I kind of started my craft beer drinking with Stone IPA, I don't drink IPAs as often as I did back then but I guess I fried my tastebuds, I don't think it's overly bitter. Wonder how I'd do on a blind tasting.

Reading some of the comments and reflecting on my own experience, it brings to mind how much of our enjoyment comes from things beyond the raw taste, aroma, and look of the beer. For years, the only way I got Jai Alai was on my trips down to Florida. It was always special, and I rated it very highly, recommending it to everyone. Now that I can get it down the street any time I want, it's "just another IPA". But I'd probably still grab it immediately if I was in Tampa.....
I’ve consumed all 5 of these many times. I started out with bitter, drier ipas before there were any of the hazy beers. In the past, many of the hop varieties weren’t available that are being used now, they hadn’t been developed yet. If that doesn’t make sense to you, it’s like a variety of apple that hadn’t been invented yet. Everyone says Honeycrisp apples are awesome, they are a hybrid, a newer thing. Same thing with all these amazing hops they use in these beers. It was actually why I liked the style. I like bitter/sour stuff and it was easy for me to get into it. I remember when I first tried Stone IPA, that was actually one of the less bitter/astringent examples of an IPA I had tried to that point. The hop character was totally different than what I was used to. It’s weird, as I just can’t see stone ipa coming across as the most bitter of these 5, but maybe it’s different out of the can. Of these 5, I’d have Jai Alai as my easy favorite, with my second favorite Fresh Squeezed, and Goose Island at the bottom. The Jai Alai must have been old. Jai Alai is a great beer. I’m so surprised Goose Island finished number one. I’ve never had it out of a can. Must be SO much better out of a can than it is out of a bottle. Or it was the freshest of the 5 or something. It’s weird for the head brewer of Treehouse to be doing this because you are looking at THE guy, if you don’t already know. This is the main person responsible for brewing the highest rated beers in existence among people into craft beer enough to rate them. Hes basically making the best commercially sold beer that has ever produced. It’s kind of amazing to see him talk about other breweries beers but when he disagrees with my opinions I question myself lol.
Love Fresh Squeezed but on east coast, really hard to get fresh and that beer does not last past a month from can date. Love Goose Island from the can actually, is one of my go tos.

Great video Nate! I might have to pick up some old school ipa after watching this one! We need 12pks of julius, green and haze in supermarkets! I can see the orange, green and purple cases now. Honorable mention… fiddlehead second fiddle ipa. The 12pks are always fantastic. Great price at $19.99 here in Albany. Can get them 8 days old sometimes! I Can’t wait for Saratoga. If you need a local label supplier, I work for a large employee owned printing company. Nextgen label, which is about 20 mins south of your Saratoga location. I’m sure I speak for the whole company when I say we would love your business! Several of us at work love your beer and are looking forward to saratoga opening!
Lagunitas was my go-to when I was a broke boy. Hard to beat them for value/flavor back in 2006 for $18 a 24 pack Fresh squeezed is my favorite of this bunch. Jai Alai can be great but it comes down to how well it's been handled and how long it's sat on a warm shelf.
I’m glad Nate is doing these cause it gives me more confidence in my own palate. I wonder if these taste tests would be a little better if you spaced out the tastings slightly or cleansed your palate between sips. Otherwise I feel like the sequence might impact how one tastes compared to the one before. Think the best example is that the Stone seemed to impact how the next one tasted, simply because it was so bitter.
No surprise Goose Island wins. I really loved Jai Alai in college because it was so hard to find in Phoenix for the longest time -- and thought the name and cans were cool. It's kind of nice that, nowadays, you can get a tallboy Lagunitas even when you're somewhere as mundane as a movie theater chain. Here in LA, where I live now, the choice seems to always be: Lagunitas in a tallboy can, Stone IPA in a tallboy can, or 805 Blonde Ale off the tap (if you want a 24oz draft beer). Wish crisp/dry lagers and pilsners from some of these larger craft breweries would enter those spaces. But until then, if you don't want an ale,or a less than stellar juicy ipa, then a standard canned IPA it is if you're looking for something dry.
oh dang I feel like I just commented on a video from a few months ago asking for this - and you delivered! I actually do have all of these in my grocery store too

Would love a blind taste test or Triangle test of Treehouse beers, Same batch, but one stays cold and another gets warm for a period of time to simulate the can traveling across the country. I feel a lot of people experience your beers via a friend that shipped them, me included, I wonder if there is a noticeable flavor change... In the summer months traveling across the desert... I feel your beer holds up, but could be a cool experiment to consider... also maybe a even better reason to Travel to the brewery to get it from the source.... Sköl!
