      +Clinton Westwood Out of curiosity, do you ever plan to get a lathe? I use a mini lathe and mill which is good enough for all my gunsmithing. Only cost me about $1200 for both ("only"). But you do get your money's worth back in time saved and it opens up the door for more approaches to little problems.

      +Dave Smith Yes, I will at some point. The expense is not an issue. What I'm attempting here on this channel is demonstrate how the average bozo in his garage can build acceptable firearms. I think as soon as I introduce more complex and expensive machine tools, I will lose a good portion of my audience. If I change tooling, I'll start another channel. This one I want to remain pure to the "Home Depot" crowd. Does that make sense. It's limiting, but very challenging for me to stay with the philosophy.

    if you can, run the reamer slower, around 120rpm. different cooling aids give different diameters, oil makes it slightly larger, emulsion makes it slightly smaller. if the alignment of tool and part isn't 100% perfect, give one part space to move, either the tool or the part. I'm a professional, its my job to work with stuff like that but I'm very impressed of your abilities to improvise at home. the real word MacGyver.

    Thank you very much! I love the detail. That's 5/8 4130 drawn on manderal tube? Where are you making your calculations for what diameter the barrel tube should be, given the pressure of a .380? Will you be hard chroming the bore to extend the rifling?

    i think you made a mistake with the barrel. the way you measured it the lands will be the diameter of the bullet instead of the grooves. when you cut away material for the rifling later it will be bigger than the bullet if it fits the barrel now.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +james dieter You can't see on the video, but there's a slight countersink to each end where I deburred it. The bullet sits about .030" proud of the barrel. That should be enough for good contact in the grooves.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  7 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @scotthaddad563
    @scotthaddad563 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question; If the bore is the same size as the bullet, then the grooves are an even larger diameter, how do the lands CUT into the bullet? It seems that propellent gasses will escape around the bullet through the grooves.
    Just an observation or am I missing something here?

    Love the channel , hate to be a safety nut. But when you were reaming , holding that tube. If the reamer managed to stick and spin that bracket it could of hurt you. Anyhow awesome work. I wish I could see you build either a blowback 5.56 or scrap ak.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +scar17gion Thank you for your concern. I sometimes slip a little because of familiarity with my tools. That was a fairly substantial vise it was mounted in. I suspect that the round tube would spin in the jaws long before rotating the vise. Anyway, thanks again, I must be careful and promote safe practices. The number of viewers that are starting to watch deserve as much.

  • @JoeSkylynx

    Is it possible to cast some parts with a backyard refinery and mold or would it be too non-structurally sound for a firearm?
    Another thing, you have mentioned you plan on doing a more professional gunsmithing series on another account. Have you ever considered doing something similar to the Man At Arms guys, and building weapons found in video games and test firing them at a range? I can already hear people requesting the Fallout 3 Combat Shotgun.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joey Skylynx I suppose the trigger could be cast. None of the FCG parts. Maybe part of the frame. I haven't ever cast DIY stuff and don't know what kind of quality one can achieve.
      The other channel plans are quite a ways in the future. It will have to be unique enough to stand out. Your idea holds merit.

    • @JoeSkylynx
      @JoeSkylynx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, regarding the video game concept. You could also adapt that idea to include the situations in which the weapons were produced and try to replicate it.

      Roll paper around a wooden dowel and put a bit of glue on the outside of the paper and put another strip of paper over that and repeat let it dry. And find some washers that fit in it. And super glue or epoxy them together. And glue them into the bottom of the paper case thats gunna be your priming pocket.
      You can use cap gun caps as primers and use powder or make black powder
      You can use bb's for a shotgun load or cast a lead ball for a bullet. And insert
      Powder
      Wad
      Projectile
      And caping wad.
      And you have an entirely homemade bullet

    • @calebsmith6202

      @Jason Krieger
      I assume you're looking to fire live ammunition from a blank firing gun? Most blank guns are not made from steels suitable for handling the high pressure detonation of a cartridge. If I were to use 9mm P.A.K. as the base for a cartridge, I'd create my bullet to match the diameter of the barrel, and then taper the case around the bullet, however this will lead to headspacing issues if the cartridge is too short to properly chamber, or even feeding issues with the magazine if the follower doesn't apply pressure correctly. What kind of weapon would you use to convert?

    • @tesstickle7267
      @tesstickle7267 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacob Krieger not that i know of..easier to just buy inert 380 or put a lead ball into the pak round. Can't use standard barrel though. Obviously i know these things seeing as I'm from England;) I'd never consider it as that would make me a criminal lol compound bow is just as good and legal

  • @jeffreynelson2660
    @jeffreynelson2660 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you ream the barrel to the dia of the slug, how do the rifling grooves grip? I would think that the OD of the rifling would match the dia of the slug so the bullet is squeezed into the grooves.. Wrong?

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The barrel is reamed undersized so that there's a couple of thousands of an inch to squish the bullet into the grooves for making the sucker spin.

I'm thinking that by the volume of the comments, that I need to do a Krikit type build in .22LR. I've had a lot of feedback on that, and now it's got me curious. That is after I see a mag full of .380 ACP's spitting out the front of this one:)

      Definitely they don't match the quality of a self honed reamer. Still, firearms can take quite a bit of cut corners and still perform well if the design is well engineered.
      One of my friends who I learned a lot of gunsmithing from built a bolt action "rifle" (legally it is a pistol) for benchrest shooting. Literally the entire gun came from a scrap heap of rusted Chinese mystery metal. He used a short barrel and a really thick wall diameter making this thing unwieldy as heck but this thing is a sub MOA rifle with his personal record of a 1.43" (or something, I just know it was under 1.5") group at 200 yards with some SSK cartridge (don't remember the specific diameter, might have been the whisper (blackout) actually). He just reamed a hole and installed a barrel liner. It doesn't hold a candle to the "real" benchrest rifles, but it definitely is no slouch.
      There is a video on youtube of some guys shooting a savage bolt action mounted on a 2x4. Literally.

      +coelhoteixeira Same technique as the magazine spring. I mounted a round rod, 5/16" I think, in the drill press and wrapped music wire around it. Then normalized it.

      +Argonco2 9x19 needs locking or very heavy bolt, 9x18 doesn't need lock but might be too powerful for homemade guns, 9x17 is what he is using, very good caliber for pistols without locking and gives it a long parts life plus is cheap.

    Hmmmm I don't see the purpose of rifling the barrel now you can see the projectile fits in easily if you open it anymore the bullet will slope around like in a loose vagina open the end go t the case or there will be no accuracy and the projectile won't engage the rifling. hmmmmmm I need a pooh. nothing worse then diahorea was wiping my arse and my finger broke th paper lost me finger up to the 2nd knuckle.
