That boat show sets up every year, that Marina is temporary; they put the pilings in in Summer. It's a big thing but actually not cheap to attend for a local. A lot of bling too, but you''re in the opulent South East (even if Southampton might not look it) and there's a lot of money floating around.

The Oyster crew were hilarious. We went to the show on a whim and were pretty much laughed at when we went over and asked if we could go on without a booking. The judgement was real. Little did they know my mother in law is looking to buy something like this but had forgotten to book.
I once met a guy working in scrap metal who went to a garage to get a Mercedes...He felt he was despised and...changed his mind and got himself a Ferrari 😄

There was a filthy looking bloke shoveling dirt and mixing concrete. He said, you moving in? I said, yes did you work on building this? Yes, he said. I own this whole block, and I have 5 others. I saw him later still dirty from labouring, get into his GM Statesman (Same car as the Prime Minister), and drive away. Never underestimate anyone.

The Southhampton Boat Show looks much less motorboat-heavy than the Salone Nautico I visited in Genova at the end of September. Hardly any dinghis in Genova, and most sailing yachts where biggies for the super posh.

Kinda crazy how people from such different backgrounds can get into sailing. I'm happy with an $800 deathtrap I work hard to keep afloat, while others pay millions for a floating hotel room that they probably rarely take out to sea

If by "up north" you mean Sweden/Scandinavia, my guess is the short season and having to haul the boat at winter. Also they are not very practical in the archipelago.
The more the boat is leaning the more horspower your using so to speak, if you want a more vertical sail you reduce the sail area by reefing the sails ( most sails have 3 reefs full sail,half sail,quarter sail) this will slow the boat down though because you lose all the horsepower you were getting while leaning... or you buy a catermaran or tri maran like said above.. and remember sailboats are meant to lean over thats why there sides are shaped the way they are , the more it leans into the water the more water the boat displaces gaining buoyancy, and remember its only leaning hecause the wind is pushing it, if it was pushed completely over the wind goes over the sails and it loses all push from the wind and they instantly stand upright as no force is pushing it over anymore..
The high-end boats do look cool but there's something about the practicality and flexibility of the Pickled Herring that outshines them.

We used to live in the adjustable pipe berths we I used to race on maxis. In rough weather you just fold your self into the wall and pass out.

Is there a way to sail where you don’t have the boat leaning over 45 degrees? If not I’m probably out on sailing.
