    When Britain handed Hong Kong back to China in 1997, Chinese leaders agreed that Hong Kong would be able to keep its economic and political systems, including some of the civil freedoms denied to China’s citizens on the mainland, for the next 50 years.
    Although Hong Kong still has nearly 30 years of semi-autonomy left, China has started tightening its grip, and many believe it is chipping away at Hong Kong’s freedoms. In this episode, I explore how Hong Kong is dealing with the looming deadline and China’s premature moves.

      At the same, @Duffy63, the us parties don't form coalitions because they do not need to.... because us basically doesn't have any other party to challenge them so they keep meddling between each other, probably why it seems to be around 50s/50s for them.
      When it comes to most of Europe, the multiparty system is a true multiparty system where there isn't one or two major parties but 4/5, and they end up at the same levels, so they form alliances and are forced to cooperate.

      @Alan Xue True that Macao is rather rich for the casinos that were built and operated for decades. Yet the importance of HK is not to be diminished. For a city that holds the title for being a recognized financial center that possesses a relatively prestigious education system, trading centre but most importantly the only source to convert currency from RMB to USD for trading purposes, it's clear and goes without saying that HK and Macao are 2 cities that are incomparable. Still Importance of hk would remain to be prior to that of macao.

For a place that stays afloat with their reliance being based on the entertainment sectors like the aforementioned casinos. The city itself still struggles to construct a well connected railway of its own till this very day. And if I remembered correctly, most of the projects that includes the participation of both cities would often have their bills paid by HK

      I kind of admire the factioning of political parties in parts of Europe. I'm more familiar with the UK, my grandfather being English, and although Conservative and Labour dominate, clearly there is more influence from other factions (UKIP, Lib Dems, Scotts, Green, etc.) than in the US. Our founding fathers, in the US, (although many were not fans of political parties) felt that having many factions (i.e. Federalism) was important for the balance of power, as each faction is a check on the others from attaining overarching authority.
      I'm not much of partisan myself, but it is clear that, for the betterment of the country and the people, it is a necessity to always have an opposition to those in leadership, a check on their power and actions, as legislation is not meant to be easy or passed hastily. China fundamentally lacks that check on power with a one-party rule.

    Sorry for spotting an issue in this video: It is overly simplistic to say "Hong Kong's evening new speaks Mandarin". The full picture is this: The Hong Kong evening news programme mentioned in this video is produced by TVB (Television Broadcasting Co), which has two main channels, Jade and Pearl. Jade is a Cantonese-oriented channel whereas Pearl is an English-oriented channel. At 6:30 pm, Jade airs the Cantonese version of the news programme while Pearl airs the Mandarin version. Pearl also airs the English version at 7:30 pm. As a majority of Hong Kong's population is Cantonese-speaking, it can be said that the Cantonese version is the most-watched one. The Mandarin version could be targeted to immigrants from Mainland China. The English version targets an English-speaking audience consisting of expats, domestic helpers from ASEAN countries (mainly Philippines and Indonesia) and immigrants from the South Asian sub-continent (India, Nepal, Pakistan etc).

    • @JJJJ-gl2uf
      @JJJJ-gl2uf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I noticed that immediately. I visit Hong Kong monthly and there is plenty of Cantonese language news and other programming available in Hong Kong. The Mandarin programming is for the large number of Mandarin speakers living there now, as you rightly point out.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That part really misled the audience. Hong Kong's news media is still OVERWHELMINGLY Cantonese. The Mandarin/Putonghua programming is for new immigrants who have not learned Cantonese. Even the written media uses Cantonese words which will throw off a native Mandarin speaker. A glaring oversight--I hope it was not intentional.
