in Māori culture there are gods for domains like the forest, the ocean, the wind, growing and cultivating crops, volcanoes etc and Maui was the demi god who went up against the gods and either defeated, tricked and won things for us, like fire, coconuts, he fished up my country Aotearoa, he gave the sun a hiding to slow it down so the days would be longer- i grew up with his stories and revisiting them as an adult has been crazy, some versions are not super kid friendly lol. Awesome to see you checking these films out:)

@@Vyke-roundtableKnight that laughing emoji doesn't really hold much weight, it's kind of just a thing people use to end their sentences. Wouldn't think that deeply about it
I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. I love how they cast Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls) as Moana's mother.
Honestly, I think Moana was correct in having to go out passed the reef. Sure, yes, she wants nothing more than to explore, but I believe she was thinking about her tribe more than herself. If you can't survive locally, you have no choice but to stretch yourselves farther. Both father and daughter were right in their own way.
The "haka" that Maui does is a traditional war dance, used to intimidate opponents before battle. Warriors would do the haka as a scare tactic, sometimes in hopes of warding off the enemies before any fighting and bloodshed broke out. It is also very sacred, because warriors use it to call upon their ancestors and spirits to fill them with strength and physical abilities for the upcoming battle. In modern times, it is performed for cultural ceremonies, and is performed most famously before Aotearoa's (NZ) All Black rugby team play rugby. They do this for the same reasons that they would for battle back in the day (except its just rugby not war). Although all islands in the pacific (polynesia, melanesia, mirconesia) have war dances that are different and unique but of the same nature, but the term "Haka" is mainly used by the Maori of Aotearoa, New Zealand. It's also important to note two more things: First off, this movie is not an "NZ movie" as a lot of the comments down below have claimed. It's a movie about a Pasifika princess and pasifika culture and our history as voyagers. There are elements throughout the movie that have been taken from islands all over the pacific. In fact, there isn't really any part of this movie that is solely based on one pacific country. There are Maori, Tongan, Samoan, Kuki Arangian, Tahitian, Hawai'ian, Fijian and even more elements from other island countries in the pacific. And my second important note is: remember that this movie is all about real cultural customs, stories and characters that real people care immensely about because they are part of their history and culture. Maui, for example, is a character that is the topic of many stories across the pacific. He was used to explain why things like fire, daylight, coconut trees and islands existed back before our people had scientific evidence. So if you don't know something, or something during the film captures your interest, its better to research said things before commenting or saying stuff that is not true and is a little insulting. Right, sorry for the essay, but thats it. Love your videos by the way Don!
It’s not the most obvious thing in the world, but if you pay attention, you’ll notice that saving the sea turtle is kind of a test. if you pay attention, you notice that right after saving the sea turtle, there’s like a magical energy pulse wave that bursts out across the ocean. later on the ocean will also perform other tests to test to resolve and find out if she’s ready to face the journey ahead, and the tests it will bring.
