Parent birds do not kill chicks for any reason. In raptor nests, the most aggressive chicks get the most food. Always. If there's not enough food for the others, they starve. That is why you see smaller chicks that eventually do not make it, they have been starved, they were not weak or sick, their eggs were laid later, hatched later, and were never given the same amount of food as the others. They were all equal when hatched. The difference was time, which could be 2 weeks, or more in a clutch of 4 to 5 chicks. Brooding time is reduced by busy parents feeding the chicks. In other nests, small chicks can be squashed by the other chicks, or just squeezed between each other. Any difference in height can prevent adequate feeding, as parents do not equally divide the food for a chick that winds up being shortened due to overcrowding. A few days of less food could doom a chick who cannot raise it's head far enough to feed, they're really tiny and weak as scrawny chicks, skinny little necks.

That nest is hardly big enough to hold six hungry birds but they managed and we can hope they all made it out on their first try at flying. The quality close up filming really was a pleasure to watch and gives us a good idea how busy the parent birds are just to feed their little ones. It would be interesting to find out how the young birds can go without water until they can fly.

I love birds they re lilltle angels so fragil. innocent and beautiful!! We sgould help them by putting a small square bowl wherw they could drink fresh water and bathe along with birds seeds . Birds have a tough life. Hot. cold weather. windy etc.I always feed the sparrows coyotes even ants in summertime I put a small tiny glass where they could drink water once the summertime is finished. the ants will leave in their own. Some people kill them people should be more compassionate with the animals. Thanks for sharing.
