Dude I love this game. I actually found a pretty insane glitch that's fun to mess around with. I played the app, so I'm not sure if it works on the computer version, but anyway: i found a spot on the coast that looks like regular water, but it's solid, letting you get out of bounds. I think it was on the duck island. Once you're out of bounds, you can walk on everything you normally couldn't: houses, cliff faces, trees, water... basically a walk-through-walls glitch. You soon realize that all the tiles are connected - for example all the caves are actually adjacent to one another, letting you essentially teleport around the map. It's really cool to see how the game was laid out like that. And if you look around enough you'll find some easter eggs & unused content that isn't accessible via normal gameplay. That blew my mind as a kid!
that's the hardness glitch, it's actually pretty well known and a trick speedrunners use. there's a fan made version of the game with achievements, one of the achievements is finding the hardness glitch.
I beat this game as a child and loved it. I had little access to PC games, so finding a game that's free, and this good, was magical at the time. I had been trying to remember the name of this game for years, and then I saw the thumbnail. Maybe it didn't age well, but now I can play to see for myself. THANK YOU
This is the type of game I fully expected to hear was the first game made by some legend of the gaming industry. Somehow, the fact that it wasn't just makes it all the more frightning.
IF you're of a certain age you played this as it was free. In 97 it was on cover discs and cover discs were the only place to get this stuff unless you had an uber expensive Modem.
I randomly found Dink Smallwood on some random site, and played it, and absolutely loved it more than I thought I would. I'm glad there's a huge modding community behind it, and I'm surprised it's still as good as I remember.
Ah my nostalgia as a kid in the late 90's, finding this game and just ... was a fever dream I never truly escaped as it occasionally haunts my dreams. xD
Love seeing all sorts of niche titles from your videos! I'd love to see you review Inquisitor in this series if you don't already have it on your list!
OMG! I have been actively searching for the game Dink Smallwood for at least 10 years. I completely gave up on it because the only memory I have is the grandmom asking you something and the house catching fire and a worm blocking the road. I think I played the demo 25+ years ago. I cannot belie I randomly clicked on this video out of boredom and boom: there it is! You made my year lol. edit: I don't know your channel or whether I will like it or not, but you got an instant like+subscibe :) thx again!
I've never played (or until this video, heard of) Dink Smallwood but I am very familiar with Legend of the Red Dragon, which was also produced by Seth Robinson. It was a text based game that I played a lot of in 4th grade because it was available via the local internet in my tiny town. It was pretty fun at the time and I have fond memories of fighting the other kids in the neighborhood virtually. 1994 was a weird time.
Hehe, I remember playing the demo of Dink when it had just come out. Took me months of looking to find a boxed copy, but I still have and treasure that bad boy 😊
For anyone who used to enjoy BBSs back in the day, this game was made by the developer of LORD. And the lesser known LORD 2 could be considered the predecessor of Dink Smallwood as it was kinda an “arpg” that used ANSI for the graphics. And was multiplayer too. Way ahead of its time.
Just crushed the entire series this afternoon. Truly tremendous. Consistent voice. Unapologetically yourself the whole time. I LOL'd to myself many times. And that fuckin Outro Theme Song abso-fuckin-lutely slaps thigh. A real dong-hanger of a song. GG and looking forward to the continued journey. Toodles 🤙🏻

Another absolute banger of a classic ARPG is Nox. It's probably on your to play list already, but darn does it bring good memories. If I recall correctly, it's the first ARPG with a hook ability, which pulls enemies towards you
The game's free on GOG. Can't beat the price of free, even if it's Dink Smallwood. Worth a play just for the novelty of it alone. Excellent video btw, you're a great wordsmith and orator, subscribed.
Man i remember being a kid and playing this game. its funnily enough one of the games i have the most hours on, simply because of the DMods, which are countless. Some of them are actually amazing, and really fun to play though. At least when i was 12.

Back when all you had was a box to read and some picture and you had to risk your money lol. At least you'd get a whole damn booklet with these things that was cool as hell.
Seer, you should try out another ARPG that came out in 1987 (Amiga) and 1989 (MS-DOS) named The Faery Tale Adventure. I'm sure it's horrible, but I remember enjoying it back as a kid. You may have to track down an Amiga ROM and emulator, though. There is a browser based version over at Free Game Empire, but I'm not sure how well it plays in the browser. Just don't blame me if the music drives you insane. Anyway, keep up the good work!
3:21 To be fair, both Diablo 1 and 2 are "just a bunch of tiles" ...... but like, much smaller ones, character step size, instead of screen. I'm very well liked at parties. Also, Darkstone, Divine Divinity, and Nox. Older, but they deserve a look much more than Dink. Also Victor Vran for a newer highly underrated one.
