Wow the basket looks lovely! We were taught how to make a basket by Kit from Queen Elizabeth Dolls House at Coventry Miniatura last month. We used embroidery floss then applied a watered down pva solution afterwards which was a cheap alternative to the linen thread. I’ve admired your basket collection for years, you have some beautiful artisan pieces! Thank you as always for sharing your knowledge. Xxxx love from Nottingham, England ❤
That sounds like a great alternative. Thank you for the tip! The watered-down PVA glue is a wonderful stiffener and helps to keep everything together. I should write all of the tips down before I start on another basket! Thank you Wendy! 😃
That looks really lovely and stylish. I haven't had much luck with basket making so now I just tend to ask Jen Horner to make them for me when I need one, but I would love to learn the skill in future. I was gifted a very large industrial spool of a dark waxed linen thread a while ago so I really must learn! (And now I appreciate the value of the gift!!!)
That's a great gift! I love having materials available to me and then one day come up with a use for them.
Yes, Jen's work is absolutely lovely! Maybe one day she'll start teaching basket making, wouldn't that be good! 😃
What a cute little basket!
Tip: if you are working with an even number of stakes, you can also use two threads, and weave them alternating
Ah yes of course! Thanks Marie-Louise, good tip!
Корзинки супер! Спасибо за урок) все корзинки очень красивые.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you Галина! 😃
Hello Josje, lovely video. I will save it because I want to make a basket with you. I really enjoy watching you create. If this was not considered a tutorial, ❤ sorry you will be my tutor in basket making😊 in my near future, lol. The basket looks so lovely. Thank you Darling. 🥰
My pleasure! It wasn't a tutorial as I really don't know what I'm doing either, I'm experimenting 😄 But I learned a lot in the process so I figured others might too. I hope you'll make your basket. Thanks so much! 😃
Stunning . Beautiful work and patience. I was mesmerised..❤
Thank you so much 😀
Yes, it is such a shame that waxed linen thread is so expensive, it is nice for many things. Here in the US you can get hemp cord in various sizes for less, or even use DMC embroidery thread…with a piece of beeswax, you wax any thread to make the weaving easier.
I was wondering about that! I'll have to give that a try. Unwaxed linen thread is not too expensive so I'll get some of that and experiment. Thanks for the idea Carmen! 😃
Hi Josje, I ordered the same waxed linen thread on-line during lock-down and accepted that it was very expensive but my biggest shock was getting in the post and realising that it was just the size of a standard spool of thread.😂 (lesson…always read the fine print) I put it in a safe place waiting for a worthy project and thanks to your video I now have one. The cheap garden twine you used for the log basket makes it look very realistic because it is a bit rougher.
Hahaha! Yes it is very tricky to order online sometimes. Much better to see it in person. But it is very convenient and during lockdown it was our only option.
I did like the garden twine, it's just a completely different look and not suitable for a tiny basket like this of course. But it's fun to play with different materials. I will try some other types of threads in the future.
Thanks Coby! 😃
Hi, love that we are learning with you and getting a heads up on what can go wrong. Thank you. J
My pleasure Janine! Learn from my mistakes 😉
Josje you basket turned out adorable! Maybe next basket can have a braided top to cover up the cut off wire on the edge. To make longer handles you can insert a longer wire each side once you start weaving on the sides then take the wire bending to the opposite sides, you do not have to include it when making the bottom. It will holds well. Love the cat also.😊
Thank you Jane! I didn't want a braided top on this one but I have another basket in mind where it will look really nice. Thank you for the tip on the handles! I just wondered if you can tell there's an extra wire in there, as one of the spines (? I don't know what they're called) will be twice as thick as the rest. It could be used as a design feature. Lots to learn. 😃
I always look forvard to and enjoy your videos. Though I have a bit of basket weaving experience, I can learn something from your struggles in miniature. I would never have thought of glueing on a rim like you did, because life sized baskets are supposed to be sturdy, but it is actually a real possibility in miniature, which I will remeber :)
Keep up the good work ❤
Thank you so much! Yes, in miniature you can get away with something like gluing on a rim 😅
Beautyfull 😊 I fell in love with the Kitten in the basket ❤. My Kitten love to hide and slepp in baskets, so suddenly the miniature world became reality - sort of 😅. Greetings from Denmark
Thank you Nette! Yes, cats do love to sit in baskets and boxes, don't they? 😃 🐈⬛
Your basket turned out so cute. I remember, years ago, the linen thread was called Irish waxed linen carpet thread. I believe it did come from Ireland. Looking online there is still carpet thread for sale in different ply, at various prices. The wire also comes in white here. In the making, of a my few mini baskets, I found using a blunt nosed darning needle came in handy. I think I'll have to pull out my wicker making stuff again and make another basket as well. LOL Thanks for the video, I always look forward for them. 🧺🧺
Well, because of you I just spent hours on Temu. My goodness, that's a rabbit hole! 😅 I googled 'Irish waxed linen carpet thread' and that's where I ended up. I didn't find it and didn't buy anything, but wow, talk about temptation! 😂
Blunt-nosed darning needles would be good, but I only have really long ones with a big enough hole for the thread to fit through.
