  • Hi guys,
In this tutorial, I show you guys how to trace like an artist. Now tracing is considered bad or something an artist shouldn't do and I'm not suggesting you guys to use it every-time you're drawing something. But you can still use it when you're in a haste or just to practice as a beginner.
I hope you liked it. If you did please give this video a big thumbs up. Also, subscribe :)

Tracing is an artform in and of itself. It's no different than using a reference photo. I trace in all of my illustrations (portraits) but I add my own style to them. I use the reference photo directly behind my line art/drawing instead of to the side. I've never been good at drawing but I love illustrations. It's the only way I can make them. I don't feel any less by doing it this way. The outcome is very different than the original photo.

Thanks for the tutorial! I’ve been an artist for over 15 years, and when I was a child, I had the a certain mindset about tracing as if not tracing placed me in an elite group. And yes, not tracing was crucial for my development as an artist. But given my perfectionism, I’m going to try something new and to go ahead and trace my reference now that I’m getting into digital art, just for the sake of time . I care less about the drawing and more about learning the digital tools so I don’t want to waste time getting the drawing “perfect”. At the end of the day, who cares. If someone is really judging someone for tracing, they have a lot of growing up to do.

Believe it for not, most of that old art is actually not realism, but were portraiture done in a stylized way depending on the period. It's not that they couldnt paint with immense detail, they weren't going for photo realism. That being said the pieces were created with great technical skill. The light, color and atmosphere of a painting still comes across as "real looking," masterfully rendered, and original.

You admit to tracing. You know that tracing is helpful, heck some of the masters used shadow boxes and traced. But, because you want to be thought of as a "serious" Artist, you shame everyone that traces. Who said that being an Artist means having the ability to draw? I HATE to draw and I don't. An guess what, I do not care what some snobbish so-called Artist thinks as long as my work keeps selling and being loved by others. TRACING is NOT CHEATING or bad. Why do you spend so much time justifying the fact that you are tracing a picture? It is a good tool to teach people who are learning. No reason to shame anyone who uses this as a good way to practice. Plus if you don’t think tracing is a good idea….why make a tutorial for it?

Pros don't trace, only amateurs do. It is not art, it is copying. The whole point of art is to learn how to draw by learning how to SEE what is in front of you, from life. Also, photographs are copyrighted. You are stealing someone's concept, their imagination as to how they set up the lighting, the composition and it is their intellectual property you are stealing and claiming it as your own original work. You must credit your sources or pay for images. Or, get them from creative common sites. Disclaimers do not cover you for theft. The outcome matters if you cheat, you betcha.
