- I tried to sail from Brighton to Portsmouth, but the currents are too strong so I make a diversion to cows harbor on the Isle of Wight. There were no cows.

Those under water barriers were installed to protect Portsmouth from German Submarines during WW2. A series of nets were stretched between the forts and at the other end of the Solent to seal both Portsmouth Naval base and Southampton from attack.
Cool i bet there are not many boats with a USA flag in Brighton Harbor ... That would be a cool video Harbor hopping all over Europe , I think one of the biggest pulls for subscribers is that you smile through every problem and that you are so cool headed while doing it .

Portsmouth would of been a great place to stay Sam. The historic dockyard is very close to the Harbour mooring. The 250 year old HMS Victory would of been an excellent visit...Maybe next time!
The trick to getting into Portsmouth Harbour against the ebb is to keep left in shallow water, and then hug the West shore by Fort Blockhouse through the narrows. If there is sufficient depth, approaching from the Inner Swatchway avoids most adverse tides, and then it is just the narrows to contend with. Avoiding the maximum ebb helps.
Oh my gosh, Sam -- the images of Forth Myers are truly heartbreaking. Knowing how Ian affected your gram and your family, it really hits home. You guys take care.
That submerged barrier you went over is an anti submarine barrier built before World War 1 to protect Portsmouth. It was cut off after World War 2 at low water, but at very low spring tides it is visible above water. Rule of thumb for small craft is, if you don't want your keel ripped off, cross it above half tide, otherwise take a detour around Horse Sand Fort.
Or go through the very well marked gap pretty much halfway between fort and shore😳😊
The Brittany ferries ship was the Bretagne, first ship I ever worked on during my trainee days as an engineer. Fine ship, unfortunately taken out of the fleet soon, it will be missed

Of all the sailing channels here on TH-cam, this one gives the best feel for what it's like to single hand a small boat without spending a boatload of money (ha ha). I worry a little about you. A working reliable engine is gives you a margin of safety that you don't seem to have.

The yellow pole isn't the submarine barrier, it's lights to guide the aircraft carriers in & out of port.

Yeah, I thought it looked familiar. I wanted to chuckle when Sam called it a "cruise ship". I am not close to being a naval architect, but even to my untrained eye just one look at all the freeboard that big ship has, and of course the Cunard markings, gave it away.
Cool as ice with no engine then anchors for the night in the exposed South Coast. You're a badass sailor man love your vids!

Add a vacuum gauge to your fuel system It ends a lot of guessing, makes your life easier
I've been so many times spat out of the harbour too hahaha I always go back to the front of the fort and heave to for an hour or 2

Small world I’m born and raised Punta Gorda boy myself. Living up in the panhandle these day, but all my family is still down in Punta Gorda / North Fort Myers’s area. Glad to hear your family stayed safe during the storm. My family said this one was worse than hurricane Charlie by far. I’ll probably end up down there real soon myself to help out my parents with their repairs. Enjoy watching your adventures, safe travels.

The ebb tide can be vicious getting into Portsmouth. It’s only normally like that for an hour or two. You can anchor right outside on the swashway for it to calm down a little. Thanks for the video!
Best wishes for your rip back to Ft Myers. You did brilliantly to negotiate Portsmouth and Cowes, neither of which is easy first time.

My boat lives right round where you were going (hasler) I've been caught out twice by the tide coming out of the harbour but managed to get through. its crazy how fast it is through there!
In Hawaii the goat is called a kao. Pronounced: cow
In Thailand rice is called cow also the knee diff pronounced.
Sam, I had similar issues with my Yanmar last year...would run after bleeding for varying amounts of time, then stop. Turned out to be the low pressure fuel pump, a fairly inexpensive part but a booger to install. Diagnosis was made based on a tiny fuel presence on touching the pump (it's almost impossible to see on my engine). Supposedly, a rare failure, but something to keep in mind. Thanks for the great videos and your consistently positive attitude :^)

Check your filters, check for air leaks.. diesel loves clean fuel, no air and lots of air.

