  • Just 30 minutes from Iowa City and the University of Iowa we visit the largest Amish community west of the Mississippi River in Kalona, Iowa. We explore this conservative community passed over by time with 1800's living customs and also visit some local tourist bucket list destinations. We explore the Kalona Historical Village which demonstrates Iowa pioneer life in the 1800s. Find out how pioneering spirit, land grants and railroads help shape this area of the country.
    The Amana colonies are just up the road on Interstate 80 but they are different from this community. See Iowa wind turbines compared to historical windmills.

    That is quite a sight to see a horse and buggy going down the street. So, are the cheeses made and sold by the Amish? It would be a very interesting place to visit, I've never seen any Amish communities before. Great video and interesting to watch. Like 41, thanks for sharing!

    Interesting facts along the way. We actually stayed with an Amish Family in Intercourse, Pennsylvania in 2007. That was a real treat! Great video thank you for taking us along through Kalona. 🙏🏼👍🏼🤠

    Kalona, Iowa is a very nice place
    and being able to see the carriages of this community is incredible.
    Here in Nuevo León there are also Mennonite communities but they are rarely seen. The houses, clothes and lifestyle that you show us remind me of several novels of the time or movies as well. Thank you for taking us there... greetings!!

    I used to ride my bike through Kalona a lot and never knew the 'living history' village was there. Is it new (since the early '80s)?

    • @thatplace1
      @thatplace1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A sign said since 1969 but that is probably when they first established the site and it took years to develop to what is there today. The rail road depot was purchased in 1969 and then they moved it to the site.

      @@thatplace1 Thanks. It was probably there in the '80s I just forgot it was. It's a great area to ride a bike in. Lots of bike-friendly county roads. And, pretty scenery.