He didn't like that goose island was his number one and blamed it getting hit by sunlight.. Once he grabbed the goose can he was like I gotta make this right lol
Honestly this is a hugely important test. You should do the same thing with your own beers. See how the sunlight affects Julius or Hazy. I clearly thought the warmth would affect everything, but not the sunlight... It's crazy. This is why you gotta respect beers like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Torpedo IPA that stay great even in a bottle...
Agreed...Stone is so bitter, but have some great memories of stone's "Tap takeovers" in the springfield, MA area, . Have never had Deschutes.... and LAUGHED OUT LOUD at the "Office Space" cut.
Interesting video. I would have no issues drinking most of these beers, but for Lagunita, I would pick one of their "Somethin' or Little somethin' wild" series. Great stuff. Keep 'em coming! Thanks.
I thought you said sunlight won’t make it tastes better…so really questioning how Goose went from 1 to 5. Maybe just better out of a glass to get the full profile instead of a can? I highly prefer drinking out of a glass. Knocks down the carbonation and provides a better smelling experience.
For real though. Homie got upset he picked Goose first so redid it, felt the weight of the larger can, and ranked it last. Craft beer nerds and brewers have been recommending drinking out of glass (specifically their beloved Tekus) rather than cans to get the full aromas and flavours for years. I thought the obsession with shitting on large, successful brews bought out by big corps was over, but it looks like it's still a thing in the craft beer scene. Yawn.
Yeah man! I loved this video! As a beer salesman, seeing the attitude for canned beer change has been interesting. Totally makes sense that it would taste better. But, it’s lighter in weight and probably cheaper for the brewery. So, does canned beer taste better than well cared for bottled beer? 😉
It's interesting that in both tastings the beer immediately after Stone won. I wonder if tasting something bitter makes whatever comes after it taste better?
It totally depends on where you are. For example, I have never even heard of Deschutes. I had a Jai Alai in Massachusetts once. It is nowhere to be found in the part of Texas I am in, nor in upstate Michigan. Have you had a McConaugh Haze? It rocks...it is in every store here, gas station or otherwise. But I bet it isn't even in all of Texas.
Or WA state ... Get your lawyers on that to file the paperwork to export to .... States ! ... Covid rules or Prohibition repealed rules ... it's like exporting to a different country ! 🤪
Im lucky enough to live near vt (upstate ny) and my grocery store ipa is Fiddlehead. I enjoy Treehouse but its rare up here. My fav local breweries would be Foam, Fiddlehead, 14th Star, Frost, Foley bros. I do consider myself lucky to be so near so many phenomenal breweries.
Lagunitas IPA that is fresh still holds up with any new style IPA IMO its so freaking good. After the video I might have to revisit Goose Island IPA lol
Oktoberfest season! Spaten, Hofbrau, Weihenstephan, Warsteiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr. Then you can flip to the American made Oktoberfest beers. Keep up the good work!
Small constructive criticism is to perhaps label the samples as A B and C etc instead of numbers since you’re already using numbers to rank them so it won’t be as confusing to say or hear. It doesn’t matter really just a nit pick. Quality content as usual :)
Wish you had included one from Sierra Nevada (hazy little thing etc) just to complete the supermarket competitors. Not sure it would have changed the outcome…
i live in CT and make the drive to CHarlton for THE BEST ipas once every month or so..but locally i have 3 -4 good breweries near me in southern CT that make some dam good ones to....NEBCO, COunterweight, Thomas Hooker to name a few you can grab in most markets
for the 2nd pass next time, you should have him turn around and then switch them up next time! maybe going in the same order you'll get some remaining flavours?? idk?? could be a good change
I would be curious as to the dates on the IPAs. Ever since Monster took over CCB it's rare to find Jai Alai anywhere (even at the brewery) less than 2 months old. Publix recently ran Lagunitas BOGO so I stocked up on the regular and Sumpin' Sumpin'
I remember when I first moved to Tampa in 2013 and could get Jai Alai and old school Tocobaga that was canned within the week at Publix. In those days I wouldn't buy Jai Alai that was more than a week old

Yawn.
