Democracy under threat? The rise of the far-right in Germany | DW Documentary

  • Support for the far-right is growing in Germany, raising fears of a new 1933 - the year Adolf Hitler came to power. Does the recent electoral success of the far-right Alternative for Germany party indicate the country’s democracy is under threat?
In the eastern state of Thuringia, the extreme right has become the strongest force in the state parliament for the first time in post-war history. The development has triggered comparisons to the rise of Hitler - it was in Thuringia that the Nazis first entered a regional government, just three years before Hitler took power nationwide.
Some Germans are concerned that democracy is hanging in the balance. Hundreds of thousands of people are now taking to the streets regularly to voice their support for democracy and take a stand against right-wing extremism. But is the Germany of 2024 really comparable to that of 1933?
This documentary explores parallels between then and now, and also looks at other events that took place in Germany in the 1980s and 1990s. Back then, neo-Nazis wanted to make the small town of Langen in Hesse the first "foreigner-free” town in Germany. After German reunification in 1990, right-wing extremist groups also became increasingly influential in East Germany. Is the AfD's election success a further step in the growth of the far-right in Germany and a threat to democracy?

It's not democracy if it enforces conformity, if it uses the power of the state to limit choice irrationally. Democracy is about the protection of minorities, not the rights of majorities.
That's why we opposed communism, and infiltrated, persecuted and banned communist parties when they were the main threat to democracy (often - but not always - funded by our international opponents). That's why we now oppose fascism, and should infiltrate, persecute and ban fascist parties (who are again often - but not always - funded by our international opponents).

There is nothing wrong with banning things and limiting freedom, as long as it for a sound reason.
You can claim that ethnic purity or social conformity are a sound reason, but that's not acceptable in a western country. Part of that is our centuries-old (evolving) culture of human rights and personal freedom. But another part is our experience over the past two centuries of how bad ethno-nationalism and fascism always turn out.

This is not a bad thing itself, though the claim that it is a democracy is a lie. It is a betrayal of the people by its rulers. More so, the problems of the minorities could have been solved way easier, but this rulership brought in more migrants, at its own initiative. Creating chaos, making more problems to solve LOL. True socialism (read: concern about peoples' rights and protecting minorities) would maintain order and work to minimise the problems of society. What they have done for decades now was the opposite. This "democracy" in the West is a scam.
Never take things out of context. For example, providing housing to a migrant family is called protection. But you can do that only if you afford it. To take housing away from a local family is called violation of their rights.

You are aware that calling everyone far-right completely demolishes your credibility, right? There is nothing extreme about caring about your country, culture and the safety of those living there. There is nothing extreme about people wanting their tax money to go to other citizens and not migrants, and not wanting to put further strain on the already strained infrastructure of a country.
Every country should be putting their citizens and culture first. Every single one. You can't complain about colonization and then cheer it in other instances. You can not protect some cultures but demonize others who do the same. It is not a logical or honest position to take and it does nothing to help people. It only creates resentment and a much weaker and divided country. You scream about rights, while trying to destroy others rights. It's simply gross and incredibly transparent. It's for partisan power, not what's best for people.
Let me know when you start being serious. Right now you're nothing but ideologues with no sense, principles or honesty. There's also something called cause and effect. Don't cause things you will cry about later.

I use to have a view of the world that was wayyy too optimistic until the September 11th attacks and everything that came afterwards. I’ve been visiting Germany regularly for the past 4 years now and all I ever see around Germany is graffiti idolizing Marxist ideology. Much like Germany, the USA has been flooded with unvetted illegal immigration. Legal citizens have the right to demand that their government spend their tax money constructively. Other than the culture aspect, legal citizens in the workforce who’ve paid into the system also have a right to say no to giving away valuable resources to someone who snuck in. It’s mind boggling to think that is so called far right. Keep believing the world is all unicorns and rainbows. You’ll eventually find out the hard way that it isn’t.

Exactly, all we want is to retain control over our countries, who get's to enter the country, what standards they have to abide by, and that they are forcibly removed if they don't. This is literally the law, and not just in theory but in practice, everywhere on earth. Yet only Western nations somehow aren't allowed to be sovereign. It's a common leftist ploy to gaslight those they don't like with terms like "racist", "xenophobic" and of course "islamophobic", but the truth of the matter is we (right wing nationalists) are none of that, if we were the streets would be full of dead muslims and other foreigners, yet in fact it's muslims and other non-Western migrants who are extremely disproportionately responsible for murderings others, instead of them getting murdered. The leftists and their cronies did the same thing in the US recently with the whole Haitian migrants thing, calling everyone who was critical of the Haitian mass migration or who outed their crimes as "racists", yet they seem to be oblivious to the fact that a large part of those who outed the Haitian crime waves and the problems the Haitians created in their communities were black US citizens themselves, so much for them being "racist".

Unchecked immigration would always lead to something like this. We’re seeing it accross the world. People swarm into a 1st world country for a better life, the country is gracious to them by offering superior security, health, opportunities and infrastructure. Many immigrants then try to push their own culture down the throats of the host nation and its citizens rather than being grateful and melding with it to start a new life. This is mostly egged on by a far left party.
All this leads to increased crime and a reduction in quality of life for everyone. Result, citizens turn to a far right party to, “correct” the swing which doesn’t always work.

Yes. I can understand Germans. I am currently living in the asylum camp. I am from Burma and I enter legally with student visa and applied asylum because I really cannot go back. However, some asylum seekers who entered Germany illegally harassed and extorted me. They do not respect the German culture and norms. There were illicit activities going on in some camps that I stayed. Even I am still asylum seeker, I now can understand why the right wing parties are raising in EU.

@@wyveres They literally can't be, in fact what is called "far right" 99% of the time isn't even right wing at all, but rather national socialist, aka leftist policies but for the native population only. Case in point is Geert Wilder's PVV, who was all but identical to those of the SP (Dutch Socialist Party, i.e. the far left), only differing on the whole dozens of gender thing, climate, and migration, in the other >95% they were exactly the same. And no, if on dozens of different issues a party has the exact same stance as the far left Socialist Party and differs only on 3 points, it doesn't magically move them from far-left to far-right, at most it would make them center left.

The problem is, Right-Wing politics was abused in the 30s and 40s which eventually led to catastrophic consequences. In my opinion, the Right now shouldn’t be compared then. Today, the Right focuses on key issues such as combatting the threat of illegal immigration, Islamic terror, socialism and woke feminism, issues that deserve attention today.
