  • I've enhanced the 1978 Week 14 Patriots at Cowboys game. I upscaled, denoised, sharpened, and doubled the framerate with Topaz. I then used Da Vinci Resolve to adjust the contrast and to really boost the color. Looks like a master tape now! See the before/after screenshots here -- imgbox.com/g/V... -- My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project.

In the latter part of this video which cutaway to the Houston-Pittsburgh game, seeing QB Gifford Nielsen warming up, with #42 teammate doing the ball catching during the warmup . . . the reason for the QB not catching the ball in warmup: Taking precaution of not jamming/spraining a finger if he was to catch the football.
That bit of trivia I learned from reading George Plimpton's book: "Paper Lion," as Plimpton, being a writer, got the chance to experience and document the experience of being a pro-football QB walk-on.

Now that I watch it as an adult, I can't imagine being a fan back then, watching a great quarterback like Steve Grogan putting a ball where it needs to be, and the receivers either not making the catches, or just fumbling the ball so much. Like what the heck am I watching, this crazy elastic man with the goggles making all these crazy one handed catches. Funny thing is he could have used stickem but didn't, it would have gone so well with the uniform. It looked horrible on Lester in the silver and black. Of course Earl and Tony D were some of my other favorites.

Watched this one when i happened. You see the origins of some things common to today's game. The "shotgun", multiple shifts, etc. John Hannah vs Randy White is a classic strength on strength battle. Two great defenses, etc. Also refreshing to see no challenges constantly slowing down the game, even though NE got burned on the Laidlaw fumble. Sgaubach set a Dallas record with 3,000+ yards in that game. Today, with the defensive backs essentially helpless, not getting 4,000 yards will send a QB off to run a fruit stand in S. Florida. Both Enberg and Olsen misidentified Laidlaw for Dorsett on the flee-flicker. Couldn't even get it right on the slow motion replay.

LOL listening to the announcer's go on about Chuck Fairbanks. The Patriots had a very good team. The week before their divisional playoff game against Houston. Fairbanks announced he was leaving to go coach Colorado University where he later failed. Ownership stupidly let Fairbanks coach the playoff game and the Oilers blew out the Patriots ruining a good team.

The snootiness of Gumbel's persona got worse when he became the main anchor for NBC's Today Show; with his condescending _I'm a serious journalist_ smug attitude.

I have no idea why one would take Ed “Too Tall” Jones’ comment about liking to play in the “big games” as meaning he didn’t go all out in other games. (Last time I checked adrenaline was a thing and “upping” your game when it counts most is not supposed to be a flaw.
Also, the number of interceptions and batted balls his 6’9 frame caused was unreal, and anyone who had to play against him every year would be happy to tell you how good he was during his fine 16 year career even if he was noted voted All Pro or to the Pro Ball as often as he probably should have been.

Dallas got the benefit of a couple blown calls late in the game, but if the Patriots had made their FGs in the first half, the calls wouldn't have mattered.

I was 12 years old at the time, and watched these games quite frequently. I guess we were just conditioned to remember the down and the score and guess how much time remained on the clock. It's stunning as well just how infrequently the score/down or either shown or announced. And as much as people praise Roon Arledge and the other great pioneers of televised sports, their achievements remained flawed in as much as they completely overlooked these aspects of the game. It's hard to believe that it took over two decades of televised football (and even longer with baseball) before someone -- David Hill, an Australian soccer and rugby producer hired by Fox Sports -- to make these adjustments in the early 90s.

I wonder how much was a deliberate delaying of that technology. if you didnt know the score or time...chances are you will linger watching the game until it gets mentioned. And who knows by then maybe you decide to keep watching...the mystery of not immediately knowing reeled viewers in

My favorite era of football, this is what I watched growing up. On a different note, what is up with the "T" on Staubach's nameplate? It's almost as tall as Ed Jones lol. Great game, so many awesome players! Thanks for posting.

Anyone notice one of the offensive coaches for Dallas? None other than future former Chicago Bears H.C. Mike Ditka.

Try watching only 73 John Hannah LG for every Patriot offensive play. He is devastating.
