SoT is approaching the same fate as the TF2 bot situation. Unfortunately, although SoT has active developers, unlike TF2, SoT has much smaller PvP interactions, so recording and reporting cheaters takes much longer to process. Even if Rare's Anti-cheat team/mods were efficient, this problem ultimately starts from the anti-cheat measures that are clearly not working. Even if SoT had a successful campaign like SaveTF2 (the results are tentative if it even worked) I doubt we'd see much progress or change. This is like any war and it needs to constantly be updated. And once it's updated, the cheats are updated and so on.
@@AsaelusTF2 was on my mind a bit during these interactions, but having never played it, I couldn’t comment on it (although I’ve listened to a podcast that exclusively addressed the problem). Agreed though, developers will constantly be on the backfoot if they’re not proactive, and that’s not always a bad thing, so long as they’re being consistent and stopping this from occurring, or curbing it. Do I expect 100% no cheaters? No. Do I expect to at least play the game and not be inconvenienced every session? yes. They (Rare) has to address it soon!

Last time I played, I saw a ship on the horizon, then got yellowbearded, then the game uninstalled itself. I get where you're coming from but the more people use cheats for any purpose, even a good one, it means the cheat/hacking devs will keep coding and looking for exploits. It simply has to be "unprofitable" in terms of time and effort for these devs to bother, that's down to Rare to patch these exploits.
I started the game a year and a half late, still have thousands of hours in. Loved it, was one of my favorite games of all times in my nearly 40 years of gaming. Made a lot of friends in my many hours on the sea. The removal of the Arena was the beginning of the end because it is where most cheaters congregated originally, and if not just cheaters, exploiters. Then moving from Tall Tale content to Scenario content was a horrible decision. The story has been lacking for a while now. The integration of new mostly ranged weaponry and just poorly balanced adjustments to the ships, etc etc. The list is ever growing. The cheating is the worst problem in the game and there are so many that cheat, quite a few streamers as well. NAL was flooded with it. The lack of anti-cheat and real punishment from the side of Rare in reported content is just sickening. I used to look forward to hopping on even if my duo/friends/crew were not available and just seeing what adventure the sea offered at any given time.. now I barely get on when really good friends want to hop on and play. The removal of arena and the implementation of the new pvp focused content isn't well done. The diving system is horrible. It shouldn't exist. Actually sailing to and from was an integral part of the game and should've never incorporated diving as a version of travel. The hit registry, the higher ping on most servers in comparison to what they used to be, the consistently poor decisions in game change that affects playability for every encounter not just few exceptions and the cheating problem has killed a huge portion of the community and my personal love for the game. Very few of my friends still play at all, and what do, play very, very little in comparison and would happily play if the game didn't have the problems it has now that it didn't have before. I hate to see it and good on you for trying to get the word out more. So many people live in the dark or don't truly understand the amount of rampant cheating that is going on, or what is happening to them, especially a lot of the newer playerbase.
I been having these cheaters/hackers telling me that I need to remove myself from the genepool. And they even caused a few 9-year-old's permanently leave the game bawling their eyes out. They screamed at the kids and cursed at them horribly, and kept on killing them and sinking their ships even upon respawn. Instantly teleporting to their location, freezing them in place, and killing them, over and over and over again, while screaming and being horrible to the kids. And even going as far as screaming at them to remove themselves from the gene pool. They even disabled my mic, so I couldn't try to comfort the kids.
That's what happens when you try contort your community into something else the only ones to blame are the devs, I got temp banned for saying the f word like fkin is vocabulary in Scotland lol

