- One year after a casket was found in a San Francisco backyard containing the perfectly preserved body of a little girl from the 1800s, researchers discovered her true identity. The Garden of Innocence, an organization that buries abandoned and unidentified children, says her name is Edith Howard Cook. She likely fell ill and stopped eating. Its lso called wasting disease. Her family clearly took good care of her and also had the wealth to bury her well. This is clearly not a case of neglect or poverty.

Her coffin was tightly sealed and embalming chemicals were found in the coffin, on her clothes, and in her body. She was preserved. The coffin was covered with decorative metal. Bacteria and molds would have been unable to survive the chemicals. Also, the glass windows on the coffin were for viewing, but would also have been quickly covered with metal plates after viewing making it air tight. After discovery of the coffin, forensics examiners opened the coffin, thus allowing the chemicals to dry out and dissipate, and allow bacteria to enter which in turn began rapid decomposition. A more recent photo show her body in a bad state of decay.

I actually help volunteer at the Garden Of Innocence, this group is so kind and very hard working! I am a coordinator for the group. I remember first hearing about her from my mom. We couldn't make it to the funeral due to travel but we were there for multiple others. She could have been undernourished from a sickness where she couldn't eat. That casket was very well thought out and made specifically for her. I highly doubt her parents let her starve. They didnt have feeding tubes back then so if you got sick ans couldn't eat you just died.
Of course they didn't. Back then alot of people died young. Near my house there is a small grave yard all very old. Alot were young children. Only a couple lived pasted 50.
How the hell do you just relocate an entire cemetery? Leave those bodies alone
Happens all the time. Whenever a new interstate comes thru, if a cemetery is in the way, they relocate the bodies.

Pauline Hayel very interesting. It was odd for families to try and "preserve" the deceased because of the process and cost of supplies. Especially because the child was malnourished they definitely didn't have the means to supply it.
Pauline Hayel Its an artist's version.Perfect weather conditions,Moist soil might have enabled a near perfect preservation. But The actual preservation may not be no where near perfect to the painting. Considering the child comes from a very poor backgroung(death due to undernourishment) an embalming wouldn't be possible.so I'd say weather played a key factor.

Such a sad case, but it is amazing how beautifully preserved she was. She looked ethereal still, this baby was clearly very much loved.
That's just a photoshopped version of the photo where an artist "reimagined" her.... She was mummified, open mouthed, blackened, mold covered with fungi growth, and part of her head was caved in.
Nobody wants to see a pictured that’s been “touched up” by an artist. Show us the real picture! That’d be more fascinating
