Fantastic. One of my favourite bands. Never really got the credit that they deserved people used to call them "The poor man's moody blues" their answer to there critics was to realese a track called " Poor Man's Moody Blues" their song "Hymn"was one of my wife's all time favourites a beautiful song and well worth a listen.

Barclay James Harvest represent the very best of classic British rock. They also have the audience record in Europe. In east Germany Berlin. One of them had German background and wrote a song
"Berlin" from another wiev. Is a lovely Piece

So many brilliant songs on their album from 1974-ish: EVERYONE IS EVERYBODY ELSE. You guys will be blown away as I was in '74. (I saw them in Newcastle (UK) in '76.) Listening to the sound of "For No-one" drifting in and out over the airwaves from the weak transmitter on the Radio Caroline boat (the sound barely reached Teesside, and even then only once every couple of minutes) was sublime!

Wow Barclay James Harvest! I used to listen to BJH in college in the 70s. My roommate discovered them somewhere. I haven't thought about them in years. Used to listen to them often, but not this song. I don't even remember what songs were on the album we listened to, but I believe the album was called Gone To Earth. Had a cool cover, with like an owl. They have a very cool prog rock sound, I like their use of orchestration. Thank you guys for reminding me of Barclay James Harvest!

As an aging Brit BJH were one of the many bands I saw live. This track you've picked includes an orchestra. My 2 boys even enjoy their album 'Everyone Is Everybody Else'. Very much underrated band. They were very much into music about people, their lives etc. 'Concert for the People' a live album from a gig in Berlin.

After signing with EMI's Parlophone label in the UK for one single in early 1968, they moved to the more progressively inclined Harvest label. The name for the band, according to The International Barclay James Harvest Fan Club, signifies nothing specifically. Having exhausted other possibilities, each of the band members wrote single words on pieces of paper which were drawn out of a hat one by one. All were rejected until only three were left: James, a man who used to sing with the band, Harvest because they were living in a farmhouse, and Barclay after Barclays bank, because they aspired to make money. These were then rearranged to get the best-sounding name - "Barclay James Harvest".[2]

Great that you began listening to them, Barclay James Harvest are sadly to much underrated, however very popular in Germany. They are sometimes considered as soft rock with a symphonic edge (less Progressive) but still close to Pink Floyd or Alan Parsons (because of adding the orchestra in the songs) in some atmospheres but finally with a unique sound of their own. They committed a very large discography from late sixties until after 2000 with more than 20 albums. Discovered that song with much less orchestra in their live in Berlin in 1980, and albums like "Eyes of the Universe" Turn of the tide" at the edge of the 80' more keyboards instead, and I liked that version more, sounded more like a band with less ambitious effects. I believe it was the Keyboarder Wolly Wolstenholme who sang the song, but typically in BJH you heard more of the other voices from John Lees the guitar player, and also Les Holroyd the bass player co-composer, but in the middle they sing together. There is another album version in 1974, I believe with a more interesting sound reflecting the band even better at early stage. My favorite version remains the 1980 live mega concert in Berlin.

I can't recall hearing anything by them, but if I did, this particular song wasn't one of them. However, I was very familiar with their name. There was so many interesting bands at that time that it was easy to overlook something special. As others have mentioned, they do have a similarity to the Moody Blues. This type of singing shouldn't be surprising because England has had such a long legacy of choral music tradition. In fact, when I visited Canterbury and it's cathedral, I was lucky to experience a nightly choral session up very close which was both thrilling and beautiful for a music lover like me. What I shouldn't neglect to mention too, Canterbury is famous for giving birth to many well known prog bands such as Caravan, Camel and Soft Machine to name just a few of them.

This song was arranged and orchestrated by Robert John Godfrey from symphonic prog band The Enid. I worked for RJG and The Enid for five years until 2013. There was a lot of bad feeling, which carries on until today as RJG was never credited and didn't receive royalties, so he took BJH to court and won the right to call this his work, but not to royalties and still is not credited. The Enid produced a their own video of Mockingbird in about 2011, which is available on TH-cam, filmed overnight in a very cold warehouse!

