Next time you make a Magazine spring, once you get it wound around the bar and you finish winding it, either tack weld the end of the spring in place or clamp it so that it stays wound around the shape forming bar, then tap the 4 sides to square them up and heat treat it in place. Then when you take it off the forming bar it should be ready to install in the magazine.

I just found your excellent build site. I’ve got 20+ yrs. in mfg. management of production OEM magazines for mostly MA & CT gun companies and can add some details. Many present tubes are 420L stainless (“L” restricts carbon content & reduces tube cracking), arbor press forming the tube around the mandrel will improve each form (similar to metal stamping), production tubes are TIG seam welded, & heat treating is to RC40 - 45 hardness (in vacuum furnace). Carbon steel 1018 - 1020 is the non- stainless tube versions with same hardness.
If you heat (simple heat gun or butane torch) the spring (and let it cool) while still loaded on the mandrel, it might allow for a better formed spring with less 'corrective' work after you remove it from the mandrel.Just my 2 pennies... :-) Great Work!

Could you have thrown the whole mandrel in with the spring connected to it to Take the stresses out? Would that have avoided the re-bending of each turn?
Thanks for showing the spring building process. It was a source of contention for me. I finally built one that did the trick, but the magazine feed lips and angle are holding me back now. I have successfully fed 2 rounds without hangup. I am learning that you really just have to keep tweaking things until the point of mechanical harmony lol.

looking at the plans it looks like you could use the given magazine size so it could feed 9mm Luger or 380 depending on how you have the bolt set up. A 380 is roughly 1 inch in length and a 9mm is roughly 1.16 inches, both shoot the same diameter bullet as well. Whenever I can figure out where to get the sheet metal for a half ways decent price i plan on building it and hopefully i can have it run 9mm without to many modifications. Your videos and Tater79bj's videos have been a great resource for understanding how to do some of the processes that i was a little sketchy on before.
Yes, it would fit both if built from plans. 9mm Luger however, is probably a little to powerful for this blow back design. A delayed or locking breech would be in order for safe operation.
I'd like to know more about the oven heat treating thing. I've used a lot of this spring steel wire over the years in rc model planes but never knew there was a way to heat treat it after forming. How is it done?
I am loving this series as I was looking for one that used the MK2 plans. I have an aluminum 1911 frame and to be honest this frame should be able to hold up to a .40, .45, .9mm and of course all the lower calibers. I know the plans call for it to be chambered in 380 but the real magic in this style of firearm happens at the slide. More notably the slide/recoil spring either or. For the more powerful rounds one would just either need to add a much stronger recoil spring or take the design of the breech that is welded to the slide sides and increase the weight. Increasing the weight of the slide and maybe beefing up the slide stop should be the only things required for a larger round (excluding making different size mags for it). I read some physics/math work of a guy who researched how to make a functional firearm with just using a formula that would give you the required spring power and the required bolt weight. In this case the slide is acting as the bolt meaning with increased pressures the increased weight should keep the firearm functioning exactly the same as the .380 I only mention this because it is a Colt clone. Although the innards work very different it is made to look like a Colt by the designer of it. Your doing a much better job of making it your own and I see you are not afraid to deviate from the plans in order to get a much more appealing firearm both in function and cosmetic. I can't wait to see it finished. I'd love to see this made again in .45 or for you to design a .45 pistol. Great work man.
The bigger rounds do require a substantial increase in slide weight. Not impossible. I would like to move on to a self designed piece when this one is complete.
Clinton Westwood Can't wait. One quick question about your other pistol. I am squaring up and filing the slide channels right now on the slide side of it. Do you recall how deep you went with the slide rails and how far off the frame the frame rails sat? I only ask as I just want to make sure I am not going too shallow. I fear if too shallow and the rails too low it has a possibility of the slide sides flexing under pressure and allowing the channels to fall off the rails. Sorry if I ask too many questions but I just want to be safe when doing this. Thank You for your time.
Hi Clinton, love the work your doing and your making great process! I apologize if this comes out wrong but, if you are using a welder thats lighting goes right into the camera lenses and the UV are in the observation of it I believe it can cause damage to the long term use of your camera, as you can see around 3:57 there is bending light on the recording end, ill have to do my research again but i don't want any of your equipment being damaged. +SomethingOriginalXx For the most part I try to avoid direct exposure to the lens and sensor. I've permanently scarred the older CCD's in video cameras by accidentally shooting the sun. These newer sensors seem a little more resistant. This video was shot on a very old Canon Elph Powershot. It's been abused and hammered about for many years. Seems to be somewhat okay with it:) Anyway, I appreciate the concern. The failure of this camera wouldn't stop me posting. I think sub-consciously I want a new camera.
I've never understood how they know what strength of spring to use. If it's too weak, it won't push the bullets up.....too stiff and it might jam the gun.
I'm not sure about the "springiness" of stainless. Depends on the alloy I guess. Spring development to me is more magic than science. I eyeball it then usually have to downgrade on the gauge.

I have heard you can also make springs with welding wire I've been looking up lots of information about making Springs a 7% carbon content is supposedly supposed to be the best for making Springs but you have to know a whole bunch of tempering processes for making Springs
its 0.7% carbon 7% is more like cast iron 0.25% is mild 0.42% has max tempered strentgh 0.9% max untempered strength the carbon in cast iron is not in a molecule withe the iron it is in graphite pockets and the iron is pure

I used a 1/2" bit. On the 3/4" thick billet, that leaves a nice 1/8" on both sides. I used a 1/2" for the recoil spring area as well. The area for the barrel lug is just 1/4" leaving lots of material for strength.
I didn't measure and I'm not home at the moment. Still working the other job:( I have a collection of music wire that I will be making my own spring. I tested one yesterday. The gauge looked right until I wound it. Couldn't compress that sucker with any reasonable force. I will document my spring explorations.
It's called music wire, but it is used for all kinds of stuff. It comes in all thicknesses. I buy it from hobby stores. It's commonly used for push rods and such. It can be heat relieved.