That happened to me with my first boat which had an outboard at exactly the same place. I had to hang around Gillkicker point until the tide changed.
Dammit! I was in Portsmouth then. Could have told you about the current and you weren't even around Hurst Point!

hi sam ..i been watching your earlier vids and just wanted to give u heads up on jybeing ..good to have preventer going foward but when u jybe like that the boom has nowhere to go but up ..thats when worst damage occurs ..if u have preventer going foward + a vertical preventer to the midship gunnel it stops boom going up and stays solid triangulated ..u can set it up on a small boom mainsheet block , quick release on hooks so removeable and run lines back to cockpit for quick release if you need to ..only need one for both sides just switch it over ..i circumnavigated 3 times and swear by it : ) of course need to be careful of this setup in strong winds

Hey Sam, you most likely have a pinhole in your fuel line. Safe yourself a lot of grief and just replace the line from your diesel tank to the external filter, and from there to the engine (yanmar 2qm15?).
That little air leak is enough to screw up the reliably of the motor.

So nice of you to go back to Ft Myers to help Your family. My dad and stepmom were visiting us in SC on their way back to ft Myers when the hurricane hit. That have a place just south of the bridge that goes to Cape Coral. Their place is fine but they decided to not go down for a few more weeks.

No cows in Cowes eh? I used to keep a 27 ft yacht at Newhaven (good safe harbour in any state of wind or tide) and you misjudge the tides along the S Coast and the Solent at your peril. Even worse when you get down around Cherbourg, the Channel Islands and St Malo. (St Malo really worth visiting btw.) I once spent an miserable night caught against the tide trying to get to Lézardrieux.
Sam, love watching your videos. I am here in cape coral currently cutting trees damaged by the hurricane that are over the right of way. Let me know if you want to go for a bucket truck ride!
I have just looked at Portsmouth on Navionics. It's all very complex but you did very well. I don't know when you made the attempt, but you would have had the spring tides between the 9th and 12th October, so like the entrance to the Golfe du Morbihan in southern Brittany. Also, there are few areas outside Portsmouth where you can anchor. You did well to go to Cowes, especially with a temperamental engine. I have never sailed on the Solant, but it seems tricky. Good luck with your wintering and I send you my thoughts for when you get back to the devastation caused by the hurricane.

Sam. Please find a way to contact me. Im dying a little every time your engine quits. Diesel engines are my specialty. I can probably talk you through some solutions. Also, keep up the good work. My westsail32 is about 2 years from taking on a similar trip.
My current hypothesis is that you have a tiny leak under a portion of the suction side of the fuel system. It will work fine until an air bubble builds up to a sufficient size that it causes a filter or some portion to draw a slug of air into the injection pump. At which point it loses prime and stalls. Often if you have a filter reducing flow, the air bubble will accumulate wherever the pressure is below atmosphere otherwise it would leak out. Less of an issue if your tanks are gravity fed to your injection or lift pump.
This Guy went to the most expensive school in North America. Engine 'issues' are just all part of the drama......

Yeah don’t think you missed much by not getting into Portsmouth…..I love your videos as I am also a solo lady sailor and was in Norway/Skagerrak this summer having come from the Solent originally. I love your laid back attitude, I think many pompous British sailors could take a few lessons from you. The only time I was criticised for anchoring without an anchor ball up was in the Southampton Water.

Cowes and surrounds are such a delight. Been there on many occasions and would say that you did better in anchoring in Cowes than Portsmouth. Best view of Portsmouth is when you're leaving 😉
Great content, Sam. Cowes is pretty nice anyway. Portsmouth (or Pompy as some locals call it) is an interesting place … I guess you missed a trip around the historic Naval Dockyard.

Do you have an outboard primer bulb in your fuel line. Maked filling the filter easy. Nissan even install them in their diesel powered vehicles.

Suspect an air leak in the fuel system? I just had that on my boat with the same symptoms. It took all day to track down, but ended up being a bad o-ring on the Rayco filter.
Yes I think it was a leak from improper fuel lines
You aren't the first to go backwards fighting the ebb from Portsmouth. You didn't miss much in Gosport though.
