. Every one of the Cowboys' playoff games was an almost unwatchable rock fight. There should be a rule that if a playoff game ends 5-0, both teams are eliminated. It would have been a joke if this Dallas team had won the Super Bowl; they played ugly, ugly football and could only score on bad teams.

This is an amazing post. I was a senior in HS back then and vividly remember this season and the “blunder bowl” loss to the Colts in the SB. It was a tough end to a great season. Landry and the Boys at the time had the “never win the big one” moniker rather like today’s team. They only beat that the next year against Miami in New Orleans.
I called it "The Blooper Bowl".

Also his mannerisms remind me of another clip from this channel. I believe it showed Bernie Casey, a DB for Cleveland being called for a penalty near the goaline. He kicks the ground, then emphatically slams his helmet to the ground.

the ball tipped off his hands and Renfro was "Mel on the spot" for the INT which McCollough knew was the game ender, hence the helmet throw in frustration.
Then there was Bob Lilly tossing his helmet in SB V, after Jim O'Brien kicked the winning FG.

While he had dealt with the consequences of a knee injury from '70, Karras played throughout the '71 pre-season, and according to the guard who faced him in the last exhibition game, was as fierce an opponent he had faced throughout the schedule. However, according to other accounts, Karras was noticeably slower off the ball.
In any event, the two players who started in his spot during '71 didn't exactly distinguish themselves (though one was a rookie).

Interesting that you left the comercials in. I was only 7 when this game was played but I do remember the cigarette commercials being on TV. Funny how they banned the cigarette adds but have now replaced them with drug commercials! Now thats progress! Jeez. Keep up the great work!

Craig Morton was a decent quarterback for Dallas early on and later for Denver. He was in mobile and needed protection.
Its true, he was never a Roger Staubach, my all-time favorite, but did lead the Cowboys to the playoffs and a Super Bowl.

Shows how much the game has changed so much today. You would never have a 5 to 0 game today ! Current games are much more exciting . Both quarterbacks completing under 50 passing yards in the game . So many turnovers , less flags thrown by the refs , fascinating commercials . Goal posts in a different place . Those shadows and sunlit portions are a challenge for the cameras . Great job in bringing back a relic of the past. And OF COURSE - the LIONS LOSE ! - ( a Lions fans since 1957 )

Morton I think had an injury to his arm or shoulder early in 1970( I think Roger started the first regular season game) and he wasn’t the same after that. I was in the army at the time of this game. Watching the first half, I was surprised how little they used Duane Thomas in the first half.

