    Although the composer once admitted that he took the title for Rain Tree Sketch from a can of shaving foam, the piece and several others in this invaluable collection share a watery theme which links them back to the music of Debussy as well as the more obvious influence of Messiaen. This collection of Takemitsu’s piano music is filled with a quizzical air and often touches of oblique humour, as though someone is smiling, somewhere. With warm, softly resounding chords and pitter-pattering melodic motifs above, Takemitsu’s piano so often evokes rain gently falling on earth and leaves. There are bright, brisk flashes of light as well as a pervasive undertone of melancholy, which in a work such as Les Yeux Clos can be accounted for by the work’s nature as a memorial to a friend.
    Born in 1987, the Belgian pianist Lukas Huisman has made a speciality of new music, studying with the likes of Ian Pace and Geoffrey Douglas Madge. Through these and other teachers he has immersed himself in the complex worlds of Brian Ferneyhough and Kaiksohru Sorabji, among others, requiring a phenomenal technique as well as an appetite for the unfamiliar and challenging.

    Its.... I don't know how to fully put into words all the emotions I feel right now... Thinking of a past, a present and even a future that may or may not have existed... Past lives I may have or think I experienced... Ethereal but daunting... A faint memory so gruesome, trying to come up from the depths on malice it was buried... Forgotten... For a reason.

    Takemitsu's paino music is generally realy in his outcome. In addition, since we are accustomed to his fabulous orchestration, the sound of the piano solo creates another world, even if we recognize the melodix/harmonic style of his author

    I love Takemitu's music so much. Thanks so much for uploading this! Also it's a nice touch that "Les yeux clos 2" was before "Rain tree sketch" in this vid, because i noticed that the last note of "Les yeux clos 2" is in the beginning chord of "Rain tree sketch" so it made for a really smooth transition lol. IDK if this was intentional, but I thought it was neat lol. (For reference i'm talking about 11:20)

      @@BrilliantClassics thank you .Playing graphic notation requires being an expert in contemporary music. It's not the time for ordinary pianists to play. In the first place, it is not a score written by Toru Takemitsu. He came up with the idea, but it was written by another person. Yuji Takahashi called it a present. The relationship between the two was not very good.Takahashi recorded Corona.

    The song title is too beautiful and poetic literary.
    Is "Corona" not included in the CD?
    Why? Pianist composer " Yuji Takahashi" played figure music for over 30 minutes.

    I find myself trying to balance on the edge of a razor! Do I like it or do I hate it? I'm continuing to listen hoping something will convince me, satisfy me, offend me. Like Schoenberg, in very small doses and only when I'm in that rare mood. It reminds me of a 2-year-old in a pensive mood "experimenting" at the keyboard, having just discovered the sostenuto pedal! After 10 minutes of it, I've decided it's not for me. Boring and lazy come to mind. I won't listen to more or put it on again. Okay, that's me, thank goodness there are other opinions so the rich and varied world of art survives in all its countless facets.

    • @balladewilliams
      @balladewilliams 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I encourage you to put that opinion to the test by listening to his orchestral music. 'A Flock Descends' for example - ideally while reading the score. He was a complete master of orchestration despite being almost entirely self-taught, and if you came back to these piano works after comprehending his use and understanding of timbres, harmony, you may realise that what he has in mind is something not at all "experimental" in that shallow sense you suggest. In fact, it's not uncommon to pick out very traditional, neo-romantic structural elements in his pieces. Take the first piece here: Rain Tree Sketches II. If you can't tell me where the main melodic theme starts and ends, and then gets developed, you were missing something rather fundamental to Takemitsu's technique - namely, his rather conservative structures. Don't get sidetracked by his focus on the sostenuto pedal - at least not at first. The proper 'way in' to this music is the same as with Schoenberg - there are actually very traditional ideas at play, if you give yourself time to listen to more pieces, and gain a broader understanding. With Schoenberg it's even easier - Verklarte Nacht is hardly even modernistic, so you can enjoy it on a superficial level. But it also shows you his mastery of harmony, orchestration, and late romantic structures, which should convince you he wasn't just messing about on the keyboard when he wrote his piano concerto. There's reason to the madness of Schoenberg and Takemitsu, except none of it is madness once you properly understand the reason. In fact, in the case of these two particular composers, much of it begins to seem rather conservative (with the exception of purely serialist works by schoenberg, and the Cageian pieces by Takemitsu at a certain point in his development).

      And one thing that Takemitsu definitely was not, was lazy. Read his biography.