Carmen mentioned using beeswax on regular cotton or flax, so I will try that and some other options. Yes! Make some baskets! 😃
@@MakeMiniatures So many different threads can be used. A friend of mine made gorgeous baskets using crocheting threads, not waxed but it kept it's shape. Some hobby boat rigging cord is also nice. I bought some in Holland thinking I would use it for weaving chair seats. Not waxed though. (no I haven't done that yet either😧)
I agree! Basically, if it's a thread you can weave with it. I have some of that hobby boat rigging cord too, but not a lot. I think buttonhole thread or top stitch thread would work great as well.
Your basket is absolutely beautiful. I love the way you did the handles.. What I have done, instead of using the waxed thread which is more expensive, I just buy the thread I need in the right size, then if I want it a different color I run it through some acrylic paint of that color and let it dry. It then is the right texture for weaving. It's messy, but it works. If the thread is already the color you want, then just run it through some tacky glue and let it dry.
That's a great idea, thank you! I have used acrylic paint for dying/painting fibres and fabric before and it always worked well. It does get a little bit stiff, but as you said it then has the right texture for weaving. So yes, great idea! I'll have to try it! Thanks Shari! 😃
@@MakeMiniatures My pleasure. I hope it works out well for you too.
We'll see 😃
What a beautiful little basket Josje, love how it turned out, something I will try, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧
Thank you Julie! Have fun with it! 😃
Your creations are stunning 👍😊 we all learn from our crafts mistakes when creating something new 😊 thats what I love about crafting. Looking forward to seeing more videos.
Thank you so much! That little bit of experimenting and learning is the most fun I think. 😃
I think I've seen these florist wires in white as well as green. That would at least be less noticeable with the light colors you are using.
I think that in regular basket making, they would weave the pieces together to form that initial square rather than gluing like you did here.
It's a cute basket though and I like the combination of wire and waxed thread for miniature baskets.
I've now found the florist wire in white and brown (and green of course).
Haha yes, I think you're right about the real basket makers not using glue. There will probably be a correct way to hold them when starting that initial square, I just couldn't get it right without the glue.😉
Thank you Stephanie! 😃
Josje you really do not notice one extra wire other than one top to bottom row will be slightly larger in width. Squeezing it with the tweezers helps if needed. I have made a complete set of wicker chair/stool/planter with the materials you have used. They came out wonderful - but TENSION when weaving is everything for proper spacing. To start a circle, use 2 wires crossed over, weave 2 rows then insert half extra wires, weave another 2 rows, then insert the rest of the wires. Then continue weaving. Just like basket weaving in full scale.
Thank you for the mini-lesson! I should really look into full-scale basket weaving to understand more about it. I do like the wicker furniture, so maybe one day I'll venture into that as well. There is/was a French maker who made the most beautiful wicker garden chairs, loungers etc. I haven't seen her for a while now. I should have bought some of her work back then. Now I'll just have to make it myself 😉
That basket is beautiful. I hope to make one someday. ❤
You should! Thanks Connie 😃
It looks really lovely, and I love the cat in the basket. Typical cat behaviour.
Thank you Ulrike! I like the cat in the basket too 😃 🐈
Beautiful work! The bread is lovely too: did you make it? And I loved the little kitty in the basket at the end, and the wonderful lillies!! Gorgeous! Thank you again for a lovely film. kindest regards, k
I did not make the bread and unfortunately, I don't know who did. It looks delicious though, doesn't it? Thank you so much Kat! 😃
That turned out very nice!
