    My panther boy who very recently passed, drank lots of water from a margarita glass with an ice cube, in our bath tub. It was right at mouth level without bending and... I don't know why he liked ice cubes. I miss him painfully.

    I got tired of changing my cat's water several times a day to keep it clean, so I invested in a small fish tank and placed it on the nightstand next to my bed. I also added a few fish and snails in the tank to keep the tank environment as natural as possible. I clean the tank and change the water weekly with water I get from a local natural spring (never give them tap water) I find that he drinks more often from the fish tank and when he does drink he drinks a lot! He definitely prefers the running water of the fish tank to the water bowl. I've had this fish tank for over 5 years. My cat is 10 years old and has NEVER been sick. He's perfectly healthy!

      Yeah, I heard about the chin bumps a couple of years ago. I forget what they're called, but it's chronic, meaning they don't go away. This explains why my cat Titus scratched his chin constantly. He's been gone since 2014, so I felt terrible and wished I'd known a long time ago.
      If you're looking for high-quality wet food, I *highly* recommend Weruva BFF gravy and Tiki Cat mousse. Discovered them after a $400 vet visit for a bladder stone. Wish I could post pics. My black cat shines like a new car. I've never seen a cat so shiny. I always wondered why pet food companies put pumpkin in cat food -- or seeds (like flax or chia seeds). "When do you ever see a cat gnawing on a 🎃?" Duh. If cats were out in the wild, they'd be getting those ingredients from the organs of mice & birds.

    I've been caring for cats for many years. I have never run into a problem with their drinking water close to their food. I currently have 2 cats, and they share a water bowl and have 1 food bowl each. Sometimes they swap food bowls, and they will drink and eat freely with no concern. What you say about cats being choosy about where their water bowl is...sounds to me like you may be referring to cats with a weaker survival instinct. In the wild, these animals tend to die. In a domesticated environment, we help weaker animals survive because we love them. Across the animal kingdom, the drive to drink available water tends to overcome small inconveniences. I don't believe a strong, healthy cat will avoid water to the point of dehydration if there is an available source of water.

    • @fannyholmberg6597
      @fannyholmberg6597 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure the cat will drink from a water bowl next to food but most would drink more if it were placed seperately away from it. And that's the goal after all, to help them drink a healthy amount. Not just to avoid dehydration...

    • @quellenathanar
      @quellenathanar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fannyholmberg6597 Sure if the cat isn't getting enough water, and shows any signs of dehydration, then, of course, make any changes necessary. It depends on their behavior. My cats are siblings. They do everything together. They eat their dry kibble, wash it down with water...rinse and repeat. There is another water bowl in a different part of the house. I don't ever see them drinking from it. I use that room as a large kennel in case I need to keep them away from danger if I'm working on a project...that involves power tools+sawdust etc. This instinct you speak of that is hardwired when it comes to drinking could be a strong behavior in some cats, but I think environmental/learned behavior completely overpowers it. Like I said every cat has its own personality...results may vary.

    It's true, in my cat's case, that he does not use the water dish near his food. He does drink from the water bowl in the living room, though!
    When he was younger, he had urinary problems which were probably linked to him not getting enough water. I put several large ceramic bowls of water around the house, and let him show me which he prefered. He does like large bowls, not small ones. He's 8 now, and has had no urinary issues for years. urinary blockages can be DEADLY for male cats!

    We share our home with our cat Medb and after decades of parenting cats, most of whom lived beyond 10 years, (Attila was over 20 when she left us) we have a routine when feeding her. It's a no brainer when it comes to not putting the food and water dish near the litter box. Would any of us want to have dinner in the toilet area? Also, we had a cat named Fergus who liked to lick the tap. I solved that problem by getting him a cat fountain. He would lap the water from the discharge port. Medb also has a cat fountain as well as a backup water dish should the power go out. She drinks spring water the same as we do. I don't like the smell or taste of chlorine and I'm sure she doesn't either. For food she gets both wet and dry and I also treat her with my homemade chicken broth. Before you ask it is plain broth - no veggies or herbs as I use it as a base for different cuisines. The trick to caring for a cat is putting yourself in their place and asking yourself is this something I would want or like.

