    Loving these videos, though I prefer knowing the beers as you're tasting them. For me, it allows me to relate the different descriptors and tasting notes to the beers I've had, versus the focus being on the descriptors and tasting notes themselves, and then needing to rewind to figure out which was about which beer. OR it would be cool to do an "optional" reveal at the beginning and allow viewers to skip if they want to keep the surprise. Just a couple of thoughts!

    When drinking IPAs (especially hazy), perhaps the most important factor I've noticed is how long the beer has been in the can. I will no longer buy a beer without the date on the can as once it gets more than say 8 weeks old, the flavour profile changes so much as to leave the beer unrecognizable. A thought for future video comparisons: comment on the dates on the can - are they all fresh? Supermarket beers can really suffer from this. Also a video idea: Take any good IPA - maybe a Treehouse! - and taste it fresh, after 4 weeks, after 8, after 12, after a year , etc. Or have you already done this?

    • @jdodport
      @jdodport 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I second that motion. Let's see how freshness from a can really affects taste. Excellent idea.

      @MileHighGrowler 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think this is what Nate was touching on at the end. The expectation is that you should be able to grab a sixer/case off the shelf and it drinks as expected. I'm not going through cans or boxes to check dates when I'm buying beer and I (and you) shouldn't have to. But there is 100% a taste difference. We've all had cans we forgot about that got pushed back in the fridge for a few weeks...or months. They're wildly different in many cases from the fresh experience. And that's the same whether it's supermarket or brewery release cans.

    • @JoeWatts1
      @JoeWatts1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Spot on, and I experience this twofold when I brew my own hazys. Hazys have a very tight window too even sitting in the keg purged of oxygen. For me, they peak at about 2 weeks in the keg and then start to diminish. They are very delicate. I've experienced the same beer sometimes AMAZING and other times sometimes underwhelming and very different..so I'm not surprised to experience a lot of quality control issues, especially for craft and small breweries.

    It's funny because even though you addressed all of the troll's "concerns" at the beginning, it will do nothing to dissuade the trolls, because having you respond to them was always their goal. And now having gotten the reward they want, they will only continue to troll to get further validation. The most important rule of the internet is "do not feed the trolls".
    I really appreciate your word on how your daily interaction with fresh beer influences your tasting. Most of us may not even notice the oxidation.

  • @vlchilders
    @vlchilders 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Recommendation: have a fellow afficionado pre-screen the samples to make sure they're each in decent shape, not oxidized, too old, etc. Would be good to always have apples-to-apples comparisons reflecting the "best" version of each sample. I think most watching this channel are always trying to avoid anything but the freshest, cleanest examples of whatever we're drinking--and, like Nate, if we unfortunately stumble upon something oxidized or otherwise past the best of its life we know it right away and it's basically a failed experiment. The best head-to-heads I've done personally have always been comparing across good, clean versions of each beer--that way judgments are made on the merits of the brewer rather than the demerits of the shippers & handlers. Anyway, my 2 cents. Love what you guys are doing both here and, especially, at the brewery!!

    To pile on from a comment in a previous test, it would be great to see the tie-in to Tree House every time. What elements of the beers you like are evidenced in which Tree House beers? What does Tree House do to prevent the things you don't like about a particular beer? If we as consumers really like "Sample B" which Tree House beer might be want to look for?

    Good, Fun video ! Like your IPA review, I like that most/all these beers would be a good choice to just buy a 6 pack and enjoy ! It just comes down to taste and appeal. I still like that I can find some of my favorite beers in a can or a bottle ! I may go to a brewery for something unique or a "one-off". It's great to have choice and great beer at the brewpub or at home. Cans are also great for hiking, especially if close to a stream for cooling the beer ! Drink it, crush it and carry it out. On a hike it's good just to have a beer, not too keen on micro analizing a beer on a hike.

