  • This adorable baby African genet orphan has been raised by our cat from infancy, alongside her kittens, and now they are all just about old enough to start grappling and chasing each other around. Watch as the baby genet rears up on his hind legs to pounce, having watched the kittens doing so.

    do genets smell like ferrets?
Is there anywhere were I can look up info about owning one before I buy?
I'd like to know if they always have to be caged, or if they smell, of if they can be let out unsupervised (like a cat) .. or if they can be neutered by a regular vet, Or if I need to find an exotic vet. Or if there are temperamental differences been a male and female. Or if there is any difference between a small spotted genet and a large spotted genet,

The genet that I raised remained very shy and didn't like being handled much. Let him go since I live near some forest. Hardly any smell at all but those claws were as sharp as surgical blades. All in all my experience was that a gennet was not a good house pet, since it remains wild despite lots of handling.

@@riverbankfisher Ive heard that if you adopt a genet, that you have to keep them away from other pets at first so that they only attach to you, since they can only attach to one, and that it should preferably be its owner and not another animal.
And that there is no such thing as "Rehoming " a genet, because when they lose their 1 attachment, they frequently revert back to becoming completely feral. That's quite sad.
But I think that I would still like to own one. Even though theyre shy. They still seem friendly and sweet (with their owners) and are good with cats. Thanks for your reply.

How can I learn more about owning and caring for a ganet? How legal is it in the state of NY?

Hello Tony, While there are quire a few TH-cam videos of people raising gennets in the USA, I am not sure what the laws in New York are, regarding gennets has house pets. Even if the laws permit keeping gennets, they tend to revert back to being jumpy, timid and wild, if they are not handled enough.
This gennet in my video is doing well among the litter of kittens so far, but I notice he stays hidden most of the day. Finally got him eating shredded chicken today, to help wean him off the mother cat who fed him from the start when he came in as one of two orphans.