  • @rudolfbecker4313
    @rudolfbecker4313 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think, Mockingbird was their most famous song of the first phase, the success came in Germany with the album Gone to Earth #10 in the charts in 1977. Hymn was a "hit", which everybody liked, especially the girls. At parties in our basement party room, they wanted us to play it all the time. But the "Baker boys" were in control of the stereo and our "law" was, each song only once per night ... in those days there was no trying to corrupt us with whatsoever ... 🤣🤣🤣 After that they became more commercial and they had 6 Top 10 albums in Germany and 1 #1 album in Switzerland 🤘 I like the older BJH better. Saw them once open air in 1979 at beautiful Loreley Amphitheatre.... pretty good, but that night we were all enchanted by Dire Straits, who had played right before BJH.
The popularity of the band probably increased also because of a free concert in Aug.1980 on the Platz der Republik in West-Berlin (back in the days, when there were 2 Germanys) in front of a crowd of 175.000 people, estimated. Then they released the concert on LP named Berlin - concert for the people. The LP starts with the song Berlin, which wasn't actually the concert opener 😆 What would be interesting to know is, how many more people listened "behind the Berlin wall" 😮🤘

As you've now entered into the world of BJH you should delve into the world of 'The Enid'. The founder of The Enid is Robert John Godfrey who was the musical director of BJH when they first formed and was instrumental (no pun intended) in developing their sound, style and direction, notably creating the orchestral arrangement for the Mocking Bird track. His acrimonious split from BJH is for another day (too lengthy to discuss here). It will take you many months to make sense of the Enids catalogue but trust me, whilst challenging there are some gems along the way. May be worth listening to their version of Mocking bird. They recently had as their vocalist Joe Payne (who has since left - went a bit too West End Musical for my liking) whose vocal ability though is up their with the very best and I include Jeff Buckley, Freddie Mercury. Has won best progrock vocalist here in the UK in recent years. To demonstrate this listen to 'One of the many' song. (studio or live version, equally stunning, slow build up, climatic song) his voice octave switch in it is incredible. As I said the Enid whilst challenging is one of the biggest rabbit holes in music but trust me you'll both be richer for it.

Hi Greybeard, don't "we collectors" all have those treasures ? 🤣 I have my CDs all in front of me in my music room, but the LPs are in the basement and only once in a while I remember one or the other and bring it upstairs to listen to; this way I really forgot about some rare ones. But since my son moved out, I can arrange music room #2 upstairs with my LPs ... only have to buy a new turntable ... Sounds like a good plan for the next dark and cold season, which I can light up with some real old music ... Since my older brother basicly had everything from Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Genesis etc. my buying carrier started at the age of 14 : first LP Slade - Sladest ... followed by UFO , my first own Led Zepplin (I think my brother's was a used one 🤔), Free, Mountain, Eloy ... money was really short being a student with 2 brothers and parents, who just had built a house. But other than that I had such a lucky childhood and youth, being outside all the time, playing in the vineyards and woods of my hometown, where I lived until 12. Everyday soccer, sometimes doing the Seilspringen and Gummi-twist with the girls, when they needed a third or fourth person🤣one summer we even build a dam in the local creek, about 6 to 7 meters wide, then build a raft ... pretty soon some adults showed up, telling us to tear it down.... later on in the early teens we suddenly discovered that girls are not only stupid, strange beeings 🤣🤣🤣 being raised catholic, everything was so innoncent ... so I've never been seduced by a kindermädchen, as I've heard from some amercan friends 🤔😆

I always liked BJH ... but then that was 45+ years ago! My main memory of the band was their live album 'Barclay James Harvest Line (1974)' which features what, for me, was the definitive version of 'Mockingbird'

They have three lead vocalists in the band. Sometimes they create nice vocal harmonies which is one of the bands trademark.

I mostly listen to the first five studio albums by them. They are amazing. They stopped using full orchestras after their third album from 1972 "Baby James Harvest". Lately, I have been missing the opportunities to request more songs. 1970 - 1975 was their most creative Era of them.