      If the fountain isn't working it could be because it is plastic. Cats don't like the smell of plastic and the bacteria that forms on the plastic can lead to breakouts on their chins. Try a ceramic fountain instead. They're a little more pricey, but your cats are worth it! NEVER give your cats tap water!

    0:30 Maybe that is your opinion, sins cats become household cats (maybe before ancient Egypt), their food and drink were put next to each other, no problem and their is no reason why it should not be done in this way. 1:15 This is my opinion, there is no better water bowl than a clay (pottery) bowl for their water. Try it.Take different kinds of bowls (stainless steel, plastic, glass and even porcelain, which is also good) and a clay (pottery) bowl, fill it up with water, put it along side each other and see which one your cat prefer.Clay just give that earthy taste to water. Bowls must also be big enough so that the cat"s whiskers dont touch the sides of the bowl, it is irritating to them. 2:05 By the way, water fountains are made out of plastic.

      Fish need freedom or a big tank, not a wide vase. And what they don’t need is the stress of a predator drinking out of that thing.

    • @cynthiaschade3889
      @cynthiaschade3889 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your cats are trying to tell you something Kristin. If you're filling the fountain with tap water, that's your first problem. Never provide tap water for your cats to drink. They may drink it but its not good for them. Secondly, instinctively cats know that if there fish in the water that its safe to drink. They also know that running water is probably a better source than standing water. Natural spring water has beneficial bacteria that they need to help with digestion. Try scaling up to a small fish tank with a filter. Vacuum the bottom of the tank and replace 1/3 of the water once per week (never with tap water). Your fish will be happy and so will your cats! Keep the moss balls! They will help keep the algae down in the tank!

    My cat gets wet in the mornings(with a little dry scattered over) and then in the evening a small can (95g) of tuna in springwater,which she will usually eat over the course of the night when she is peckish.

      I read that cats shouldn't be fed tuna on a regular basis since tuna has high concentration of mercury. Because cats are so small, the mercury accumulates in their system. Research what high levels of mercury does.

    Dry food is full of carbs and is not good for cats in general. Wet food is more natural. Urinary problems come to cats who eat nothing but dry food. It is awful for cats! In nature, the only time they would eat carbs would be if they ate the contents of what they killed stomach... so many cats died in the 1980's from the Ash in the dry food. The only ones who weren't dying were the cats who ate wet canned food only.

      I had a cat years ago named Rolly. Rolly would only drink from a source of running water. She would go into the bathroom and drink from the tub spigot. So, I started leaving the spigot open slightly just so it dripped enough that she could get a good drink whenever she wanted it. This was before the invention of cat water fountains. Today I just use a small fish tank I have set up in my bedroom. The fish are happy, and my cat's happy. He also prefers running water.

    Don't forget to keep the water bowl full to the top so the cat's whiskers won't touch the inside of the bowl while drinking. The same for food. Cat's whiskers are so sensitive the the cat may stop eating because the bowl is too deep and she needs to go into the bowl, touching the bowl with whiskers. I use large plates with a slight lip on the edges to keep the food from falling out.

    I changed it once a day.

    For he was born with constipation
    Just one day without it he's fiber, he gets so constipated he crys.
    The vet doesn't know why he is this way but has been sence he was a kitten.

