The classic :') random tidbit; I actually used to spam the spacebar until this comment showed up on every screen during the entire pre-boots section since it's such a boring part, but then it unfortunately turned out that the more text that is shown in one session will make the game progressively more laggy on any of the pre-HD releases if you're playing on W7 or higher. For a while I was even restarting the game just before the Seth fight to get rid of the lag which does make it significantly easier, and I tried multi-booting WinXP just to run Dink more optimally, but that installer ended up ruining the MBR on that disk and I still haven't recovered all the files..
@@ocircles738 Wow, such efforts for such a small "easter egg"! 😲 Too bad you couldn't do it in the end. But at least you could look behind the game a bit, I wonder why the texts make the game lag a lot. Thanks for the "behind the scenes" comment! 😀
Damn, amazing run. I've recently played this childhood game, and was interested if there is any speedruns, and how fast they can destroy the game ^^ turns out pretty fast, great execution.
this is awesome!!! why do you leave that one mega potion on that island? (duck island? i forgot), I would totally watch a video with full commentary on top of this run to explain why you do what you did like leave certain things, how you clip, why you kill certain monsters etc
Thank you! That mega potion gets left behind simply because you can't grab that one from the outside, it's really close but not quite close enough :( Could potentially save a decent chunk of time if it were possible since you might be able to skip KernSin potions (you'd still need to find a +1 strength somewhere though for the Seth fight) Also you're right, that is normally accessed via Duck Island! A commentary video might be cool, I'm normally very lazy with these kinds of things but I think for this game in particular where I put a lot of time into routing it might be a good idea to record something like that for posterity..? I'll try and find it in myself to put something together!
I wonder if there'd be a way to kill Seth even faster if you get hellfire, and bait him into a pattern where he walks along with the fireball. It does some absolute grotesque damage even if it doesn't necessarily oneshot like the fire bow critical can.
As far as I remember, all the spells were too weak at this point due to low magic level? Idk, definitely did test the spells but there was some issue with it, can't remember what it was exactly though. I can say for sure though that there really isn't a lot of quick stats to get besides the stuff I already pick up in this run
I'm pretty sure magic damage never changes, only how fast it recharges, and your chance of resisting the casts from dragons and Seth. That's main reason the acid rain remains trash outside of normal play when trying to farm the big green slow enemies, kiting them around the "rain" It could honestly just be Seth being such a spaz that lining up a good hellfire is way too luck dependent. Kinda like tryna use a bow, since pulling to max power takes so long
@@Ghostly_One1 Hmm.. Well it is predictable to a degree: Seth likes to walk along the edges, and while there is a chance that he'll just randomly turn halfway through somewhere, he will usually go the full length like 70% of the time. So you could in theory line up at a corner, and just as he comes there you just full-send a hellfire towards the direction he'd be walking on one of the long edges.. Don't you need some certain MLevel to buy the hellfire spell though? I've forgotten so much haha
I'm not 100% cause I haven't touched Dink in like a decade, but I'm like 90% sure that its only the 1500 gold for that dude in the cave below the golems to teach it to you. Only hard stat requirements there are in the game, I think, is the was it 4 or 5 attack to move that first boss caves boulder, the 5 or whatever magic for acid rain, and that's it.
Hahah yeah the game is pretty broken on v1.02-1.07. I accidentally did a REALLY weird out of bounds when I was a kid that I'm pretty sure only existed in the demo (it would warp you to the completely wrong map tile when you ran around north of the castle) and that's what made me want to try and break the game as much as possible :') The RNG I'm referring to is mostly about the gold drops. When you arrive at the dark lands cow you're gonna be a bit short, sometimes you'll have more and sometimes you'll have less, but you'll always be a bit short. So ideally you'll get all the gold you need from the pillbugs to the left of the cow. Sometimes they just don't give you enough and you'll have to do the screen left of that, with the gold chest. The other (and more important) RNG is how long it takes for you to get the shopkeepers to walk up to the wall so that you can interact with them. A LOT of runs die here because they just don't want to behave. I think it's like a 1/4? But they can also delay moving a lot so you can lose tons of time even if they're choosing the right path. And sometimes they choose the right path but move away so quickly that you don't have time to interact with them (that's usually just a skill issue though, you should be able to catch them most of the time. It depends-- their speed is random as well)
Wow that is just awesome. Still, I cannot understand what input you do to get stuck at the edge of the screen in the first dungeon and in the final zone. I understand you need to be half stuck in the edge to perform the OTB, but I cannot make it myself
Ah that's something that only works on the old engine versions! There's no special inputs, you just need to be playing on v1.02-v1.07. For this I'm playing on v1.07c which is sort of a hybrid between the community patch v1.08 version and v1.07, I put up a download here including the source and some notes on what it does different www.speedrun.com/dink_smallwood/resources
Been a good while so I had to go check; yes, you can pick it up! None of the tables here has collision so you can just go over them no cheats required. Unfortunately though all the food is made out of plastic and is impossible to eat i.imgur.com/ox1dAyp.jpeg
If you pause as the game is scrolling over to that screen you can see that the cliff is misaligned between these two screens, creating a gap in the collision that you can walk through! This (and one other misalignment like this) was present in all versions that RTSoft released (v1.02-v1.07) and wasn't fixed until the v1.08 community patch where also, notably for speedrunning, Redink1 wrote some code that fixed the screen lock glitch
Ha, jokes on you Mr. so-called Ecce Porfirium (if that is even your real name). I already sold my world record trophy before you exposed me! It's too late. I already have several alt accounts with various different world records on them. All. Musicless. I'm going to purchase cat food for my evil black cat which I am currently maliciously stroking as I'm typing this, with the AD REVENUE.
Great run dude, I always loved Dink Smallwood and this showed me a lot of the game I didn't even know.

Can you get that teasing defense potion on the king's table with cheats or is it just deco?