    You absolutely have to check date codes in a supermarket. Grocery stores are not overly concerned about turning inventory in beer aisles. They will keep something on the shelf until it sells, with no real concern of how long. And in deference to Nate, you really should check the dates on your yogurt as well

      I check date codes no matter where I am buying it from, unless it is directly at the brewery. Figure I don't need to there. Prices being asked for beer these days (I am in Canada), if an IPA is 60+days old, I just won't buy it. Prefer within 30days, but that usually doesn't happen unless it is a brewery within the province.

    • @MrClownWorld
      @MrClownWorld 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@viper29ca good rule of thumb is 90 days. Depending on the style, lagers and stouts age extremely well. Heat for beer is much worse than time, if it’s stored cold (always) it’s likely going to taste exactly how the brewery packaged it.

      @viper29ca 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrClownWorld Yeah, that is just my rule for IPA, Pale Ale, anything hoppy. Prices up here are running $5 and up for a 500ml can of IPA. If I am paying that much, it had better be relativity fresh.

    For the can/glass - I tend to at-least take one sip from the can for the extra carbonated flavor variation, the pour. I'd argue the glass for sure for a smoother experience. Pour moderately aggressive too, the head needs to release to allow the true flavor profile to shine. For either an IPA or Hazy IPA, pouring with a head that takes up 1/3 of the glass is about right. It should be very puffy marshmellowy on the top sticking out above the rim as you pour the remainder of the can, then it settles down in a few seconds.

It might have been good to do both can and glass on all? But you don't know which glass belongs to which can and you have to try to match them up. I don't know if I'm explaining the concept very well, but it would really highlight how different a beer can present from the can and after being poured. You could put a mark on the bottom of each can and glass to keep track of which is which.

      I think they've found their business model and it works well for them. People line up at each brewery location to buy all the beer they can produce. They don't distribute to stores because they don't need to. I live one state away and I have to drive there to get it, so I can't see it ever being available in CA. Maybe find a beer buddy in MA and you can ship him something interesting that's local to you in return for him shipping you some TH.

      @@61hink people don’t need to lineup like they did pre-COVID. They now produce enough that you can get in and out without an issue for the most part. I think the bigger issue is they do everything to ensure their beer is the freshest and best it can be. It never gets warm or is exposed to poor handling. They don’t want some dope to place their beer on a shelf unrefrigerated. I see good hoppy beers sitting on a shelf in the stores now and I cringe and I refuse to buy it. If you watch their early brewery tour videos they go over all the painstaking love, care, detail that goes into their beer and they don’t want someone ruining their hard work.

The idea that our style of beer has an aggressive drop off after a certain length of time is not our experience at all and most folks here blindly prefer it blindly between 4-12 weeks

    Don't you serve your hazys in clear glass pint glasses at your spots? I hear you on the uv exposure, but how you square that? Real question, should you serve your IPAs on draft at all? Can't wait for that vid you teased at the end.

    RE: Sun Struck - how long does it take. I've heard opinions that it won't affect a beer in the time it takes to drink it. Maybe an idea for a video - blind tasting with a couple beers with ( 10 - 15 min) sun exposure/without? You'd have to keep them at the same temperature.

    Do you differentiate between a NEIPA and a Hazy IPA? In my opinion, a NEIPA brings the creamy mouthfeel (fluffiness) as you called it. Whereas a Hazy IPA is just a ‘hazy’ IPA with maybe some tropical fruit notes.

      I think they get forgotten because they've been around so long. I know when I was doing brewing competitions 12-15 years ago, SN's pale was the "control" sample for that style. Any time I grab it I'm also impressed again, and wonder why it's so long between buying a case. Just so many beers to try and it's easy to forget the old standby, even if it's the exact definition of the style.

    ive newly come over to the ipa world (i try not to discriminate) and so far hazy ipa is my favorite style. im not a big fan at all of west coast ipas.
    i tried the deschutes from last video and it was ok. i liked the flavors but the bitterness was a killer for me.
    ill keep and eye out for the sierra nevada brew, i like other styles from them so theyre probably a nice pick

    Date code can also be frustrating as a consumer in that you often see no date, “best by” date (by whose standard?) or a packaged on date. I feel packaged on date should be universal. I’ve often seen hazy IPAs with best by dates 6 months out.