Detroit's defense played great, but the Cowboy's defense was better. I watched this game live in 1970 but after 54 years, you tend to forget the things that happened that could have changed the outcome. What if Altie Taylor did not fumble in that first half drive and the Lions scored some points? Who knows? Coulda, woulda, shoulda, right. The video was so clear, it was great watching. Thank you, Dave, for posting this game.
Nicely done. That new software is doing yeoman's work to bring these old games back to life. In fact, it's so good, you might be able to edit in a few TDs to make this game higher-scoring.
Even enhanced, this game just looks weird to me. The shadows encompassing nearly the entire Cotton Bowl field, plus the artificial turf, almost make it seem like the game was played in a dome.
Funny, I've never looked at it that way, though I can certainly see it now that you've mentioned it. I think the problem is that, even with all the enhancing and color-correcting, the game has an unnatural hue that is an artifact of the age and quality of the source material. Maybe some superpowered piece of professional-grade software for restoring video could get it all the way back to the original, but I've never seen any video restoration that has managed that feat. You're getting as close or closer to anything I've seen and I just think that technology still hasn't come up with something perfect. Maybe AI restoration will eventually be that something perfect, but we're still probably a long way off from that.
The thing I find most distracting about the lighting in this game (and in Super Bowl XIII, as well), is that the stadium lights cast a very unpleasant yellow hue. It's almost certainly the lights they were using at the time. As I recall, the old sodium vapor lights were brighter, but had a distinctly yellow tone to them. I find it very unsatisfying to look at video or photos from this game or SB XIII for that reason.
@@GeorgeDamon This game with the extremely weird final score, the ineptitude of the offenses, the horrific shadows, the artificial turf, and the lack of excitement, doesn't exactly endear this one to me. It doesn't help either that the 'This Week in Pro Football' episode for 1970's first round of playoff games only survives with the audio missing, and the DET/DAL segment has actually been LOST, along with the SF/MIN playoff - only the CIN/BAL and MIA/OAK portions have survived. There is VERY sparse footage of this game publicly available otherwise from NFL Films, pretty much only existing in the Cowboy and Lion team films from that year.
I did of course adjust the coloring on this one, and I actually made it a tad warmer, as without it the colors felt way too 'cold'. On a lot of these older broadcasts, the commercials are often your better bet of dialing in the color. I knew I had pretty much gotten there when I looked at the Pepsi logo in the one commercial and it looked just about right.
Oh, I can certainly tell that you adjusted the coloring, because it looks a darn sight better than the original version. I think the ultimate problem is the lighting in the stadium at the time makes the colors look odd.
That's very smart to use the commercials to verify the colors, because those are filmed under controlled conditions. As long as the original footage isn't compromised, the commercials would give you a good benchmark. Strangely, when I convert my old VHS game tapes, I find the commercials look worse than the game action. That's probably the difference between something recorded on a home video recorder and something recorded on a network 1" tape master.

@thenatteringnaybob8642, According to Landry, Super Bowl V was the hardest hitting game he had ever witnessed, which is saying a lot. Two desperate teams desperate to redeem themselves, which led to what is so readily described as the Blunder Bowl or similar negative cutdowns.

I was 11 and the game was blacked out locally. Only had radio, hard to believe it wasn’t shown.
Yeah when I lived in South Florida back in the 70s and 80s that would happen with the Miami Dolphins unless some radio station or tv channel bought the rest of the tickets it would be blacked out, unbelievable.
That Dallas defense was incredible. 20 quarters in a row without giving up a touchdown?
I just looked it up, Walt Garrison passed away in October of 2023...I dont remember reading anything about it.
Interestingly, this game was not televised in Dallas. Those were back during the days of the “blackout“ rule. Since the game did not sell out in time, it was blacked out in the Dallas area. I remember listening to it on the radio and imagining how exciting it must’ve been to watch the game.

These vintage games are so interesting. Actual halftime performances, not studio garbage. Young Frank Glieber, Frank Gifford and Dick Stockton guys who all became staples of NFL broadcasting. And am I correct that the Ford LTD ad at halftime is voiced over by Rod Serling?

The more I watch this, I've seen this multiple times, because I remember this game as an eight-year-old, the more I admire Detroit's defense, which frankly played well enough to win. Just that the Lions' offense was guilty of too many mistakes against a very skilled Dallas defense. Was as close as Detroit got to the Super Bowl until this past season.

This was before every player now thinks they are superstars and pounds their chest when they just get a first down. Just irritates me that they do that. Act like you've been there before.

Detroit's Linebacking corps at that time were one of the best ever. And Dallas had some good ones too.
The Lions defensive team that year made plenty of quarterbacks look from bad to terrible. Morton was one of many. The Dallas defense the last half of 1970 was superb.. How many 5-0 games have anyone watched? Tough,excellent defensive battle.

I remember this as a tense, frustrating game to watch, with the Lions wearing their best uniform ever. Of note-- Frank Gifford would soon be gone from CBS, taking over as the play by play announcer for the 1971 season of ABC's Monday Night Football, replacing Keith Jackson.

I remember watching this game as a kid in our basement rec room, though I didn’t remember any specifics other than the final score. Not surprising I suppose given the nature of how it went. I love having the original commercials included. I don’t remember ever seeing an ad for Chesterfield cigarettes before.
Even the simple graphics were better to go along with all the simple broadcast in general. Who say's you can't go back?
