    When I started learning Korean, the VERY first thing I learned was the Korean alphabet, as in the characters, even before I learned how to say hello. It was a good decision on my part, because now I can read anything in Korean (even if I don't know what it means yet), and I didn't get stuck relying on romanization. When learning a new word I actually ignore any romanization I see and focus on the characters instead because they make more sense to me than the romanization! Romanization throws me off because it really doesn't sound the same as the actual Korean word, and the characters are easier to read and understand, tbqh! My advice to anyone just getting into Korean is to ditch the romanization asap, you'll be glad you did! You can learn the alphabet in just a few days if you practice frequently and/or use flashcards. There are so many good sources these days. You can google it and print out some worksheets (free), you can download an app like duolingo (free), and there are also community tutors for low prices on italki.com. If you're serious about learning Korean, then start learning how to read/pronounce Korean characters right away. It will help you learn much faster, and your pronunciation will be so much better!

      Yeah, I saw the romanizations on some song lyric translations, but I immediately noticed there was no correlation between the spelling and how the words were being pronounced. So I started listening really carefully and repeating what I heard. Then I got tired of that and decided, "I wanna learn to read, write, and speak Hangul!" So I looked up videos on the Hangul alphabet and it makes it soooooooo much easier.

    Lovely gentle lesson. One comment from a native, advanced English speaker. "the more you try the *better you sound*" rather than "the more you try the *more you sound better*". The second formulation is completely understandable but it is not correct.

    i see many comments about how she sounds judgmental in the video, and how it’s a small difference and shouldn’t matter that much. well, first off in korea (as well as many other countries), the pronunciation has to be exact (or very close to exact) for locals to understand you the first time. if it’s incorrect even if you think it’s a “small difference” locals will be unimpressed. it’s also easy to misunderstand. it’s the same logic as you have to be precise with your pronunciation of chinese, as MANY phrases have the same pinyin spelling but different tones and slightly different punctuation. in english speaking countries, someone could talk with a foreign accent and their english wouldn’t be absolutely perfect, but it would be easy to understand most of the time, unless their accent was really thick and you’re not as good at interpreting accents. for an accent like hers, though, it’s pretty easy. however, this isn’t the case for korean as well as many other languages. so please don’t criticize her judgmental tone, she is simply trying to help you avoid these common mistakes that can have a negative effect on you in korea.

      Exactly, I've noticed that a lot of words have different meanings depending on how they use them and I've even seen a video (I think it was in an episode of Running Man) where a Korean told another Korean to vocalise his words better so they wouldn't misunderstand him.

    • @Pa-1
      @Pa-1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True, also sometimes the meaning of what we say may also change like ghaseyo and gheseyo differentiates between leaving and sending off someone. It is also in the spirit of enjoying the conversation with someone - when you are learning a language, take it from a native. Also pronunciation is a matter of practice so it helps if we vocalize what we are reading instead of simply reading in the mind.

    • @CytheriaXylia

      I highly agree with this comment omg! Finally someone who gives a proper, understandable and clear explanation. the "oi" sound is perfect, but try something like 쩬티 for "gente".
    i tried to "explain" the sound in hangul because i think you're more used to how our alphabet sounds in english than how it sounds in portuguese 💜

    • @efernando93
      @efernando93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      that's totally gonna be wrong if pronounced like that hahah
      Since they don't have that G sound in Korean and ㅌ is not pronounced (at all) the you think it is. The closer she could get using hangeul would be 젱치, and that would still be "wrong" because of the first sound, which again they don't have it there.
      PS.: 쩬티 would actually be closer to Tchenti, that 티 would actually be pronounced the same way as TA but with I, the same way children get confused when learning. Remember that in portuguese we change sound of some consonants when they're followed by I, in Korean that doesn't happen, unless it's ㅅ/ㅆ

      Eric Dutra i always thought that ㅉ was kinda like a very strong J sound in portuguese and that their ㅌ was a very aspirated consonant closer to the portuguese T sound and i know that they don't have some sounds like we don't have so of the korean sounds such as the ㄱ one, but i was only trying to get as close to it as possible with my poor hangul/korean skills haha

    • @efernando93
      @efernando93 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      meow meow don't worry, the intention is what matters the most hahah. ㅉ is actually a stronger j, but not the way you seem to have thought, there's basically close to no air coming out when speaking it. And ㅌ is in fact a very aspirated consonant, very similar to our t, but 티 is different of TI because in Portuguese we actually change the t sound.

      Euphoria yeah I totally get that, I think most people just want to understand commonly said things because subs get really annoying at some point, but also I’m trying to learn It not just for kpop and all, but mostly because my best friend is korean and most of her korean friends aren’t very good at English, so I’m trying for her and her friends obviously are also slowly learning English as well. I by no means need to be fluent as long as I can hold a simple conversation and read Hangul it’s all good haha

      @@americxno Both of those are fair reasons, mines actually common to yours. It's a complicated situation, but my half-sisters Korean and she can't speak English at all, she also lives in South Korea, so when I go visit her I'd love to be able to talk to her, but to also be able to talk to everybody else. I've gotta learn as much as possible in the span of six months.

      Oh wow that’s hard but apparently if you study korean one hour or so a day and also try to speak to yourself in korean and practice and whatnot, you should be able to start holding decent conversations in five-ish months. You can do it!!

    Initially wanted to learn because I wanted to be able to watch Kdramas without subtitles but also because 한글 (hangul) and the language itself looked/sounded beautiful but what finally got me to start learning it was learning that teaching English in Korea was a thing and it sounded like such an amazing experience. Learning Korean isn't required but it seems stupid to not learn the language of a place you are wanting to teach in so I've started learning 한글 and will be signing up for a proper lang class tomorrow!

    I don't feel like the romanization is the problem. I feel like the sounds letters make in English are the problem. In serbo-croatian we have the letter 'lj' (yes this is one single letter). For example the word 'bolje', which means better. I was born and raised in a Dutch speaking country. Whenever a Dutch person who doesn't have a slavic background tries to pronounce it, it always sounds like bol-i-je instead of bolje and they don't even notice it themselves. Like in the word annyeonghaseyo, I don't have any trouble pronouncing the nyeong part like it is instead of niijeoong. Because I'm used to the lj, nj đ("dgj") sounds. Though foreigners who speak germanic languages just aren't since their vocal chords aren't used to it and are already formed by the age of 15. Basically unless you have a lot of talent, it's basically impossible to pronounce the exact sounds.

      @justanotherfangirl6360 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MsSugarhart Well I am from Germany and don't have any problems either^^ I say the word just as she did everytime. Maybe I am genius according to you or I am just used to the sound since I binge watch kdramas alk the time^^
      All what matters is your practice and your will to do it correct.
