I know people sometimes point to this scene and say that Curly blew Anya off on purpose and pretended he noticed nothing. But I actually really like the delivery here. He's just genuinely being an oblivious dumbass, only for the reality to hit him later on after the worst has already happened. Also huge props to the VAs, they did a great job on this scene.
Thank you! Sad to see that some people cannot POSSIBLY fathom that Curly took the whole convo literally and at face value. Y'know... Like a normal human being? This was an unplanned, chance encounter. He has no prior context to Anya's dilemma. The conversation started out chill and friendly. Curly would have to be a mind reader, or a hyper-microanalyzer partial to tragic undertones to gleam that Anya is hinting at her SA. And why would he do that for a casual nighttime conversation? He's not picking up hints because he's not on the lookout for them. And there are also people calling him dismissive? For one once again, no context; so it isn't even intentional ignorance. And two, if we're still looking at the dead pixel literally (which Curly is) Curly took Anya seriously, gave it a solid good look, quit because he couldn't find it, but said he'd go nuts continuing to look for it, then signed it off playfully, because once again Curly thinks we're literally talking about a singular black 1x1 dot on a giant fucking screen with a "bigger picture" of a still functioning, beautiful night sky. Hey! Here's an experiment we can all do: the next casual conversation you have with someone, aggressively look for signs that might be a call for help. Now, some of you might be wondering, "Why would I do that? I don't know them like that." Congratulations, you are now in Curly's shoes. But that doesn't make you dense, or stupid, or a "dismissive, victim blaming, abuse enabler." You just don't know. (Apologies for turning your goodwilled comment into a rant space, I'm just not good at being concise)
you know what? i also think that the bedrooms are unlocked for safety reasons. those bedrooms are small with no windows since they're in space. anything happening in there would instantly become a fire hazard. plus, easy retrieval if anything happened to a crew member. the company is too stingy to comply with fire hazard regulations otherwise.
That's the whole point of the story, Curly didn't INTENTIONALLY let Jimmy fuck everything up, but his lack of action allowed him to do so. Way more terrifying than bad man let's other bad man do bad things and it backfires on the first bad man. Curly was just a man, and his simple mistake of inaction caused him, (and everyone) everything.

Safety for their supplies and equipment, but not their crew members. Pony express can be considered the 2nd antagonist of this game with the sheer lack of concern they have for their employees
I may be wrong, but from what I've been told, real cargo ships genuinely don't have locks on the crew sleeping quarters. Large, long-haul shipping vessels are constructed with the expectation of potential failures. In case of an emergency such as a hull breach or fire, the most likely places for the crew to be in need to remain unlocked. In general, it's far more likely that a fire could start while the crew are sleeping, and locked metal doors are more susceptible to becoming damaged shut in case of a fire than unlocked ones, for instance. What needed to have been accounted for that wasn't was the inherent risks associated with having a mixed-sex crew on an isolated ship that were expected to work together for over a year at a time. There should have been emergency contraceptives and a brig on a tulpar.
It's amazing how people reduce Curly as "100% innocent" or "100% evil" when the truth is that the character is simply realistic and well written. His main problem is how his empathy is directed towards all the characters including his friend, Jimmy. He was the captain, he wanted everyone to be in a good mood and satisfy both parties, and in his mind the best way to do that was to ignore the bad and avoid confrontation at all costs. Yes, he was a bad captain for trying to give Jimmy a second chance (we all want to believe that horrible people, and especially those close to us, can change) and for not properly handling the Anya situation. But does that make him a bad person? Honestly, in my opinion, no. He's not good and he's not bad, but that doesn't mean he's responsible for Jimmy's actions, every decision he made was with a positive intention, and that's what led to his downfall.
he was so good he ended up being bad. so obsessively trying to keep everything together he was actively ignoring the problem, knowing that adressing it would cause further distress, especially with his friend Jimmy, who I think he was partially in denial about what he did.
He’s kind but he’s kind to a fault. An incredibly dangerous fault in the end. He’s that one teacher who won’t step in and do something about the kid who’s bullying another student, because he’s aware the bully had had it hard too. So he feels bad stepping in and having them removed from the classroom or having some sort of action in place because he doesn’t want everyone to be hurt. Does that make him cruel or make him deserve to have anything bad happen to them? Of course not. Deep down you might even like that teacher because they’ve always just been really nice to you. But as nice as they are, god damn are they so useless in situations like this. That’s the kind of person Curly is
@@BlueSpams In my country there are two sayings, "Sinning out of innocence" and "Hell is paved with good intentions", The first means committing a moral infraction, despite being an innocent person, while the second means that good intentions are useless if they are not accompanied by actions, When I hear these two sayings, Curly immediately comes to mind and how he sin being innocent without knowing that hell was paved with good intentions. That's why he's not bad, but he's not good either.
@KeyboardTarantula Who wouldn't be? Let's put aside Jimmy's actions and think about Curly's place, how would you react to knowing that your friend, whom you have known for a long time, is accused of such actions? Honestly, I would act like Curly, I would find it hard to believe that my best friend was capable of doing such a thing, and I would try to get an explanation from him, This is where Jimmy took advantage, since knowing that Jimmy is very noble, he played the victim with him and asked him to take his side, making Curly think about that, Although I think that after he saw that Jimmy was willing to kill everyone to avoid taking the consequences of his actions, he would completely regret what he did, unfortunately, it was very late

