Danielle Freeman you are right, but some parents like Nagisa’s mother are like that because of the regrets in life they made, or because of the problems they had with their own parents. Hiromi, Nagisa’s mother, is a broken (albeit demented) bird because of the regrets in that we made in her life. Her parents made her study for tests, and forbade her from wearing girly clothes. They even made her keep her short (probably wanted her to be a boy, but that’s just my theory). And not only that, but she was unable to get into the university she wanted to go to. She decided to have a daughter who she could use to obtain those dreams for her. Even though she ended up getting a son, our beloved Nagisa, that didn’t stop her from living vicariously through him.
Seriously, mental and emotional abuse is just as serious as physical abuse. It might not give you bruises, but it can absolutely tear a person down to nothing, shape and mold them to be whatever the abuser wants. Plus it's harder to detect and prove for obvious reasons.
I mean, at least Endeavor knows he's easy to hate. Whenever someone speaks against Nagisa's mum, she tries to guilt trip them as if she's the best thing that's ever happened to them, and that it's rude for them to disagree with her. Endeavor just skips all that bull with a "I don't care one bit if you hate me, because that's not important. What's important is that you grow stronger." The experience snapped her to reality and so she started attempting to act better. The fact that Nagisa's mom could find the real Karasuma after meeting Koro sensei like this kind of shows how his cosplay was pretty close to the real one.
The fact that Nagisa's mom actually changes at the end of this little arc is unquestionably a toxic implication thrown around in Japanese society. In America and most western countries if you get caught doing the shit she does to her child, the child goes to social services and outside of the abuse, at least in the cases where people can actually save the children after social diagnosis. You can't change damaged adults in a way that will help the kids in time at this sort of level. Most people don't have perfect parents, but Japanese society is extremely willing to push down the abuse out of sight because of their lack of willingness to support the abused, out of petty "fear" of reprisal that likely doesn't exist. And they wonder why birth-rates have gone down. People abused as kids don't usually marry. And the bullying that actually goes on in Japanese schools is absolutely reprehensible. All because the bad seeds can get away with it easily it gets worse, because the incidents are always pushed down. In the west we have the same problems, but people actually stand up and defend each other and are less afraid to do so. Because of tramua. She is trapped in broken dreams and a terrible upbringing. That doesn't mean what she is doing is right, but that's what causes much of her behavior.
I know right they are all like: hey guys let’s eavesdrop ooh I think it’s getting interesting the an Anger wave pops up the students are all like Oh my god she is one Angry Lady Me: Aw man the reaction is hilarious
Well she had trauma and her parents never let her so maybe they killed her roots or something that kills the growth of hair again this is an anime if there’s nothing like that it’s fictional
As someone who has a mom like this it's tough and anger provoking to see. People who are like this don't listen to reason unless it benefits them and are extremely controlling and manipulative. It made me really upset that Nagisa was like "I understand your stress mom so I'm gonna help out around the house!" It's a horrible way to explain Nagisas mom because it doesn't matter what Nagisa does, his mom is always going to find ways to be upset with him and she is gonna find new ways to manipulate him. At least that is my experience, so it's frustrating to see such an awful character be essentially forgiven without actually learning a lesson.
Almost being killed by an assassin and rescued by her own son forced her back to reality... scary as she is, she was too caught up in petty things to realize Nagisa could be more successful without her influence then he was when she constantly forced her complexes on him and expected to be with him (in some form or other) until the end of HER days. I don't think her fainting was just the adrenaline wearing off: she's in shock that she smothered him when she should've savored him for who HE was, and since he's assassin skills prove he can handle himself, she now realizes he might leave the nest sooner then planned.
Agreed and I relate, I think she got forgiven way too easily but also I understand where he is coming from since I try my best not to provoke my parents by going with what they want :[
I remember watching those scenes in middle school and my mouth was dropped open and my mind was in an endless "WTF is wrong with this lady?!" loop. Rewatching it in high school, with a much better knowledge on people, makes me glad of these characters being shown bc it gives watchers an idea, whether big or small, about how these people tick and what the warning signs are.
2:48 I know the subtitle at the top is just for the sign at the back, but "Out of Order" makes alot of sense here. Nagisa's mother clearly is taking charge here against her own son's will, which isn't something a parent should ever do. In order words she's failing as a mother, hence being out of order.
I hate how in the end his dad got back with this abusive psycho! Seriously, she mentally, emotionally and psysically abuses her SON, get's called out by a teacher once or maybe a few others but in the end suffers NO real consequences and is in fact REWARDED for her behavior!

