  • Vladimir Morkov (1801-1864) was a Russian guitarist known for his contributions to the development of the instrument and its pedagogy. Born in St. Petersburg, Morkov studied guitar under the guidance of Andrei Sichrow (Sychra), a renowned virtuoso and composer, who dedicated his teachings to him. Morkov's dedication to the guitar led him to author the "Full School for Seven-String Guitars" in 1862, a significant work that aimed to address the evolving demands of guitar music and technique.
Throughout his life, Morkov composed numerous original pieces and transcriptions for the guitar, showcasing his mastery of the instrument and his deep understanding of its capabilities. He also contributed to the documentation of Russian opera history with his work "Historical Sketch of Russian Opera from its Beginning to 1862."
Morkov's legacy lies not only in his compositions but also in his efforts to advance guitar education. His practical experience of over thirty years served as the foundation for his teachings, offering valuable insights into proper technique and musical expression. Today, Vladimir Morkov is remembered as a pioneering figure in the world of Russian guitar, leaving behind a lasting impact on both performers and enthusiasts of the instrument.
In the preface to his school, he wrote: "Of all the currently published by schools for seven-string guitars, best and most affordable to students of this tool should be on all the rights to name a theoretical and hands-on school, composed about twenty-five years ago, by the famous once a virtuoso and composer Andrei Osipovich Sichrow. Nearly all more or less well-known in Russia guitarists owe this school of music his education, but despite its many undeniable advantages, but the same can not be inherent does not agree with that at our contemporary requirements guitar music and considerable recent perfecting of the tool, it is now far from adequate. This reason has prompted me to compose a new school, with detailed treatment of rules necessary for the gradual development of the mechanism on the right and left hands and general guitar playing. When presenting examples of the correct distribution and finger permutation , I have followed the methods taken by me at Sichrow SA, which was seen for many years was a leader in my music. I dare to hope that my work is based on thirty years of practical experience, bringing guitar fans some benefit".
