"Talking to strangers" is a book which depicts the complexities we face in understanding the nature of strangers. The author goes from stories and case studies of world best spies to the increasing suicides and crime rates. He infers that it is almost impossible to comprehend a stranger. This is a vast book covering vast levels of social and psychological topics which are missunderstood most of the time. I think everyone should read it. There's alot to learn in this book.
This chap is so good that even when you give him a blank piece of paper, he'll write a book on it. Amazing how he finds such rare topics and go about exploring them!
I watched about 5 minutes then turned it off. It was lame in the 90s when it came out, one step above "Threes Company" why people watch that kind of brain poisoning is the question.
I had a civics teacher who prided herself on her unerring ability to judge people and she said than an entire demographic of students were habitual liars because they wouldn't look her in the eye when they spoke to her. Of course, this entire demographic of students had been raised to treat looking directly at adults as disrespectful. In this example, the only members of that group she needed to be wary of were those she most likely would have trusted.
Paul Ekman was the advisor to the show and he co- discovered micro-expressions. The show was factually a correct but the time span to solve the case was compressed to be able to wrap up the crime in 1 hour. In really life the span for solving could be weeks, months and even years. Dr Ekman has many books out but take a look at "Telling Lies: Clues to Deceit". It's fascinating stuff!
Hugo Bacelar Yes and no. It is possible to read ppl like that but NOT AT ALL how they show it in the show. The person can’t know that you are reading them. The way that the main character does it would be completely useless. He’s way too in their face. He’d have to observe them at an at ease state. So they would give things away without knowing it. But this isn’t what I think Gladwell meant. I think he meant it more in an “gut reaction” sort of way. And, unless honed, can be very misleading. I wouldn’t be surprised that in the book, if he says our own ideas and conceptions influence us more than what we know. That we see what we want to see. That’s pure speculation thou. Just saying based on what he’s written before. His style of giving information. Just a guess thou.

This is what I miss about Craig Ferguson (of the Late Lata Show with Craig Ferguson who was on before James Corden took over): Craig used to interview people who weren’t actors/directors. So many interesting interviews were made in that show.
This summed up what I've finally started to understand over the past couple of years. So much of the time, the way actors emote on-screen are exaggerated and unrealistic; their expressions look so genuine that they're actually disingenuous. People are far more subtle and nuanced in real life, and if you use performed content as a model for communication you will probably be considered phony.
His books were life changing for me. Several of his podcasts in Revisionist History rank as some of my all time favorites. Brilliant guy that allows me to understand complicated stuff. My favorite non-fiction author.

The mismatched thing is very interesting. I can self diagnose that when I first meet someone (especially a potential employer or client) I am perfectly matched. But once I am comfortable with someone I am the person with arms crossed and a frown that is happy and having a great time.
Where do you live? Most strangers I cross paths with are engaging and bring a new awareness. Meaningful encounters, at times just as transformative as an interchange with a good friend.

Took the family to hear him talk in San Mateo (thank you UC Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz bookshop) this past Saturday. He was absolutely brilliant, and hilarious. I can't remember when I was so engaged by what someone was saying, and at the same time laughing so much. If you get a chance to see him in person definitely go, and bring your loved ones along because they'll Thank you.
I think the vast majority of people understand that Friends/sitcoms are not like the real world. I mean it's scripted, there's a laugh track, all the jokes work, there are no awkward silences, every minute is interesting, everyone is relevant... In fact the reason people like the show is precisely because it's NOT like real life, it's much more fun.

I have long had reflections on the fact that in today's era of media obsession, social media power, we are extremely vulnerable to believe in false accusations plus wrong and consequently tragic 'reading' of other people, because social media is conducive to fast and thoughtless judgment and spreading of stereotypical thinking about others, strangers. I like the points that were made, but to be fair, Judge Judy doesn’t just determine who is lying and who is not. She has to base her ruling on the strength of the evidence presented and the testimony given. I had no idea what to expect from this video. At the beginning, I thought it would be boring. At the moment I was going to click away from this, it turned into one of the more fascinating conversations I've ever seen. I really feel like I've learned something. I am not familiar with any of Malcolm Gladwell's work (though I've heard the name before) but he is very interesting!
Funny! But it works for him, like the clothing he wore. He looks trustworthy. He's playing the eccentric, funny, trustworthy genius. Picture his character in a movie-- that's who he'd be. Whatever he advises Bond, you'd believe.
I listened to the audiobook, it was an amazing experience I enjoyed every minute of it. His narration was so engaging and raised the bar for the way audiobooks are produced in my opinion.
The problem with Malcolm Gladwell is so much of what he says is "everyone is wrong about everything except I've figured it all out"... then a few years later he'll be like "Oh, I may've been wrong about that thing I said." Dude still hasn't figured out Presentation For the Situation...I'm relatively certain he's not more expert at reading human behavior than the other experts.
Re "matched." He's referring to congruence or in-congruence or our various aspects visual, verbal, etc.. Applies to self-self and self-other. Basically all decoded by NLP originators in the late 70s. Still valid and worth learning now.

The meaning of words change organically. Eventually dictionaries will record the current meaning of words... as used by the majority.
You can stop pretending that dictionaries, or any specific dictionary, are lawbooks or the gospel.
I wouldn't say interacting differently with a stranger is a "mistake" but a learning experience.

I like the points that were made, but to be fair, Judge Judy doesn’t just determine who is lying and who is not. She has to base her ruling on the strength of the evidence presented and the testimony given. It either makes sense or doesn’t, falls within the law or doesn’t. “Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining.”

Matthew Alkman well I haven’t read his book yet but I also don’t agree with everything he’s saying . I don’t think he’s an idiot though.He also said jimmy is equally matched when doing an interview but he’s a talk show host....he can’t have an interesting tv show if he doesn’t fake some of the laughs. I mean if he’s faking a laugh then that’s not how he really feels inside...just like an actor...they’re faking emotions.
If you think you can see which people are lying or not, it just means you are probably up for some nasty surprises in your life... 🙄

Yes, his utterances are more important in most ways, but I perceive that he cares a great deal about his appearance himself, and cultivates his look very carefully.

BLINK is one of his more underrated books. Absolutely love it. People talk about Outliers and Tipping Point. But Blink had me hooked.

I had no idea what to expect from this video. At the beginning, I thought it would be boring. At the moment I was going to click away from this, it turned into one of the more fascinating conversations I've ever seen. I really feel like I've learned something. I am not familiar with any of Malcolm Gladwell's work (though I've heard the name before) but he is very interesting!

I listened to the audiobook, it was an amazing experience I enjoyed every minute of it. His narration was so engaging and raised the bar for the way audiobooks are produced in my opinion.
The problem with Malcolm Gladwell is so much of what he says is "everyone is wrong about everything except I've figured it all out"... then a few years later he'll be like "Oh, I may've been wrong about that thing I said." Dude still hasn't figured out Presentation For the Situation...I'm relatively certain he's not more expert at reading human behavior than the other experts.
The moment I saw him I didn’t even care about the interview anymore...I knew the comments would be fire and I was not disappointed!!!

Re "matched." He's referring to congruence or in-congruence or our various aspects visual, verbal, etc.. Applies to self-self and self-other. Basically all decoded by NLP originators in the late 70s. Still valid and worth learning now.

I don't know that most of needed him to tell us that 'Friends" is not a depiction of how people are in real life. It's a sitcom, and the characters and plots are absurd to make us laugh. WE ALREADY KNOW THAT.

This guy is speaking of something many don't comprehend. This is something a few are born with, few people are able to read other's like a book, just by looking at their faces. Looking at a persons face, could reveal, their past like you where there.