He was a good man who didnt realize you need to establish boundaries, that without them you can be terribly unkind to everyone else and himself by being kind to the sort of person who doesnt deserve it, who would manipulate and use that kindness against them. Especially when said person crosses a line.
@@DeathnoteBBWell i'm sorry to say, bro, none of that takes away from the fact Curly was manipulated and abused by Jimmy, both pre and post-crash. He recommended Jimmy the job because, as the commenter above you noted, is a kind man. Who gives kindness even to those who don't deserve it. He genuinely believed Jimmy just needed a lil help to get back on his feet and get better. And as for him ignoring the signs, well I personally think its fair and realistic to not automatically assume the worst about someone you've been friends with for a long time and thought you could trust. He fucked up, that's undeniable. But I stand by that he, like the rest of the crew, is also a victim of Jimmy.
@starfarer8398 I'm not saying he deserved anything that happened to him, in fact, it was overkill. The way that man suffered was insane, but it doesn't mean that he wasn't really stupid beyond what was acceptable. Your crew mate accuses another of SA, fine maybe he wanted to get both sides and didn't know what to do (that I'll fix it garbage was very confusing tho) BUT for Jimmy to then detail how they should just crash, for him to go on that tirade about killing everyone on board and for Curly to JUST WALK AWAY??? 🤯 There's a reason why you can't joke about bringing a bomb on board at an airport. That kind of thing has consequences to big to treat as a joke. He should've at least held Jimmy somewhere after that crashing nonsense. Curly was more than a poor manipulated bystander, my guy was an enabler. He essentially saw the manifesto of a school shooter and allowed the students to still attend the next day without alerting the police.
I remember you talking in Discord about how you were worried about animating this scene, but dude, you had nothing to worry about! this turned out incredible!
"the bigger picture" -just how he prioritezed the completion of the misson/survival of the crew over the dead pixel (the assault). COOKING with that line
The way she cuts Curly off: “8 months”. She’s a nurse, she’s smart, she did the math, and the numbers crushed her soul. The voice acting is incredible.
“Maybe I’m just used to looking at the bigger picture” One of Curly’s biggest flaws is that he struggles to focus on the details, and the smaller problems with certain things.
There's such a genuine warmth when Anya says, "in the back of my mind, it's always there", and I just hngh- Like she really genuinely was only thinking of the dead pixel at that moment, and she's here with her friend Curly, talking about something inconsequential....until her tone changes, and she isn't.
“those who don’t help those suffering in life are doomed to bear witness to it in death having lost the ability to help” it’s from an osp video about christmas carol but I think about it alot in relation to curly
God, your animation is so good, and both Quills and Gianni fit the characters so well. This scene hurts to watch after understanding the subtext, but I really think you guys did it justice.
The dead pixel as a metaphor for Jimmy and the danger he poses is so good. Both with Curly not being able to see it, and Anya being the first to see it and saying how it's 'always in the back of her mind'. Absolutely amazing writing
At this rate you're gonna make a full blown animated adaptation of this thing, which I'm all here for! This game is one of the most realistic horror games I've seen in a while and has a great cast of well developed characters.
The true impact of this scene did not hit me until much later in the game and replaying it made everything about 100000% more intense. This game was phenomenal
When she asked about the pixel Curly looks for a FEW SECONDS and finds no effort whatsoever to find it. This is an example of how he sees Jizzzapointment. “Maybe I’m just used to looking at the bigger picture” Curly's body was also an example on how Jimmy saw her and treated her mentally.
