    I was reading astrophysics lecture notes the other day and it said "neglecting all constants of order unity" and straight up binned a factor of ~3 in the process. Not as in, we moved to a system of units such that it disappeared, or we cancelled it out. We just deleted 3 and called it a good estimate.

    The reason engineers don't need to be precise is because they just build stuff to a level of safety well above what they need it to be, so that way they don't precision

    • @Guztav1337
      @Guztav1337 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And when they fail to calculate, they go to jail.

    • @yt_nh9347
      @yt_nh9347 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your explanation is correct but there is also a need to be accurate because if you calculate the "required" safety level incorrectly then your error buffer in design may not be adequate. For example in power engineering where they regularly work with transmission voltages of 275 kV, a small discrepancy will have a large influence on the results.
      But no one really approximates pi or e since its available as a button on a calculator and on all calculation/modelling software suites so i'm not sure why its a meme

    • @Guztav1337
      @Guztav1337 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      >"But no one really approximates pi"
      Not for real world calculating, but for example quick cricle circumference aprox, it works fine to say 3.

      u is sometime used to indicate position. A double dot above a variable is newtonian notation for a second derivative with respect to that variable. So u double-dot is acceleration.

    • @4001Jester
      @4001Jester 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh Schilmeister a double dot is not the second derivative with respect to that variable (position in this case). the dot derivative notation is reserved for derivatives with respect to time

    I never understood sin(x) = x. All I ever got was sin(x in degrees) = x in radians, and its not even off, it's like almost identical. The only small angle approximation I learned was sinx = tanx as long as it's below 15 degrees.

    • @curiousturtle8260
      @curiousturtle8260 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      sin(x) = x is the first order Taylor polynomial approximation for sin(x). It's only accurate for small values of x, thus the small angle approximation.
