  • This video goes over all the supplies that you can use for dice making and what their general purposes are for. To get started you can work with just a starter set of dice, some silicone and resin, but I wanted to show you all the options at your disposal!
This video has been LONG requested, and I figured with the holidays coming up, this would be a great getting started guide for some possible new dice makers. All of the products that I mentioned are linked below based on the order that they show up in the video. If you have any questions, send them my way, and happy making to all you Dice Goblins out there. :)
    PRODUCT LINKS:
If I don't have the exact same product in the link, it's either no longer available, or I couldn't find it. I will link an equivalent.
All links to Amazon are Amazon Affiliate links. That means that it doesn't cost you a cent more, but I get a small % kickback if you buy from my link. Feel free to purchase elsewhere, this just really helps me out at no cost to you. :)

So one thing that I want to clarify is that the Sophie and Toffee premade molds that I show in the video are technically squish molds, AND open face molds. I didn't want to confuse newbies to the hobby by saying "This is what an open face mold looks like!... Also it's a squish mold."
I plan to go over mold types, as well as give the S&T molds a proper review in the near future. :)

Everything I found online either assumed I had years of resin experience, or $1000s to throw into it, and I just kind of put the idea aside and never bothered. You're videos have really been inspiring me to maybe try again. Maybe I'll even make it my new years resolution! Thanks!

You are 100% right to use a respirator. It's not always easy to know if the filters you have on it are rated for fumes though. The pink one in the video is for particulates and not harmful vapors like those from resins.
3M has a wealth of information on which filters should be used with which hazards.
I use the pink (2097) in my woodworking, but switch to an activated carbon filter when I do any resin work or aerosol spraying.
Great videos, thanks for making them and keep it up!

The information I found online and on the filter packaging seemed to indicate that it was for harmful vapors :o I'll look into it. @@Rybonator Did some digging for the info:
Data sheet for the 2097 (particulate and nuisance vapors) multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/5188O/3m-particulate-filter-2097-p100.pdf
Here's 3M's page for choosing a filter. It looks like a combination filter ( like ChoriQueso suggests ) is what you want. The black label filters: www.3m.com/3M/en_US/safety-centers-of-expertise-us/respiratory-protection/respirator-selection/
This is a good video that goes over the different types of filters: th-cam.com/video/0RMJ4T5BDHY/w-d-xo.html
I know from woodworking, a respirator makes a huge difference in my lungs. Using things with solvents or organic vapors is a whole other class of dangers over particulates. The occasional casting is probably fine, frequent casting of things I'd definitely use more than a particulate filter.
This turned out longer than I expected. Love the videos, and you've made me interested in casting my own dice. Thanks!

One thing in regards to mold making was something you mentioned in the past, it was making molds using the pressure pot to remove air pockets to get a smooth mold rather then a vacuum chamber. The process seems pretty self explanatory but seeing someone more experienced walk through it would be awesome as possibly removing the "need" for a vacuum chamber removes a cost barrier to entry for the hobby

I would too. I almost bought some, but couldn't find a proper review. In the vids I could find, it looked like bubbles on the side the lid went on was a common issue, but because they were channels that focused on how pretty or "kawaii" their finished pieces were they hid that fact by not showing that side. Since I couldn't be sure, I decided spending that kind of money was not worth the risk.

This is really cool. Thank you. I currently carve bone dice on occasion but have been thinking about getting into resin stuff. This will help me make dice but is also helpful for other resin projects.

Oh man, I really should try the bone dice making :) Sounds wicked

@@Rybonator yeah if you do the bone, start out making classic dice with pips rather than numbers. I’ve been doing it for a couple years and I still can’t do anything other than cube dice cause with bone you have to carve it. I’d also like to see you make an opaque resin dice set in a way that mimics bone. Maybe that’s a good idea for a future video? I’d think that would be pretty awesome as well

3:04, haha, that reminds me of a funny story about such dice. A few years back, my buddy and I were at GenCon and my friend got a plastic wrapped die at the Catylst booth. Back at the hotel, he couldn’t help but wonder if it was candy, so he popped it in his mouth. It had the consistency of candy, but was so tasteless that he genuinely couldn’t tell and spat it out. He spent the next two years trying to solve that mystery and eventually got a conclusive answer that it was in fact candy.

I started watching your channel originally to figure out why my resin cast(non-dice) comes out with little bumps(non-degassed silicone molds with pressure pot resin casting). Since then I've become a dice goblin watching each and every video to see different takes on the craft. I've designed my own dice that I've printed in a SLA printer but haven't yet to personally purchased the vacuum and pressure pots yet. I've been gearing up with everything else aliexpress has to offer though! The reason I'm posting this however is, while watching your videos here and there....my 6 year old daughter took notice and she..is now a fan. Every time she sees you have a new video, she begs me to watch it! As far as I know, she's hasn't even held dice yet!

That's so awesome! I love this comment :) Thank you for sharing that with me. I hope that your Daughter enjoys and get's to play with all the dice in the world! Tell her I said hi :)

Love your videos dude! First came across ya a few months ago, just browsing TH-cam. Saw the title "How to..." and checked it out. Love how in depth you get and how easy it is to follow along with your steps. I've yet to actually start making my own dice, but I think it is going to be a much easier venture after watching these videos you put out. : D
I love this one in particular as, like you said, it covers the basic stuff needed to even get started. Good to know I already have one element obtained... and plenty of them really, the dice, as I have taken to collecting dice like I used to collect marbles.. lol. I'm one that thinks it is going to be much more fun making my own to collect than buying them all the time though XD
Thanks again for all the videos you do for us!

I'm really interested in making dice sets for me and my group and this video is great but man is it easy (for me) to get overwhelmed with all the possibilities/things to look out for. Well, I guess now with the pandemic I'll have all the time in the world to think about what I want and how I'll want to do it, and I'll figure out the rest when I'm at it.

Great info, tossed a like so I can (hopefully) find it in the future when I have time to dice-goblin out some.
Really loved the jet black ultra-edgelord molding you did, that pigment reminded me of laser printer toner...evil evil stuff, will stain anything it gets on.

Oh yeah, it's a hella staining material haha. I'm glad you liked it :) If you ever start the dice goblining, let me know! Hopefully this channel can help :)
