This piece is so very old fashioned in its loveliness, harmonies, and sensibility. It is also very melodic at a time when many classical composers had given up on the idea of melody. Wonderful orchestration. He did compose very likable music.

I usually never find myself thinking "man, that ended too soon!"
Now it happens every time I listen to Toru Takemitsu ;)

I understand why one might think that Takemitsu and Debussy could be spoken of in the same breath, the harmony in this piece certainly has some 20th century French sonorities - Messiaen came more readily to my mind than Debussy - but if you focus on the rhythm (and the use of repetition to achieve motion) the two composers are worlds apart.
Thank you for making this music available, I shall return here and listen to this many times.

Archipelago E. for small orchestra (21 players) does not refer to the usual symbols that influence Takemitsu. Here, the impression of matter suspended in silence and agglomerating is inspired by modern cosmology and the discover of new galaxies and the way they start, develop and disappear. But anyway, the inspiration coming from nature is always present in Takemitsu's inspiration, under so many forms !!!!!

Reading this, it excited my interest to learn more about Takemitsu's work, as I study to become a composer myself. Would you happen to know any well-informed book on the matter?

Fantastic composer. Difficult to even pinpoint his influences but I suspect it is the northern Europeans from Sibelius to Laangard to Norgaard. The stillness and solitude are all Takemitsu.
