I'd say Demons of the Punjab deserves a spot on there. Series 11 had many, many flaws, but that episode was incredible. Really great writing, music, and direction. it does something new with the format of the show.
Guest performances aren't great, but Walsh is award-worthy and Whittaker is very good too.

Midnight is probably my favorite. The fact that we are shown very little is great and I think it really shows how humans can act when scared.
I really enjoy planet of the dead too.
Human nature 2 parter is also my favourite....

The Vasta Nevada episode for me. It had the same pain with Doctor loosing a companion but now worse, having to loose the companion first and then going on the adventures.

Huge agree, one of my favourite lines in the entire show was the scene in the airlock - "what if you went somewhere, i dunno, Pompeii. and you tried to stop it, but in doing so you made it happen. everything i does just makes it happen."
The change from that resignation to the event to having had enough of people dying and going a little power crazed breaking time rules to save people, only to realise he couldn't actually do it in the end and it took a human to be better than him and understand the responsibility. easily plays with some real great elements to the doctor's character and shows how the rest of the show weighs on him, and also involves some of the most interesting time travel/paradox related aspects.

Same here. This two-parter is hands down the best of Who for me (even though several on this list I love as well), and also the first episodes I ever saw long ago when my class decided to randomly watch something on a break lol.
It's not just the story itself, but also the way it deals with audience perspective. First, you are the doctor. In regards to River and the situation, you are lost, curious, and probably have a pretty good/accurate guess as to what's going on and who she is. As the episode reaches its conclusion, you feel the immense pain and loss. It aches, it HURTS.
Then you watch the rest of their story
And then you rewatch these two episodes. Now you are River. Now you have (almost) all the adventures under your belt, all the kisses, all the hellos and goodbyes. Now you, also, must look at a Doctor who does not know her. You, like her, also know that this means the end of it all. And when she gives her speech at her death, its weight is so much heavier than it was the first time.
For an episode(s) to be able to completely re-contextualize itself, and give two paradigms in one go, just masterful to me.

The Zygon Inversion has to be my favorite. Capaldi's war speech is by far the most moving moment of the entire series for me. While in that room, the Doctor somehow goes through all his previous iterations since the Time War. He sets up this game to prove the humans and the zygons aren't so different, something 9 would do. He tries to seem completely charming and in control like 10. When those fail, he falls back on a quick bit of humor to hide his fear like 11. And finally he bursts into rage, not at them but at himself like 12. And they all come together as the same one man, one life experience as he begs them not to press the buttons. The situation is tense, the speech makes me cry everytime I hear it. I just love that episode

    • @APEABOUTSIMS
      @APEABOUTSIMS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Enzophanis1892 To be honest though, both of these episodes have huge gaping plot holes that make no sense.
The doctor constantly saves people that would have been dead had he not gone back in time and saved them, so this once off where it almost causes the end of time seems weird.
Also Gridlock makes no sense either as the Doctors actions at the end could have been done by anyone, including Novice Hame who had been there all along.
Both episodes are built around a specific purpose (Giving Rose more background while introducing Pete so it meant more when he was brought back & closing the Face of Boe mystery and setting up the finale) but the stories around them aren’t logical.

    4) The End of Time (both parts)
    5) The Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon

TheNintendo12 Peter Capaldi’s speech about kindness in The Doctor Falls was far superior. It was less shouty and more quality and emotion. He had a better suit, long styled hair and a balanced persona and a good episode. Zygomatic Inversion was a rubbish episode where he had his worst persona, a hoodie and messy hair and it was loud and shouty, don’t make it good.

Blink was the better weeping angels episode for 3 reasons:
    1. It did some very interesting things with time travel in a show about travelling in time and space
    2. The doctor manages to be a crucial character in the story while talking to people on screens for the most part. If this isn’t a show of how productive you can be while mainly working from home using Microsoft Teams, I don’t know what is
    3. The angels as characters depend on a simple concept that most viewers will grasp, and the way in which they were defeated was clever

Personally, Vincent and the Doctor will always be my favorite episode, even if it's not technically the best. I first watched that episode in the midst of a deep and crippling depression that had reduced my life to hardly more than panic attacks and sleep, but the episode made me feel as though I was not worthless, that even if I couldn't see it now, I could have a huge impact on the world and make incredible things and be loved. Doctor Who in general gave me a lot of hope in a very dark time, which is what I love most about the show. Despite how dark it gets, and it can get incredibly dark, there is a note of happiness, a potential for good, and strength to carry on. The life is a pile of good things and bad things quote is one of my favorite as it was a mantra that broke down my negative thinking and focus on the bad things in life and resignation to them. I was going to use it for my senior quote, but alas, it was too long, so I used the tenth doctor's "In 900 years of time in space, I've never met someone who wasn't important" which I think did the trick too.

I know it sounds weird, and I don’t know how they could have justified otherwise, but I really like that Vincent still commits suicide at the same time exactly as he did. It was the perfect ending to see that while the Doctor and Amy did have an impact on Vincent, they can’t save everyone. It was dark but right, and it didn’t fall prey to some of the other slightly annoying great everyone lives escapes that other episodes did.

Something I find remarkable about The Family of Blood is that even though John Smith is human, he's also decidedly still the Doctor. He's vulnerable, scared, and anxious (things we never get to see the Doctor show), yet when the school is attacked, he leaps into action decisively and to the best of his abilities. When he sees someone about to be crushed, he acts on instinct, throws a cricket ball, and saves them in an utterly ridiculous way. And when the time comes for him to give his life to save others, he does that too.
I'd actually like to see this side of the Doctor return in a proper regeneration. A Doctor that is actually afraid. That doubts himself. That remembers everything he used to be, and is equal parts incredulous that he could be capable of such things, and terrified that he is. All the revival Doctors have a tendency to devolve into a yelling, angry, moralizer. It's tired. I'd like to see a Doctor that reacts with grief instead of anger, because he never is sure if he'll save the day, or what the cost will be.
The above paints this Doctor as a major bummer. But remember how damn endearing John Smith was? Imagine that character getting to show the universe to his companions of choice. How damn wholesome it would be.
Each revival Doctor (except 13, which is why she sucks) has had a fatal flaw. 9 hid his trauma behind anger. 10 hid his guilt behind a smile. 11 was arrogant to a fault. 12 took a while to figure out what he was, but eventually settled on endlessly stubborn. I'd like to see a Doctor whose fatal flaw was that he was afraid. Afraid that he wasn't capable enough, and afraid of what it means about him if he is. I think it would up the tension, which has been lacking a bit the past several seasons.