  • @FrankGenoBruno

    I appreciate your insights on supermarket hazy IPAs and the glass vs. can debate. Two comments:
    1. You mentioned that pouring beer in a glass can cause light strike, affecting the flavor. While it's true that light can impact beer quality, it's interesting to note that most beer has been poured into glasses for the last hundred years. If glass is such a detriment, why does Treehouse sell glasses? It seems like there's a balance to be struck between tradition and innovation.
    2. I respect your stance on not favoring any brewery and being objective in your reviews. It's clear you have a refined palate and are sensitive to oxidation, which is crucial for enjoying fresh beer. However, for those of us who don't live near one of the five Treehouse locations and can't frequently visit, not to mention can’t purchase your beers…how should we navigate our beer choices? Any tips for enjoying supermarket IPAs or other accessible options would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for the honest review and for sharing your passion for great beer!

      For an unsolicited reply on #2, as a craft beer fan, just visit your local brewery. These days you can barely throw a rock and not hit two. Although very few reach the level of Tree House there are plenty of good local breweries out there to purchase fresh beer. They could also use the support like a lot of small local businesses out there.

Feel free to give us home brewers pointers on how you’d construct a session IPA that doesn’t have a thin body or muted flavor profile 😎

    [All of this was written before watching reveal, just off of which were shown initially] Sierra Nevada hazy is a really good beer for mass market. Voodoo ranger decent, just sometimes a little cloying and muted. Next for me would be oskar blues, it's fine but it wouldn't be my first choice. And early on I used to like sixpoint but meh, really really not a fan anymore.

    I've both critiqued and complimented videos from this channel a lot over the last year. This one falls into a similar bracket as other critiques I've had, especially the German Lager one. If you read the comments, it's pretty clear most people don't know what you mean by "cardboard" and "oxidative." And/or they don't understand the impact of freshness on a beer. The rant at the end is fine, defensible, but it is essentially acknowledging the issue. Depending on where you are, what store you go to, and how popular the beer you're buying is, it will dramatically change the outcome of a taste test like this. Or put another way, you're really only rating your lottery pick of how fresh the beer you bought that particular day and from that particular store was. It's close to pointless. I've seen your beer sitting on the shelves of small beer store near Atlanta at room temp, well over 6 months old. Would it be fair for me to get on TH-cam and "rate" it. I just don't think so. I've had Treehouse beer fresh, it is absolutely phenomenal. World class beer. I've had those German lagers fresh from the brewery as well. World class lager.

    Dude... your drink from a can, when you have a teku glass... in your hand! You are also in the shade! No sunlight will effect your beer, in the time you pour it and taste it... also drinking from a can means you are getting the wrost experience as far as volatile aromas

    That was fun! I liked the revel at the end where we all found out at the same time. As far as the date codes go I’d say it’s more like grabbing the freshest gallon of milk… you’re not going to drive all around town to find the “freshest” but I will grab the one that has the best date. And I’d imagine any craft beer drinker might be doing the same thing Just a thought….

  • @jacobouellette4430
    @jacobouellette4430 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I get what you are saying in regards to like when you buy like yogurt at the supermarket, but say a company like Hood, isnt going to go around to every supermarket to make sure everything on the shelf is properly dated, thats on the store to pull product when its out dated and also to be ordering based upon how quickly the turnover rate is for the yogurt, as to always maintain the freshest quality possible. So how can you blame a brewery for a supermarkets lack of ability make sure the beer section is properly dated as well the lack of caring because in theory beer never really "goes bad" like you could get seriously ill from it. Might taste bad, but thats about as far as it gets. I guess they could hold the supermarkets to a higher standard to their product, but im not sure how feasible that actually is.