Amazing job realising this scene. You did such a great job capturing this tender moment, this glimpse into a tiny shred of normalcy and humanity the crew might have had, that’s over all too soon. The dialogue in-game isn’t voiced. It’s up to the player to imagine how those lines are delivered; and I really love your interpretation.
The pixel is super important. Curly always looks at the bigger picture, meaning that he cares more for peace than anything. He didn’t complete his duty as a captain and didn’t care for his crew other than Jimmy. Which led him to die for Jimmy and remain the bad guy in other’s eyes as an attempt to keep the peace instead of simply taking action to give Jimmy the consequences he deserved. Anya, on the other hand, went through traumatic ordeals and watched out for every single mistake she made or little things she overthinked about. Which lead her to her death.
Oh my god, I was having literal goosebumps seeing this scene fully animated and voiced. Their movements, facial expressions, voices, all these little details really complete their personalities, almost as if I was watching not a game-inspired video, but an actual movie/tv show scene. @@cserialenI mean I get that but covering up jimmys name and what he did kind of defeats the point in highlighting how horrifying his actions were to anya. Like isn’t the point that this shouldn’t have been hidden so I wonder why the fan base sometimes does this past the bit of Jimmy being too deplorable.
@@nont18411yep. He was likely clinically depressed aswell which made him numb to a lot of shit. Having a toxic manipulative excuse of a shitstain of humanity known as Jimmy drag that connection to life down probably made him more numb
If you remember he briefly considers jimmys plan of ending it since he didn’t really see a point himself.
But ultimately his inaction caused the hell after and ended up like you said causing his goals of being a good captain befall to a bad captain that unintentionally created this banality of evil
@@cserialenHIS name is just an insult for mouthwashing community at this point, like if you have an argument with a die hard mouthwashing fans, just insulting and comparing them to HIS name, you would instantly win an argument against them lmao
1:13 this scene always breaks my heart, because curly took the question as; “why did they put locks on the medical room?” And not as “why didn’t they put locks in the sleeping quarters?” as she intended the question to be.
I WAS GONNA SAY THIS
So glad someone picked up on this. Sad to see people forget the SA
Or, as some note, he was thinking it more in the general terms. IE "They don't put locks in the sleeping quarters in the event someone needs help, or so someone doesn't accidently lock themselves out."
My heart… this scene just sucks the life out of me every time. It says so much with so little.
I’m a survivor of SA. I’m not shy about it. Anya’s story hit me very hard, as you can imagine.
Quills does an amazing job bringing this scene to life. Thank you.
You are very strong. I'm very happy for you :)
As someone who was nearly SAed, I really relate to Anya’s story as well. The feeling of being taken advantage of by someone you trusted is just the worst feeling imaginable. So, stay strong. I hope you live a long and happy life.
@@skiiesstarrii To you, too. You’re stronger than you know. You are loved.
Me too!!! I have PTSD from the matter and well this game, my girlfriend, fma, and undertale are all helping me through it.
@@mo0nflowersart Well, I hope that you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way. Remember that you’re loved and I hope you will have a wonderful life. 🫶
You ever notice how Jimmy gets into both the sleeping quarters and the cockpit and both end in disaster, so when Anya dies she chooses the one "safe" area he's yet to breach
what happened in the cockpit?
@rishadahmed3969 Jimmy crashing the ship and getting Curly fried 😔
she was holding her stomach.. 0:55
no way really?
No shit

