I so relate to the last thing said about small talk, when he said "I learned to say..." That's the biggest thing I've found being a female who (likely) has mild autism... I can function normally. But all the things that come naturally to everyone else are things I've learned. I learned how to do small talk. I learned how to interact. So there's always a certain level of social anxiety/stress there, because my social skills aren't as autonomous as they are for everyone else. They require just that tiny bit more thought, and the pressure of having to put that thought into it produces the social anxiety I feel.

I relate to all you say about learning to small talk. A thing that bugs me about the way general people just chat on and on about themselves or totally vacuous stuff and you just have to pretend you’re interested to be polite. So tedious!

    • @Ducttaper4JC2
      @Ducttaper4JC2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's not even that I find it tedious (Although sometimes that's the case) but it's like... you know how a lot of grandparents are slower and not as smooth with technology compared to a teenager who has grown up doing it? I'm like that with small talk. Slower, haltering, because I had to learn it later in life instead of picking it up naturally. 0

The expectation to small talk with strangers is INCREDIBLY cultural as well. I am Icelandic, and it is very common for foreigners (especially Americans, in my experience) to say that they find it odd (or rude/uncomfortable) how Icelanders don't talk to strangers. If two Icelanders who don't know each other sit next to each other at a bus stop, they would rather stare into the distance than say anything (though probably they'd just be on their smartphones nowadays). Nobody really sees any reason to talk to strangers & people find it unusual when American tourists start talking to them out of nowhere. Small talk still exists, but it's something that happens between vague acquaintances (distant relatives, someone you went to primary school with, friend of a friend etc) rather than strangers. I still struggle with what limited small talk we do have though, when I have something to say I can talk your ear off but when I don't have anything to say I'd rather not say anything at all.

Can i just say THANK YOU for the bit about ND’s and NT’s compromising and working together! ❤️ I totally agree. As an autistic I know I do my best to try to meet my NT peers halfway and I almost always get a positive response. It’s frustrating to see other autistics with the attitude, “this is me and I don’t have to change.” That’s just arrogant and doesn’t get us anywhere. We ALL have to consider others in our interactions.

Hi! I’m a girl dating a boy with autism. I’ve known him for about 1.5 years, and i learn more and more each day. I am often googling and doing research from time to time to understand even more. Going to be honest and say it’s difficult from time to time, but that is also why i put so much effort to understand. I would really appreciate you making a video about relationships, and maybe your girlfriend also have som tips?

This is really good stuff, and helpful to me, as a 39 year old adult who's only now realising I'm probably on the spectrum. I just thought all this time I was just a really rubbish person, but actually seeing aspies on various youtube channels talking about their experiences, it's so familiar. All the stuff about school, and friends, and small talk, and obsessive interests, and being utterly unable to engage with things that I'm not interested in- it's exactly how I've been the whole time. I wish I'd known earlier, instead of spending my entire adult life unable to hold down a job or make friends with people and feeling like a failure because of it. I'm going to get a diagnosis.

WOW! I mean … WOW! I was first diagnosed by doctors and child psychiatrists as 'hyperactive' when I was six … which is now known as ADHD and was diagnosed with ASD/Aspergers much, much, much later. I soooo... relate to both of you and your experiences, especially when it came to 'small talk', also about difficulties connecting socially unless they were into what I was/am into and how my ADHD affects me in lots of ways! Oh, and I love Jess' doggy, too, Dan! Peace and All Good.

Small talk- where I work I have to spent time in cars with my coworkers and it’s great when they start conversations and ask me about stuff so that the conversation can actually go somewhere because I do enjoy talking to them, but I’m SO bad at thinking of things to talk about with them and there are times when we sit in silence for 20+ minutes because I can’t think of any way to start a conversation

OMG! So amazing! My two favourite TH-cam influencers in one video 🙂🙂🙂. I was diagnosed with ADHD in my mid 20s and now with going through the process of getting a diagnosis for my daughter of Aspergers I will be seeking a diagnosis for myself because I just tick too many of the boxes to ignore. I have found both of you so helpful in reminding myself that my challenges are real. That it's a part of who I am... I am dealing with extra challenges not just lazy, antisocial, weird, stupid all the negative self talk that tends to hammer you when you are totally confused about not reacting in a neuro-typical way to life.

