  • A great passage in a fair NNW F4 wind. Dell Quay is well inland at the top of Chichester Harbour. The video shows heaving-to and taking down and putting up the topsail etc.

    Another good video David. Every time I watch your videos or go out in my Mirror it strikes me how much fun can be had from a small boat made of plywood.

    Great sailing, I learnt to sail by myself in a mirror.
    Then went on to sailing 34 yacht then on to 45 meters tall ship as first officer.
    Hopefully we will see more shortly from you.

    Excellent, I've been really inspired by your YT work. i'm getting my wooden Mirror ready to start sailing in July. A few minor repairs, paint and varnishing. I've a good anchor getting the safety kit and plan to teach myself. I will be joining DCA once i'm happy with the basics. I too would love to see and do Mirror cruise camping. Thank you for posting.

      Thank you, Andy. Just start off gently, row the boat around a bit, then try raising a sail in light winds. Build up experience very slowly.

    Thank you. I am a fan of you for years. My Mirror is a little bit the same as yourse. Same sails and motor. But i have stil not the courage to go om the open sea. I do not trust the strong tide en its influence on the boat.

    I would like to ask. How much difference your top sail makes verses the small work to raise and lower it? Thx.

    • @msf60khz
      @msf60khz  ปีที่แล้ว

      The topsail makes a worthwhile difference. It is similar to taking out a reef. But it must be adjusted correctly so it is pulling. Without the topsail in strong winds, the low rig makes the boat very easy to control. David

    I'm just starting out with my mirror in the river Brue (Bristol Channel). I'm already noticing how a couple of modifications could help. I see you have your mainsheet going to down to the tiller on this video but not some of your others - what have you settled on? And do you think there is any risk of it lifting the tiller/rudder assembly out of it's pintles? Also, you appear to have introduced some friction to the steering allowing you to take your hand off the tiller but I can't see from the video how - can you elaborate on that?
    Many thanks for your videos which really helped inspire me to get back into sailing and get my mirror

    • @msf60khz
      @msf60khz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could try to send you a photo of the friction device on the Mirror Discussion Forum,
      www.mirrordiscussforum.org/
      My tiller is extra strong with very good pintles, so no strength issue. Taking the sheet to the centre makes it much lighter and it avoids it fouling the O/B. I use a big Holt ratchet block.
      Good luck with the sailing. D

    how do you compare your gaff to the original Gunter? seems a lot of work playing around with that tops'l

    • @msf60khz
      @msf60khz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi John
      The gaff rig is very nice for sailing; you can adjust everything and almost play tunes with the sail possibilities. The Gunter is also quite good but the yard is more heavy. The topsail is only used for light conditions, up to F3, so the basic rig is low and small, being ideal for typical UK sea sailng. I have also learned so much about how to handle the gaff sails of a traditional vessel.