I feel lucky I never encountered a cheater here in South America servers, but my guild mates have clips of them encountering cheaters in hourglass battles. I fear that it is only a matter if time until I find one. I also had one encounter where a couple of guys said things to me that felt like sexual harassment a few seasons ago. And I don't want that to keep happening. I guess it's time for me to move on to Safer Seas.
And that sucks because you shouldn't have to move to Safer Seas. You've done the right thing, obeyed the ToS, and yet feel the need to distance yourself from experiencing the full version of the game without limitations. It sucks, it really sucks.
Honestly console servers are my saving grace. while it may not be insanely kind people i haven’t heard anyone tell me to kill my self for a month. And a added benefit it would be extremely hard to cheat on these servers
Rare will only bother once it starts to affect their bottom-line, until then so long as the new players keep buying in, paying for the seasons and the goodies, Rare don't care. It's so sad to see SoT going the way of so many games, slowly being flushed chasing the money.
After haveing 2 different solos that where able to board me while their ship was still shooting us. Put 9 shots below water and the ship was instantly repaired. I gave up on this game
eerily similar to some situations in the bf community such as creator AsheBF (now AsheWRLD) and many others were targeted and harassed for literal months by cheaters and stream snipers. Not to mention bfv released with no anti cheat, similar to sot, and just now got one this year so i feel you. Shit is rough not just on sot.
I have not played for about a year, but I returned last night and met a cheater within a few hours. Because I laughed that someone would cheat on a game like sea of theives and point out how sad that is he god mad. Long story short, he teleported on our ship with a keg, didn't manage to kill us, but took out our mast ect. We repaired, by which point the guy had come back with his ship and just nailed our mast and wheel from miles away. This went on for about an hour before we just left and uninstalled the game. EAC is trash.
I have been playing for a lot of hours in the last week, and have seen 0 cheaters, not that I don't believe its an issue, I just cant believe i'm that lucky
There’s been cheaters in every lobby for years, but they only get noticed when they can teleport onto your ship, which makes the modder problem much more obvious, that gets patched every so often so people think hackers are gone, but the esp/auto-aim mod menus still always work. Rare needs to patch ALL hacks or just remove the percentage cut from safer seas so that you can play in a private server without being penalized.
Would any (new or experienced) players be interested in safer seas if it was 100% rep and gold without level caps or restrictions? I personally would for certain achievements, peace of mind, trying dead content, gold farming, etc.

I quit the game during season 9 because I was encountering at least 1 cheater per session, completely ruining the fun, and we're now in season 13. If we assume that part of the playerbase has been negatively affected by cheaters like I have, to the point of quitting, and if we assume that the pool of cheaters has been growing (either because bad actors who didn't previously know that the cheats exist now do, or because victims of cheaters decide they're tired of being bullied and take matters into their own hands), and then stretch that problem across 4 seasons - the premise of at least 1 cheater per server isn't outside the realm of possibility. SoT is become a superhero plot 🤣 Superhumans fighting superhumans to protect humans or destroy humans.
No. Do I expect to at least play the game and not be inconvenienced every session? yes.

Last time I played, I saw a ship on the horizon, then got yellowbearded, then the game uninstalled itself. Idk if it was an easy anticheat exploit or what, but everything else on the drive was still there, only the SoT folder was gone. At this point, every game I have played that uses easy anticheat has more cheaters than games with no anticheat measures. Makes the days of everything-gamespy look like a dream.
Quite a few pointing out the cheaters strange social skills. It’s because these kind of people are the ones that are usually bullies but too weak to bully people irl and are probably bullied themselves irl for being freaks. Never let these kind of people get hold of pew pews

My first Athena/Reaper hourglass dive with friends was Chinese speaking cheaters who spawned on our ship with a keg while we were still coming out of the dive. And of course when we requed, it was them again. Killed what little love I was going to attempt to give the game again.
11:16 is a pak file visually the person sniping cant see the megalodon but the person on the fort can because he is the only one with the pak file installed this works on only client side and no one else in the game can see the megalodon
I’m rooting for the anti cheaters because they aren’t using there cheats too ruin peoples days there using them to make peoples day. Yes it’s still not okay too use cheats AT ALL, but it’s nice to know there’s people that actually want to use cheats to help fight against other cheaters.
But they are cheaters too
I get where you're coming from but the more people use cheats for any purpose, even a good one, it means the cheat/hacking devs will keep coding and looking for exploits. It simply has to be "unprofitable" in terms of time and effort for these devs to bother, that's down to Rare to patch these exploits.

@@JonathanKing9608 thanks legend!

I don't necessarily think it's hyperbole to say that there's at least 1 cheater on every server.

Anti cheating cheaters are an odd issue to fix on the one hand they wouldnt exist if the game had no cheaters but the cheats let them pick out and kill other cheaters i think its not a stretch to say most people cheat because they are bad at the game so a skilled cheater against a bad one will hopefully kill the cheaters “fun” on the other hand i think its sadly more likely rare would ban these guys because the cheaters probably report them too or try to yellow beard and all that stuff so its ironic that the best defence against cheaters is anti cheaters