I have a friend named Jess, and the Jess in the video, looks as though that's somebody else who I would want to be my friend, love her top 💓, and her energy is good, just like yours:), and so positive.
Worst small talk ever I've experienced plenty of times
    Me- "Hi, how you going"
    them- "Good thanks"
    Me- "That's great to hear"
them- "And how are you going"
    Me- "I'm good thank you"
    them- "Good"
Sometimes I may even throw in the occasional "Yeah", then the convo just ends there ugh that's never fun, but I love asking others how they are, checking in that sort of thing 😊❤💙

That's how I have crashes too! Its so odd and I cant understand it. When i'm keeping busy I'm ok, I keep myself so busy that there comes a point where I need a day off.. and on that day off I end up having a kind of meltdown/shutdown because I feel so lost, depressed and directionless. Half a day off is all my mind can manage, but I also cant work full time cause I burn out. The balance seems impossible!

I feel you on so much of this. I came over from Jess's channel and I really enjoyed the video! I have the opposite problem with small talk where someone will say something like "how was your weekend?" and 10 minutes later I see the panic in their eyes that means "I was expecting 'good, you?' and I got a monologue".

I relate so much with what you said when talking about crashing. When I learned about How to ADHD I got super productive because I was using lists and a BuJo and I had things to do, but as soon as I finished my list of things I couldn't get started on anything else because I crashed like you. And this happens whenever I finish a video. I can resonate with on so many levels. I have always struggled with (live) communication, even among friends and family. Relationships generally didn't last, including my marriage. Sometimes I struggle to have a conversation with my son and I hate that because I don't get to see him often. He lives in another state and although I could visit him, I feel uncomfortable about visiting alone because I just feel like it would be awkward. I can't connect with his significant other either. I have gone with my niece to visit a couple of times but I don't think she really wanted to do it. I think she did it FOR me but we aren't so close anymore, so I don't know when I will visit him again.

I struggle with eye contact (one of the reasons I'm starting to suspect I might have mild autism, along with crippling social anxiety and sensory issues) and I learned that I can't handle looking people in the eye but I can stare at their lips without a problem. It helps me understand what people are saying and no one seems to notice I'm not making eye contact because I'm still looking at their face.

  • @Lliryht

Very interesting video. The small talk part is so true haha. I am always awkward when someone starts talking to me. :D Except when I am with my horse in the riding stable - but I guess this is because of the people there - they will talk about horses and horse stuff all the time and because horses are my special interest since I was a little girl, this is something I can talk about for hours... :)
But even if I wouldn't talk to them - they're not mad or offended. We've got a girl with selective mutism (and probably also ASD, but it isn't diagnosed yet) and still, everyone says hello to her and is accepting her the way she is. It's great there. Probably the only place on earth where I meet a lot of people that I am comfortable with. ^^
And I think it's good to learn new stuff that you actually don't like that much. I am a wreck when it comes to phone calls but due to my full time job as a media designer I need to call people. My boss always pushes me to do things I am afraid of. And what should I say.. it works. I am less afraid of calling customers or talking on the phone in general. :D That's a huge achievement for me.

P.S. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS AT AN ASSESSMENT. EVERYTHING I CAN FIND ONLINE IS REALLY VAUGE!

The problem with the "meet in the middle" philosophy expressed at 11:19 is that NT's seem to think "the middle" is their front porch, when we live a whole mile away.

My son was not diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome until he was in his teens. I did not know that there was such a thing as Asperger's I knew something is definitely different about him but he has such a big heart and as such a wonderful person I just didn't think it was Asperger's I just didn't know about it. I wish I had because I would have sought help for that. Even though he was seeing a psychiatrist and saw him for many years Asperger's never was thought of. Then later on in life his father had him tested not for Ashburn Ice but just in general tested and he has ADHD and Asperger's. I have ADHD and I am dyslexic. So I don't know if it is coming from my jeans probably it is but I just never knew about Asperger's and I feel really horrible that he didn't receive what he needed. He was teased at school. Ostracized by the teachers. And I tried to do everything I could do to help them I just wish he could have had the right help sooner. He's now in his early twenties and is okay but I just don't know if the Asperger's is being addressed he is such a great person and I love them with all my heart..

I wonder if ADHD and Autism are connected. Both my husband and myself are ADHD (different subtypes) we both scored lowish (19) on the AQ test. Our son is diagnosed mild/moderate Autistic. It seems like his Autism almost is a mix of my husband's quirks and mine. Granted my husband also has OCD like (sub-clinical?) qualities and generalized anxiety disorder.

Do you have this issue where you type/say stuff without thinking, and quickly regret what you said moments later when you re-read your own comment?

Yes, yes we are. We neurodiverse see the world in a way that makes sense to us and when we share our view via art, you tube videos, music and poetry we blow neurotypical people away because we enrich all our worlds. Like music. I believe there is space on our planet for all ways of living. These videos are wonderful ways of showing everyone how amazing people are. Glad you are there.