I remembered being told by a veterinarian many many years ago that male cats can develop stones easily because of their anatomy. My cats are brother and sister. Same litter. So being I had a male and knowing what I did, I trained them to drink water on demand. So know 10 years later at least 95% of the time they will drink when I tell them to…“take a drink of water”! I will say my female listens better. But is it a surprise to any other female, that the male does what he wants when he wants? Ha Ha Ha

First I’d like to say my cats are from a feral mom. A catch and release. The mom was spayed after this last litter. But she wasn’t able to be kept as a house pet so they had to release her. I felt (feel) bad now that the cold weather is coming. But at least she won’t have anymore litters. This litter produced 4. All adopted. You’re right about the dry food. But that’s why they need the water. As far as feral cats, do we really know when these guys are sick or in pain? I don’t think so. Most animals in the wild just go and hide. One day the cats are there then they’re gone. I believe my cats are dogs in cat costumes! LoL. Thanks for your reply. But you’re probably right. Who knows. Ha Ha have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Vet advice is that cats get most of their water from their food. When our cat was younger she would not drink water or milk. With water she would drink it rarely and not usually in front of us. She showed no interest in a water fountain. Now she's older (she's 17 years old) she does drink more water and does like to drink milk almost daily. She has recently tested positive for a hyperthyroidism. Having a 2nd test to confirm, because the vet say that makes cats tend to eat more and she is the opposite. Vets say cats don't need dry food.

It contains chlorine, which kills the good bacteria in their digestive system and can lead in time to all sorts of health issues. Instead, buy them spring water by the gallon or better yet find a local natural spring in your area. The spring water contains beneficial bacteria and gut flora that they need to keep them healthy. I set up a fish tank for my cat that he has access to whenever he's thirsty. He doesn't bother the fish and he benefits from the flora in the water. He also prefers the running water. I vacuum the bottom of the tank and refill 1/3 of the water once a week. That's it! Literally takes me about 15 minutes a week and I know my kitty and my fish are all happy and healthy. My cat is over 10 years and has NEVER been sick and is perfectly healthy! PLEASE CONSIDER

      If your cat is not drinking the water that doesn't necessarily mean he/she is not thirsty. It means they don't like the water itself. depriving your cat of water is not the way to deal with this problem. Your cat MUST ALWAYS have access to clean fresh water whether he/she drinks it or not. You may "think" you have solved the problem, but you're doing what's easiest for you not what's best for your cat. Try investing in a fountain and give your cat spring water instead of tap water. I promise you your cat will start drinking!

    My 24-year-old Siamese likes his bowl of rainwater in the garden best and a silver plated bowl in the kitchen and pottery bowl in the hall with either mineral or distilled or filtered water! If he needs homeopathy, it just goes in the water. I think he has lived this long because he has four organic prawns every day which gives him zinc and sea minerals which makes up for the lost minerals in the distilled water. He gets very angry and chases my other cat if his prawns are not on time, I think because zinc is calming! He also has roast chicken, organic salmon and organic biscuits and coconut Kefir, shared with me at bedtime! He is incredibly fit and lively, I am so lucky. Significantly I have not vaccinated him since I adopted him at the age of eight as a show cat, when his owner died after a flu vaccination. Now, he has entirely homeopathy, as I do myself! The problem is there are finicky cats who early in their lives developed a preference to Fancy Feast dry kibble and other dry food and flatly refuse FF canned or any other canned or pouched food, I've got one like that, she's a few months short of 14 years old and in excellent health and fitness. She has lived mostly outdoors in a quiet safe neighborhood and is very street-smart. She's always had plenty of energy and still races around and climbs trees and fences just like a kitten.

    My boy drinks out of tall glasses only, placed in the living room. Why? Dunno.

    One thing not mentioned here about adding meat flavored broth, such as chicken broth, to entice your cat to drink water is that you can't kea e it for very long because the broth will go bad if left too lig when kitty doesn't drink all of it because it will. begin to get bacteria it and could make your cat sick. That's what my veterinarian told me about my late cat who would hardly ever drink water. As a result, he developed chronic kidney disease and he had to have prescription food, medications, and regular fluid administration for several years. It got very costly and was a lot of work to care for him. So, if you try adding meat flavored broth, you must ask your vet exactly what kind of broth to add to your cat's water. Always ask questions of your vet about your cat's health. Please try all these things to see what will work if your cat doesn't like to drink water.

      Just have to make sure the broth is low sodium if given to kitty.
