My wife's Grandma named Virginia just passed away, this song hits way different now.
Heard this on the radio and instantly loved it!!! I think I’ve played it about 50 times already. I love the mix, the voices, the music - just all of it!!! It tugs at my heartstrings and I’ve never even been to Virginia. But we can all relate on some level in that our hometowns are just not the same anymore. It’s weird to go home and see so many changes. Regardless, this is one amazing, beautiful, heartfelt song. 💓💓💓💓

In 2016, I moved back to my childhood home after living overseas in London for several years. The first time I heard this song, I became obsessed with it and did my usual thing of looking up the lyrics. That’s when I remembered y’all’s connection to VA/Richmond, and the song hit me a thousand times harder.
On the next play through, I found myself being moved to tears. I realized that I was mourning my life overseas and all the great friends I’d made, who I used to see every day (and are now 5,000 miles away). Sure, I can FaceTime with them, but it’s not the same. I miss meeting them at the pub and being in the same room with them.
And the hometown I came back to was not the same place I’d left thirty years ago as a teenager. It felt empty, lonely, and unrecognizable. Even though it was my spiritual home, the whole city felt indifferent to me. Like it had moved on. All my old loves and memories were ancient history, and I was a stranger without a place to really call “home.”
Thank you guys for writing this piece. It’s moved me in a way a song hasn’t for a very long time.

Had this on repeat for the last couple of days. My "Virginia" is Mobile, AL. I lost my mom a couple of days ago, but she lived here my whole life. This place will always be home, but feels empty now without her. I've been driving around the last couple days and it's amazing how different things you've seen 1,000 times can suddenly look in someone's absence.

I’m a janitor and was listening to this song at work really thinking nothing of it when suddenly I thought of that time three years ago when me and my boyfriend at the time were eating McDonald’s in his car complaining about how tough things were on thanksgiving and how no one cared about us. We were both jobless and I was kicked out of his house sleeping in his car. And the part where it talks about her dancing in his first apartment well 6 months of sleeping in his car and I was able to find a homeless shelter when family couldn’t take me in. I left the shelter after a year because the staff found me an apartment. Three years later and I’m so happy and blessed. Looked this band up to see if they’d be playing here in CA and was so excited to see they would be playing I had my ex buy tickets sense my rent is so high 😂 but I’m gonna pay him back lol and that’s pretty much my story at 1:30am.
I always said I’d go back to the shelter to visit my favorite staff I think it may be time to just park of there and listen to The head and The Heart for a while in my ex’s car it’s time.

Is the song about a place or a person? I suppose that doesn't matter. The song is so deeply soul stirring. Caused me to cry buckets of rain until my tear ducts gave out... for tonight. And that cleansing of heart and head-felt grief and remembrance is most needed.... folks, we ought to know that grief for loves lost will continue with us. Grieving is a lifelong endeavor. Let us keep space in our heads and hearts for grieving. Such acknowledgement of what is precious for each of us, affirms our compassion.

After 12 years travelling around the country I wanted to move home so bad. When I finally did I realized that everything I missed was gone; my old friends had moved away, my old hangouts had closed, I had a totally different job. I missed something that wasn't even there.