I make a lot of 40S&W magazines for a homemade vector and if you plan to make a lot of magazines you may want to buy a hydraulic press and weld up a simple die to fold them similar to an AK folding jig. This is basically where I got the idea: th-cam.com/video/sDppu3Mcj6E/w-d-xo.html You will need to make a base folding die, and a rear folding die (which is spaced for the outside diameter of the magazine, and a strip of sheet metal is place in to fold the first rear bend). Once the blank is cut, you can crank out one magazine tube per 5 minutes. Oh, and looking beautiful! Can't wait to see what's next!
+Dave Smith You have the right idea. I will only punch out 4-5 mags for this build. Not a mass production. I'm really amazed that people find this hard to do. I can reproduce, slowly of course, but very similar items fairly easily.
+Clinton Westwood Gunsmithing is one of those things where you have to use your doing brain vs your thinking brain. Most of the times when you hear someone saying "it can't be done" or give alternatives, it is because they themselves were to intimidated to try it. For example, I had spent years trying to get a good rifling machine built up and I just could not do it. Then you came out with your absolutely ingenious design and now I rarely have to buy any barrel blanks. Sometimes it just takes the ingenuity of someone else to get that last puzzle piece and make a project work Although I have to say that magazine making has been a frustrating endeavor for me. You essentially are trying to learn nearly a century worth of sheet metal technology for just one project. I still have not cracked the curved magazine dilemma perfectly yet. Only about 1/5 of my AR-15 magazines end up usable (and only after considerable hand fitting). The rest are junk. I'm not even going to consider trying to make AK mags at this point. Tolerances are a fine line between quality and junk. I have made and scrapped at least 20 magazine dies in my endeavors and they are not cheap since they use a lot of metal. Still, nothing feels better than when you finally "get it". And I love being self sufficient. Then in the "apocalypse" you can set up shop and have others run out into the wastes to get materials while you sit all cozy building weapons and growing food to trade. Cheeki breeki. The more people we get into playing this game, the easier it is going to get. You and Mr parabellum are doing a great service by bringing back the true gunsmithing trade. No fancy tools, no factory bought BS. Just your grey matter and a lot of elbow grease.
+Dave Smith You nailed it on the elbow grease. I have the financial means to do this with CNC machines of all types. I have no prejudices against such tools, I just chose to do it with the simplest methods possible. Of course within reason, I think electric motors are wonderful. :)

I have one firearm (my first) I made entirely by hand, using a hand drill, files and a hacksaw and it took me at least 4 months to make because I would screw up a part or just get exhausted from the effort required to cut a relatively thin piece. Nightmares. I have the utmost sympathy for the old craftsmen who's entire profession was cutting the early screws by hand.

Depending on the finish quality, anywhere from 60 to 250 hours.

Spring was not stainless. I'll measure later and let you know. I use many gauges
The steel wire I used was .032" or aprox .8 mm.

I make a lot of 40S&W magazines for a homemade vector and if you plan to make a lot of magazines you may want to buy a hydraulic press and weld up a simple die to fold them similar to an AK folding jig.

You will need to make a base folding die, and a rear folding die (which is spaced for the outside diameter of the magazine, and a strip of sheet metal is place in to fold the first rear bend). Once the blank is cut, you can crank out one magazine tube per 5 minutes.

+Dave Smith You have the right idea. I will only punch out 4-5 mags for this build. Not a mass production. I'm really amazed that people find this hard to do. I can reproduce, slowly of course, but very similar items fairly easily.

Gunsmithing is one of those things where you have to use your doing brain vs your thinking brain. Most of the times when you hear someone saying "it can't be done" or give alternatives, it is because they themselves were to intimidated to try it.
For example, I had spent years trying to get a good rifling machine built up and I just could not do it. Then you came out with your absolutely ingenious design and now I rarely have to buy any barrel blanks. Sometimes it just takes the ingenuity of someone else to get that last puzzle piece and make a project work
Although I have to say that magazine making has been a frustrating endeavor for me. You essentially are trying to learn nearly a century worth of sheet metal technology for just one project. I still have not cracked the curved magazine dilemma perfectly yet. Only about 1/5 of my AR-15 magazines end up usable (and only after considerable hand fitting). The rest are junk. I'm not even going to consider trying to make AK mags at this point. Tolerances are a fine line between quality and junk. I have made and scrapped at least 20 magazine dies in my endeavors and they are not cheap since they use a lot of metal. Still, nothing feels better than when you finally "get it". And I love being self sufficient. Then in the "apocalypse" you can set up shop and have others run out into the wastes to get materials while you sit all cozy building weapons and growing food to trade. Cheeki breeki.
The more people we get into playing this game, the easier it is going to get. You and Mr parabellum are doing a great service by bringing back the true gunsmithing trade. No fancy tools, no factory bought BS. Just your grey matter and a lot of elbow grease.
+Dave Smith You nailed it on the elbow grease. I have the financial means to do this with CNC machines of all types. I have no prejudices against such tools, I just chose to do it with the simplest methods possible. Of course within reason, I think electric motors are wonderful. :)

I have one firearm (my first) I made entirely by hand, using a hand drill, files and a hacksaw and it took me at least 4 months to make because I would screw up a part or just get exhausted from the effort required to cut a relatively thin piece. Nightmares. I have the utmost sympathy for the old craftsmen who's entire profession was cutting the early screws by hand.