BJH stands alway in the second or third row of the seventies prog bands - but don't they deserve to get a little upgrade? Btw, Robert John Godfrey did the orchestral things here, he was later known as a founding member of The Enid!

best lp they did is everyone is everybody else-they were always a good band but that album was definitely a step up for them and is brilliant -besr track is for no one, a bit of a peace anthem with dave gilmour like guitar

Seen this band many times in England and they are far better live than on record. John Lee's snarling lead guitar work is truly amazing on record they sound a bit thin and lacking punch still very good though.

Great band who lasted for a good 20 plus years before dual singer/songwriter fall out a la Supertramp. John Lees and Les Holroyd both still tour with their own versions of the band.........guess egos just clash in this high octane business!

Sounds like may have influenced Alan Parsons Project.. Another great band from that time period is Nektar... who have great tunes like "A Tab In the Ocean", "Desolation Valley", "Do You Believe In Magic Now", "Magic Is a Child", "King of Twilight ", and "It's All In the Mind", plus some extensive concept pieces. Deserves a Marathon consideration, for sure.. thanks.

Seen BJH many times, they did change somewhat in the 1980s after the keyboardist left, they became less Symphonic and more AOR but that was the way music was going, to be fair they had more success in the later years especially in Germany and Switzerland....I prefer the 70's output myself even though there were some great moments in the 1980s and 90s...

BJH was quite a unique band in that they had three very distinct songwriters in the band, all of them also lead singers. John Lees the guitarplayer wrote most of the more rocking songs, bassplayer Les Holroyd eventually the more poppy tunes and keyboardplayer Woolly Wolstenholme had a more symphonic approach. However, on their first few albums that hadn’t solidified yet and that also made those albums (released on the famous Harvest label) at times a bit uneven. Unifying element on those was the use of orchestra and at that time the band even toured with their own BJH Orchestra (mind you, the further away from London the smaller the orchestra was) but that would turn out to be a huge financial burden. The band sought a better record deal (while at the same time stopping to use the orchestra live) and eventually Polydor had to buy them out from Harvest. What followed was musically their best period with some of their best albums like Time Honoured Ghosts and Octoberon. After the XII album keyboard player Woolly would leave and BJH lost their symphonic sound but became even more succesfull in Europe especially in Germany. In that period the songwriting was strictly divided between Lees and Holroyd and it seemed that while Woolly was still there BJH was a band but after he left it literally became a group of two halves. In later years it even became the case that both writers hardly ever played on each other’s songs (both of them played guitar, bass and keyboards). So it isn’t surprising to hear that eventually the band literally split up in two: John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest and Barclay James Harvest feat. Les Holroyd. Of those two the Holroyd one has become pretty much non-existent while John Lees is still regularly playing live. Up until is sudden passing Woolly even was part of John’s band and it was the Lees version that played most of their classic 70s prog material and they still do to this day.

Yeah, they're a band, not an individual. I followed them in the early 70s. Saw them live once, but was disappointed. Sometimes they toured with an orchestra, but that was pretty expensive. When I saw them, it was just the group and they tried to compensate by upping the volume to levels where it became uncomfortable.
They released Mocking Bird as a single, but it was too long to get much radio play, and didn't fly. They were better as an album band, and had a popular following. I've got a best of album of theirs, which has a really nice collection of tracks on.
Galadriel is a beautiful little song of theirs, as is Early Morning. Other tracks of theirs worth listening to include, Medicine Man, Child of Man, Mother Dear, and Poor Wages. A lot of their music has a sort of ethereal, far away quality, it's quite relaxing to listen to. When I bought my best of album, my wife wouldn't stop playing it.

The version from the Live 1974 album is far better imho. No fussy orchestration. The song doesn’t need blaring brass or tinkly percussion bits bolted on, just because they could 🤔
Btw…recording methods were far better than today, so remarks like “oh it’s a really good recording for 1971” is very condescending indeed. Producers and engineers back then were experts in sound. Nowadays there’s no depth with digital recording, and no sense of the room that the groups were playing in. 🤔

This is yet another shining example of the embarrassment of riches that was available in the early '70s. The "Poor Man's Moody Blues" also had peers in folks like Clannad, Fairport Convention, and early Fleetwood Mac. Bare Trees. Future Games. A more acoustic progressive folk renaissance. I figured it might be years before BJH got a reaction. Thanks for proving me wrong.