I'm willing to bet Nagisa wasn't the only one being abused and given that without clear signs of abuse most kids are primarily left to mothers in the vast majority of cases around the world fighting for Nagisa could do more harm then good. Children can often become tools for abusers to hurt their spouse if the kid is not seen to be on the abusers side. If the Dad saw no sign of physical endangerment and no evidence to show abuse in court then leaving Nagisa with her and not fighting for custody is arguably safer for him. Maybe if he was older and could be trusted by a court to choose who to live with but that differs between countries.
I like how koro sensei immediately tied Nagisa’s hair up for him. It was like a physical way of showing that he was in every way helping Nagisa be true to himself
Honestly depends on the situation. While in countries like China, a son is preferable for economic reasons, in western societies it varies. A demented enough parent would honestly do either. Heck, crazy people aren't a cultural constant anyway, so I wouldn't put it past anyone.
If I'm not wrong she wants a daughter as a projection of her shattered dreams when she was young. It was revealed that she lost her dreams bcs she's a female and they restricted her so much bcs of her gender. By having a daughter and trying to make her daughter 'perfect', she wants to prove to people that women can do as good or even better than men. And her obsession becomes even more maladaptive when she didn't even get a daughter but a son instead
Ken nn Obviously, as a young girl, Hiromi parents forced her to prioritize studying and she was never able to dress herself up. She always dreamed of attending one of the countries top universites, and getting a job at a very prestigious company, but failed to achieve either of these goals. This lack of fulfillment, as well as her controlled childhood, caused Hiromi to wish for a daughter, so that she could live the life she had wanted through her. However, she had a son, Nagisa, instead. Despite having a boy, Hiromi still tried to live the life she wanted through him. Her methods included keeping Nagisa's hair long and occasionally forcing him to crossdress. According to Nagisa, it was Hiromi's controlling and semi-psychotic temper that drove his father away. So she’s not suitable to be a parent, but it depends on the situation, all I know is someone call child protection services on her..
Yeah like said earlier it really depends. Although historically it used to be the opposite, now we see more cases like Nagisa's especially in the west. Once there was a case that sparked some indignation about a mom with strong opinions on gender expression who forced her young son to dress and act like a girl from a early age. If I remember well, the mom was sued for child abuse.

As someone who has a parent like that they handled it pretty well, kind of way too well. controlative/manipulate parents not tend to listen, no matter how well "their" child may explain it. their own trauma isn't an excuse either. yeah it gives a clearer vision on why they do it, but not an excuse. they should never be parents, and shouldn't have custody.
this is not how you handle an abusive parent like this at all, all you're doing here is giving them a slap on the wrist for no reason, you need to go harsh on monsters
“...my baby...is pulling away.....he’s leaving me” Me: NUH UH. HE AINT YOUR BABY. AND HES JUST LEARNING HOW TO DO THINGS FOR HIMSELF. HES HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR BULL-CRAP LADY

Well, yeah. The whole premise is teaching high schoolers how to assassinate and kill their teacher. I think they're, like, fifteen in this. That's traumatic shit right there.
Ok koro sensei needs to call child protective services on this lady She is an awful parent and awful person She doesn't deserve to have nagisa or any children for that matter She needs to look at herself in the mirror and say "Am I a good person?" I know this isn't in the video but in the episode she tries to make nagisa burn down the school And when he refused she went nuts and tries to make herself look like the victim in a very scary way Bottom line is that she shouldn't have a child
Nagisa needs to grow a pair and threaten her that if she doesn't accept him as her son and if she's not going to be greatful of being a mother then he WILL sever ties with her.
i agree. back then when i first watched the ending of this show i was happy seeing nagisa's parents reunited but now i realize that what his mother did to him was so grave and nagisa should've cut ties with her. she should be grateful he still thinks of her as his mom and still happy to live with her

Either way, Nagisa does actually look kinda cute with his hair downward.
Also the reason jokes about him looking like a girl make me uncomfortable.
If nagisa’s mom likes long hair then why doesn’t she grow out her hair?
Because of tramua. She is trapped in broken dreams and a terrible upbringing. That doesn't mean what she is doing is right, but that's what causes much of her behavior.
She probably believes shes passed her prime

I’m sorry you go through this. Thank you for sharing your experience and feelings. Love is with you always.

I’m pretty sure she’s the smiling titan
the voice actor for the mother did a perfect job at that role.
When the "Out Of Order" sign came over her head I laughed WAY harder than I should have.
"she's a knockout!"
"More like she will knock you out"
2:48 I know the subtitle at the top is just for the sign at the back, but "Out of Order" makes alot of sense here. Nagisa's mother clearly is taking charge here against her own son's will, which isn't something a parent should ever do. In order words she's failing as a mother, hence being out of order.
I watched this show years ago, even watched this clip a bunch of times and I just connected the "out of order" to Nagisa's mother today.
2:48 i know the out of order is for a sign but i just think its there cause of her
Very true xD
I hate how in the end his dad got back with this abusive psycho!
Seriously, she mentally, emotionally and psysically abuses her SON, get's called out by a teacher once or maybe a few others but in the end suffers NO real consequences and is in fact REWARDED for her behavior!
The little toupee confrontation at the end was hilarious, especially the little kill attempt

If I have a wife like that, I wouldn't feel comfortable to leave my kids alone with her while I was gone, let alone raised them.
Yeah. Nagisa's dad made the right choice in leaving but he should've taken Nagisa with him

It’s funny how she wants a daughter and in real life it’s the opposite
You can't choose the child you want. You get what you get.
Omg, Nagisa's Mom is A Karen

As someone who has a parent like that they handled it pretty well, kind of way too well. controlative/manipulate parents not tend to listen, no matter how well "their" child may explain it. their own trauma isn't an excuse either. yeah it gives a clearer vision on why they do it, but not an excuse. they should never be parents, and shouldn't have custody.
@panko Or find another relative to live with but yes they usually need to cut the person out of their life
Just kill them. Plenty of methods that can't realistically be linked to you.
this is not how you handle an abusive parent like this at all, all you're doing here is giving them a slap on the wrist for no reason, you need to go harsh on monsters
