What a great find, the waste from old laptops has bugged me for years. Now it turns out I don't need to buy new monitors for my Raspberry Pi4, I will diy them from old laptops.
Great use for old laptop screens! Unfortunately the converter and power adapter seem to cost as much as a bigger/used LCD desktop monitor. Two suggestions for the cable placement: - if you make a rectangular/circular hole in the middle of the clipboard to pass the LCD cable through, it will not be visible in the bottom. - if the controller board is placed closer to the middle of the clipboard, the VGA/HDMi/DVI cable will not be visible on the side.
What converter and power adaptar do you mean? i jus ordered the controller and you can use the laptop charger that came with it to power the controller i believe, all costing me less than 30 bucks
@@Zeussxs Laptop power adapters are usually 18v to 21v, and the search I did for controller boards seems to indicate that they work with 12v. Might be wrong, tough.
It's true. I found adapters costing as much as a new monitor. I had a bad experience with AliExpress but I think they have cheaper options. Might be the way to go. Amazon prices for the adapters are sky-high.
Such a simple solution and idea. My old laptop monitor was good quality so I've salvaged it the same way. Works perfectly and saves 70/80 euros compared to buying a new screen. Thanks
The stupid thing is that every laptop i damaged is because of broken display This time was different, ridiculous specs of the laptop in this times, got bluescreens and random video failures, but the display is okay
You've gained a sub, your commentary is great, it brings life to the video, and the video itself is phenomenal, I kept looking for DIY monitors but none were as detailed as this, thank you!
Great idea! So many laptops scrapped - so many opportunities to recycle. The only downside - the cost of the controllers and transformers - but still a great idea!
ok, I had this idea in my head for some time already. Never executed it cause did not know how to. But you helped me out a lot. Thanks a lot. It is a great way to give a new purpose an old screen
Thank you I followed your video and I have successfully made my own 2nd monitor!!! I left the housing because it was mostly intact. All I have to make now is a stand..
Great video! I have at least three junked laptops around the house and you've given me a fun DIY project. Props for re-using everything you could, from the clipboard to the standoffs. Nice job 🙂
Thanks for sharing!! I am wanting to use something like this for my Raspberry Pi!!! I have replaced screens on a laptop, but never removed one from a bad PC to use as an extra monitor. This will be very helpful to me for adding a display to my Pi.
Bro so worth it!!! I have 4 laptops with functional screens but crapped out cpu, I'm a gamer as well as an electronic salvager. So any new way I can reuse components to make useful devices is a huge help.
Fantastic! ... just Fantastic. I have many of these - from many years of using and retiring (hooding?! :) laptops. Now those old screens will have NEW life. Thanks to you. Keep up the good work.
Thank for posting this. I always wanted to reuse the displays from old laptops but never new you could buy controller boards for them to give them standard hdmi/dvi inputs.
Great, I've seen many videos on this and this was the most comprehensive. I think it's a great idea I have laptops of various quality screens. I don't need a new high Res monitor o have one but I could do with a few more test monitors for example a raspberry pi, or my server. Kudos dude.
This is a great DIY video. Thanks for posting this. I will probably just look for a used monitor online though. Once i seen what the cost for these boards, its about the same for a cheap monitor. I may use this setup for another project so thanks for posting this.
@@tennishistoryandresultsdat4540 The idea for that video was to show someone how they could take a used laptop screen and convert it to a standing monitor for eother a desktop or for a laptop that has a way to connect to a external screen. I have aboit 10 screens I salvaged from old laptops that are outdated and not worth using. That board then was $25 without the power supply. I was going to build one to use with my laptop cause my screen when out. The cost of a new screen for my laptop only costed me was 46 with free shipping. Now something like this will help me to build arcades since I have been hoarding screens and parts for them for the past 3 years. This would make them light weight and cheaper for me to build cause I could have them up and running for only $25. My intentions were to build bartop arcadesl. I just never started it when all the stuff hit the fan back in 2020 and shut everything down. Great video though.
Great video. Was searching for something else but somehow landed here. Glad to see now i reuse my old laptop's screen which was sitting and piling dusk. That screen will become my travel secondary monitor now :-) Thank you!
I have three laptops you gave me such an amazing idea of how to upcycle the screens and I'm going to make it in a way that people are going to love it and I'm going to sell them. I'm going to turn mine into a picture frame a monitor I'm going to have all types that uses for it. I'm going to design it in a way to where would be a decoration thank you for putting this out there really appreciate this
This is an awesome idea. I have an old all in one that i want to use the screen from to map an RPG map display case for easy light travel! I’ll use some light weight wood to make a holding case.
I absolutely love it when a crazy idea I get in my mind , eg I had a Toshiba laptop , not worth replacing the screen, but it still served a purpose when Im doing a PC build , then I had a Fried Laptops motherboard where it was polorised with some Wally adding 240 volts 🙄 into the main CPU , asked if I could repair a literal bonfire ! Cut a long , this Advent and my Toshiba in my shack worked perfect using this tech , so it's awesome when ya wild thoughts actually aren't ,and it proves it ere , great video buddy , today's tech , manufacturers DONT want us able to repair nowadays , wel tough Sxxt Toshiba , I don't need to spend £100 quid yet !!! That's the going rate of a ok Upgradeable W7 satellite Pro,,, good job man 🙏🙏
The idea is fantastic, excellent but my opinion instead of passing the cable through the front of the screen, you would have made a hole and pass the cable behind so that it is not visible and for the electronic card use an acrylic box for mounting on the wall, for protection of the same circuit.
nice video - i acquired an asus laptop on facebook that was working but dated, slow and no longer wanted - i took it apart and got the working 15.6" screen off of it. The laptop lid is still in good order and I am planning on keeping the LCD in the ASUS lid. I have the parts on order now including the tablet stand - neat idea - thanks. I am planning on fixing this up and being able to carry it on trips with me so i have a 2nd monitor when working from hotel rooms or otherwise on the road. Wish me luck - I'll see if i can share a photo or two of it when i have it finished!

What is source of Power? Is any power adapter needed? If so then which adapter suitable for it?
Will this work for touch screen monitors?
@@Eduardo_Espinoza If the LVDS controller you get is touch screen capable and the screen as well then it should not be a problem IMO.