@@jawnsonbmostly that she is pregnant… meaning that at one point she would have gave birth in the Pony express..
@jawnsonb maybe
how dare TH-cam hide this from me for 1 second
I can't believe I had to refresh my homepage for this to be recommended.
But that doesn't make you dense, or stupid, or a "dismissive, victim blaming, abuse enabler."
You just don't know.
@@charlierei9292 Especially as he tried to see the best in someone he considered a friend

@@holliday4515 Plus, even if he wanted to do something, well, what could he do? They're in the middle of space, likely without any inhabited planets or stations nearby. Seemingly only two, technically three if you want the cargo area, are lockable

THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I IMAGINED THIS SCENE !! you are carrying this fandom man, we love you , THANK YOU!! i love the small details in the expressions and movements, such as anya trying to hide her worry or sadness with a forced smile, and her holding her stomach. damn
JUSTICE FOR ANYA.
The body language is so good here. The way Anya catches her stomach and how Curly just stretch his hair. This is so good oh my goosh
Nice to see you here
Curly makes me so sad because he takes responsibility in the end in the most cosmic and uncontrollable way. He can't save anyone, and he can't do anything to help them. He just has to watch and know, which is what caused this to happen.
He ignored the dead pixel, until it covered the whole screen.
GIANNI AS CURLY?! 0_0 love it already lol
I would seriously love a "remaster" of this game with the cutscenes done like this. They're so good. I love to see it.
When Curly laugh it's probably in that moment he finally saw that dead pixel but it was too late
Great writing there's a black pixel, a fault, Curly cant see it and Anya cant unsee it. I wonder if the black pixel represents an ongoing issue on the ship
A certain Scheiße...
The dead pixel is meant to represent Jingleballs and the danger he poses
Mrbeast is the dead pixel
I love Curly. That poor, abused man. Too lost in the shit Jimmy gave him, yet still determined too see the best in everyone. Many people wish to place so much blame on Curly, but he is a victim of Jimmy like Anya. Oh captain, my captain... Everyone deserved so much more.
He was a good man who didnt realize you need to establish boundaries, that without them you can be terribly unkind to everyone else and himself by being kind to the sort of person who doesnt deserve it, who would manipulate and use that kindness against them. Especially when said person crosses a line.
“Poor, abuser man”? Bro he chose to bring Jimmy on the ship and chose to ignore every red flag
There's a reason why you can't joke about bringing a bomb on board at an airport.
The subtle notes like zooming in on her stomach when she asks how long the journey has left...

The dead pixel as a metaphor for Jimmy and the danger he poses is so good. Both with Curly not being able to see it, and Anya being the first to see it and saying how it's 'always in the back of her mind'. Absolutely amazing writing
This just shows how realistic the dialogue is in this game it's so good
At this rate you're gonna make a full blown animated adaptation of this thing, which I'm all here for! This game is one of the most realistic horror games I've seen in a while and has a great cast of well developed characters.

@VoiceQuills BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH MORE ANYA WOOOOOOOO
Watching now,I understand the '8 months left'
Poor Anya
This is incredible, good god
The way she cuts him off with "eight months", Jesus
The pixel is super important. Curly always looks at the bigger picture, meaning that he cares more for peace than anything. He didn’t complete his duty as a captain and didn’t care for his crew other than Jimmy. Which led him to die for Jimmy and remain the bad guy in other’s eyes as an attempt to keep the peace instead of simply taking action to give Jimmy the consequences he deserved. Anya, on the other hand, went through traumatic ordeals and watched out for every single mistake she made or little things she overthinked about. Which lead her to her death.
I love how Joetastic is carrying the fandom🙏
Love how you portrayed this scene, and the voice actors did amazing and fit the characters so well💙😭
When she held her stomach OH MY GOD. Im gonna actually bteak down sobbing. Jotastic, why would you do ts to me.
Oh my god, I was having literal goosebumps seeing this scene fully animated and voiced. Their movements, facial expressions, voices, all these little details really complete their personalities, almost as if I was watching not a game-inspired video, but an actual movie/tv show scene.