I love goose.
And it’s super cheap.
Even in Canada!!!
It does make me cough a lot though. Like almost uncontrollably. 🤷♂️
that was a great tasting video Cheers
Yeah man! I loved this video! As a beer salesman, seeing the attitude for canned beer change has been interesting. Totally makes sense that it would taste better. But, it’s lighter in weight and probably cheaper for the brewery. So, does canned beer taste better than well cared for bottled beer? 😉
Had a Goose island recently and it was a malt bomb. Stone is aggressive. lagunitas is my go to shelf IPA if I'm forced.
Stone was my first IPA back when I was in college. I hated it but then wanted another
NA beer tasting would be dope on this channel. Tree house NA beer would be dope too.
They have an NA video. But I don’t think they included Athletic, which I’d love to see
How is Sierra Nevada Hazy not in this? It’s an amazing IPA for wherever you find it
It’s a comparison of west coast IPAs.
This took me back...please do more classics of all styles. Gave me BBA vibes. Remember those silly original guys? 😂🍺
To me the lagunitas is the most drinkable ipa on the panel. It’s great for fishing and cookouts.
It's interesting that in both tastings the beer immediately after Stone won. I wonder if tasting something bitter makes whatever comes after it taste better?
I've been drinking Lagunitas for a little while. I really want to try Jai Alai.
Needed a can of Two Hearted in this one.
I wish I could find Tree House in Metairie, Louisiana!
Or WA state ... Get your lawyers on that to file the paperwork to export to .... States ! ... Covid rules or Prohibition repealed rules ... it's like exporting to a different country ! 🤪
You got Abita in your backyard, and with spring water!
In Canada there is mass produced IPA called Alexander Keith’s. It’s not a real IPA but It’s really good. Give it a try if you ever get a chance.
Lagunitas IPA that is fresh still holds up with any new style IPA IMO its so freaking good. After the video I might have to revisit Goose Island IPA lol
The OG Ballard Bitter from the '80's
Ha, my rankings are the exact reverse. Love the videos though
Got to try pernicious and hazy lil thang next round!
I have a stovepipe can of perni in the fridge, hoping Nate will take it from me and a few others.
I’m in Nebraska wishing I could try some Orange Julius. 😢
Two Hearted and Torpedo definitely should've been on this list. The latter is a classic and the former is just crushable (for its ABV).
Oktoberfest season! Spaten, Hofbrau, Weihenstephan, Warsteiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr. Then you can flip to the American made Oktoberfest beers. Keep up the good work!
That was my order without blinding. Nice
Not sure it would have changed the outcome…
when I buy beer at the super market, I choose the freshest beer I can find. no dating, I won't buy it.
i live in CT and make the drive to CHarlton for THE BEST ipas once every month or so..but locally i have 3 -4 good breweries near me in southern CT that make some dam good ones to....NEBCO, COunterweight, Thomas Hooker to name a few you can grab in most markets
Jai Alai for me.
I wish southern tier brewing's ipa would have been on there.
Seeing how you ranked them in the can is about how I expected the order to go in the first place
👍🏻👍🏻
for the 2nd pass next time, you should have him turn around and then switch them up next time! maybe going in the same order you'll get some remaining flavours?? idk?? could be a good change
Fresh Squeezed is my grocery go to.
🏔️
I agree thar beer from a can tastes better, but I always pour into a glass if I can. I really think it makes it better. My humble opinion.
This was a bit circumstantial- the beer sat in the glasses longer than we would have liked.
In those days I wouldn't buy Jai Alai that was more than a week old
Afternoon Nate.
I ranked them exactly as you did.
I wish I could get treehouse beers in store so bad, I love this company but living in Florida, I’ve never had their beers and I want to so bad
