A perfect theme for an empire that have passed his golden age and is crumbling. Powerful but whit a note of melancholy in it, like a marching Sysiphus throug his inevitable fate
Because it is the Romans, dude. The melancholy of their last centuries relying on foreign Germanic they used to discriminate as barbarians to defend Europe to the end against Huns… the whole tragedy I can feel in this theme. Just beautiful
Absolutely wonderful! And so deep! The sound of an Empire that is crumbling but still remember its glorious days and wants to fight until the end to prevail against all odds! Really beautiful!
This feels very close to the tragedy of being Roman Empire/Civ: a dying trance, with sheer discipline (of her people) moving against high tides, while incorporating external influences as we hear some gothic, french and hunnic instruments within. Surely enough, all notes here lead to Rome. What a beauty! What a trance!!!

Hab deine ehemaligen Bandkollegen dieses Jahr auf dem Dark Troll Festival zum Abschied spielen sehen, das war nochmal eine sehr schöne Gelegenheit ein offizielles Ende an das Kapitel zu setzen mit einem feierlichen Abschluss. Hätte mich natürlich gefreut wenn du da auch am Start gewesen wärst (nicht zu letzt auch um nochmal die Finis Terrae zu signieren, die hängt jetzt leider ohne deine Unterschrift bei mir an der Wand…), aber ich kann auch verstehen, dass es vielleicht ein Kapitel war welches man nicht nochmal wieder aufschlagen wollte. Ist ja auch egal, jedenfalls freue ich mich, dass ihr alle noch Musik macht, egal ob jetzt zusammen oder auf eigenen Pfaden. Das neue Projekt der anderen Jungs ist auch der absolute Hammer. Ist zwar die Römer Theme aber... es wurde so eben das neue DLC für AoE2: The Mountain Royals Angekündigt! Ich habe so eben die Themen von Georgien und Armenien gehört, ich tippe mal sehr stark die Themen kommen aus deiner Feder? Man klingen die Wunderschön ! Vor allem Georgien hat´s mir angetan

Hey Vitalis, Top 5 kann ich gerne machen, ich muss aber auch zugeben das mir insgesammt bestimmt 80-85% der Civ Themen gefallen^^ Hier meine Favoriten, Byzantiner ist Nummer *1* und der rest ist ohne Nummer^^ Byzantiner, Burgunder, Litauer, Römer, Georgien. Freue mich auf mehr Content von dir in der Zukunft :) . Persönlich würde ich es mega feiern wenn es nochmal direkt neue Soundtracks von dir geben würde. Speziell das Afrikanische Theme fehlt ja in AoE2 vom Soundtrack her, wenn man die Civ Themen mal weg streicht. Das war damals von Microsoft eine verpasste Chance finde ich. Ich weis nicht ob du da nochmal etwas in der Richtung nachlegen könntest als eben *Inoffizielle* Soundtracks die sich dennoch Perfekt einfügen würden wie deine Rajas und Khans Musikstücke. Du meinst wahrscheinlich mit Afrikanisch Theme die InGame Tracks oder? (weil das Main Theme für Afrika gibt es - sogar offiziell damals noch) Das empfinde ich ja auch so, dass es eine gute Chance gewesen wäre, hier mehr musikalisch rauszuholen. Allerdings wird oft auf anderer Ebene entschieden und man kann persönlich wenig dagegen machen 🙂 Liebe Dank für deine Worte Steve!
@@VitalisEirich I played age1 campaign already but now found out it is the same in both games. And i found out i messed it all up and sometime ago changed the music to "classic". So the themes never played in the beginning of a match - went back to "standard" now :D
I have listened to this music 100 times and I still can't tell if 0:19 is an instrument or a chorus of plaintive female voices, but this part just give me chills!

it brought back memories of the game imperium 3 the great battles of rome( sorru the comparison) but the roman theme is of a triumphal entry into the city or a battle, then it ends or they engage in a battle.
I'm not really interested in the history of the Roman Empire, but your ordinal and extended themes are real brilliants, thank you for keeping work on theme.

Hi Vitalis! I was wondering what inspired you to compose the Roman theme like this. I love all of your work, but often wonder what you base your idea of instruments used, melodies etc. on. Personally I always associated the music of a game called Caesar III with Rome: th-cam.com/video/DfJMWRHrixQ/w-d-xo.html That sort of epic, imperialistic undertone is lacking a bit in your work, but I still love it. Perhaps the Caesar III music is historically completely wrong though, but it always used to fill me with the pride a Roman general must've had after a conquest. 😄 Hopefully you know that every single note of your work for AoE2 is deeply embedded in hundreds of thousands of us and they are melodies that will stick with us forever. Your work makes the game a lot better and I thank you for it.
I don't think the romans used the high trumpets/ bagpipes. The initial part resembles more gaul's music or even norther britian, more folklore style than an empire's one. From 1:16, it sounds good. Although, after 1:45 i would have used something with a more grave tone than something relaxing.
I guess u are not that wrong with ur feeling / interpretation. The main instrument at the beginning is a "pibgorn" with roots at wales. However that instrument sounds very similiar to the romans "cornu". So overall I wouldnt say they dont used these "high" instruments. We talking here almost about a millenium. This makes it more complicated for any choice of authentic music / music instruments. it doesn't mean that you should pay less attention to it. But the compromise is also, that I want to present this civilization as a big empire as good as possible. Also with instruments (for example like strings) which are absolutly wrong from the historical side. 1:45 I agree here with you and somehow I had also this feeling about it. I deceided to this melody becouse of the transition to the main melody. Thanks for your interesting and constructive thoughts!

I am not a fan of the long pause for the "drop" at the end but this is superbly crafted. Vitalis Eirich must be protected.