Thank you Barb! 😃
Absolutely gorgeous, you are so talented 😊
Thank you so much Karen 😊
Im in the the states. Seems like everything is getting so expensive. Love your work. Warm Wishes from Los Angeles Dale
There is also a thread covered wire that works great. And to paint it you can put rubber glove on put the paint on a sponge and fold it around the wire and pull the wire through. 😉
Thank you so much Dale! Yes, it's a pity some things have become so expensive these past few years. 👋
That's a very good idea. I must remember that 😃 I'll look for the thread-covered wire too. Thanks Dale!
Very nice. You did a beautiful job.
Thank you! Much appreciated 😃
Hello Josje, your basket is lovely,
Have you ever seen the channel Johanna K's mini life ? She makes all sorts of baskets weave things including furniture, they are really good, have a lovely weekend,
Best wishes from Yorkshire, England 🇬🇧 😊
I don't know the channel, but I'll have a look. Sounds interesting! Thank you Diane! 😃
This is absolutely adorable!
Thank you Jen! 😃
What is your favorite piece and why? Happy birthday in advance! 🎉😊
Thank you!! 😊 And thank you for your question! 👍
🎉hiya 🎉
Hi Dorothy 👋 😃
Loved this video. I have been weaving a mini basket and it is a learning process. Thanks for all of your great work. Did you ever get a copy of the MFA Boston book from the show? If not, I would be happy to send you one,
Not yet! I have a friend who said he'd get me one though. I'll ask him about it. If he can't get it I would very much appreciate it if I could get a copy sent by you. I'll let you know Denise. Thank you so much for the offer, I appreciate it very much! 😃
@@MakeMiniatures It would be my pleasure, so just let me know and have a great day Josje!
I have been obsessed with miniature basket weaving. I have been able to make several baskets with mixed results. In June, I’m taking a basket weaving class with Lidi Stroud at Guild, School. By the way, I left you a private message on your Instagram account with a question.
That sounds like a wonderful class Rafael! Lidi is a great basket weaver.
I don't see your message on my Instagram account. Did you send it to the right one? It's josje.bouwt
😃
@@MakeMiniatures I just check and noticed the following message “This account can't receive your message because they don't allow new message requests from “
This was my original message “ Hi Josje, my name is Rafa. I follow you here on Instagram and TH-cam. I always love watching your videos. I just took over the social media accounts for the Good Sam Showcase of Miniatures in San Jose, California. I'm featuring the vendors that are going to attend the show in October. I stumbled on your silver milk jug made by Pete Acquisto. I love your picture of you holding it on your finger. Would it be okay to use your image in the post I’m creating for Pete?”
Hi Raf, thank you for asking. You can use the photo for that post. Please do credit and tag/link me for the photo. For any other use of the photo, please ask me again. Sorry for being a bit strict, but I've had some problems with unauthorized use of my photos in the past.
Good luck with all the social media accounts. It's quite the task! 😃
You had so much patience with this basket. I would have given up on it. But it turned out very well. I'd love to know where you got the cat in the thumbnail of this video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Tina! The cat came from my friend Elly's collection. She bought it 9 years ago on eBay from the maker Reve or * reve * . I don't know if the maker is still active, but here's a link to Reve's gallery: www.deviantart.com/reveminiatures 😃
Thanks so much for your help, Josje.
@@TinaOsborne-wb7sb You're welcome Tina.
Your attention to detail is amazing! If you don't mind telling us, how long did it take to make that basket?
Thank you Melnie! I'm not sure, but at least 5 or 6 hours I'd say. But that's with figuring out what to do, getting the materials ready and trying to film. Once you know what to do it doesn't take that long. I think it would take about 3 hours. 😃
@@MakeMiniatures I truly thought it took at least double that amount of time. All the weaving, etc. Lovely job!
The weaving itself doesn't take that long, it's all the preparing and finishing that takes time. 😃
Hahaha, geweldig! Veel plezier ermee! 😃
Where does one obtain waxed linen thread, please?
I bought it at a fair, but I googled it and found it on many sites like Etsy, Amazon, Temu etc. The one I used is a two-ply waxed linen. 😃
@@MakeMiniatures Thank you for the reply. Enjoy spring.
