Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in! I know this is a bit of a departure for me, but I hope that you enjoyed it regardless of the growing pains that come with trying different things. If there's something I missed, maybe I got something wrong about the lore or there's just an editing mistake you picked up on, please let me know. I'm always looking to better my content in any way. No point in doing this if you're just gonna become complacent, right?
If you're looking forward to Zombies content though, don't worry, I've got a real RAVE of a review in the works. Yeah, that's real good, me.
As for the occasionally snarky little segment descriptors, I figured I would bring that back from my earlier reviews (like my original BO3 review with the silly segment names) but combine them with the title card presentation of my Beast From Beyond review to prevent breaking flow. Then halfway through editing, I realized "oh shit, that's what Raycevick does lmao".
And here I thought I was being clever. Ah well, what can you do?
P.S. There's some things I intentionally left out because I either wasn't interested in talking about it or the script was just getting WAY too long and I needed to trim it a bit.

So happy you mentioned The Didact barely showing up. Honestly the thing that I hate most about H4's story is that it gives us such a dope villain that we were teased about in the Halo 3 terminals all those years ago, then goes on to show him only twice (TWICE) in the camapign. What a monumental waste

    • @iHuzza
      @iHuzza 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@Grayest Yeah, the writers of Halo 5 said that the Didact will be seen again in some form. However, I really disagree with the Didact only having 2 scenes because of "baby steps with his character arc". It's understandable that the Flood and Covenant weren't really that developed in Halo 1, because they were both antagonists in the first game of the series, and Halo's universe hadn't been established at all before that point and there wasn't (As far as I'm aware) terminals in game like there were in H3/4. In that case, I can understand taking it slow and not knowing everything about them from the get-go.
With the Didact though, a huge amount was already known about his life and his motivations before Halo 4 was even released, yet in the game (besides the terminals), he had about 5 mins of screentime. It would've been easy to actually give him something to do instead of sit inside the Cryptum for 5 missions, but for some reason 343 decided to go with just not having him be present which is just bad writing, especially considering how he's billed as the primary antagonist for that game. If you have a primary antagonist, you need to use them, and 343 did not do that with the Didact.

Didact should have taken Cortana role in guardians it would make the story so much better or even at least have it where he was using a rampant fragment of Cortana

    • @yuchenchen8012
      @yuchenchen8012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@activatehalo7763 But he should have.....the appearance of this character should have been a monumental moment in the Halo franchise, as the forerunners have been teased throughout the Bungie games. And since 343 decided to have a Forerunner appear, he better make a damn impression. Yet, the Didact was just another generic bad guy that was dumb as hell. He now got composed in a comic book and Cortana is the main bad guy. 343 completely wasted all that build up and got nothing out of it. 343 introduced so many cool ideas into the lore, but completely failed to connect it into a grand narrative. The randomness of the extended lore and the appearance of random retcon bullshit such as Cortana coming back and the Flood somehow not dying after the events of Halo 3 (like High Charity being still there is just total stupidity and ruins Halo 3) is just lazy writing.

Please make more of these. This is by far the most truly neutral review I've seen for Halo 4 in years. Most of them just delve down to "tree-for-free gaem bad, bungo gaem goodest" This is also the first video I've seen from your channel and I very much enjoyed it. One thing I did notice is that, Halo 4's story is about Chief becoming human and less of a machine. The intro cinematic features the Spartans looking exactly the same. I can't believe it's taken me years to realize that it's literally showing that Chief is just a cog in the machine, despite how unique he is with his armor and augmentations.

I’m so happy you took the time to talk about the Chief and Cortana arc in this video. It had such and emotional impact on me when I first played through the game I was saddened when people thought it was dumb and forced. It felt like such a natural story to tell and the didact compliments it so well with him being an mirror image of what Chief could be with out Cortana.
It’s a shame that Halo 5 is handled so poorly from a narrative perspective and really down plays everything in 4. Could of been great to see Chief have become more of a human in 5 because he didn’t have Cortana.

  • @T0xicZ

I like a lot of Halo 4, but my biggest issue is the Forerunners. I feel any magic and mystery they had is gone in favor of them being like every other race. Which is amazing as we know there are races above even the Forerunners, which I found the Forerunners being how they were in the original trilogy adding to that. I kind of wish they didn't use them or kept them as a backdrop, using ONI instead or something. Generic art-style complaint, but I find them incredibly over-designed and although I know the Prometheans are sort of different, but giving them weapons that are just like ours is fairly dumb. I think the Forerunners should have been this unimaginable race of beings who we can't even picture in terms of their society. If they even live in a society like we do (rise up).
I did enjoy the reveal of Requiem though, I feel the floating towers were the best addition to their architecture. Oh and I love this game's sound design so much. I also prefer the game to Halo 2 overall, which I know is a hot take. Hope you do a video on that game. If you do replay it, I hope you take note of how out of place the first mission is, playing as Chief. It should have opened as Arbiter's first mission, in my opinion, I feel like this could be an interesting topic of the game's pacing. (Note, I am about as much as a fan as you are, I used to be big into it when I was younger but got into other games).

Totally agree with you. The mystery that's invoked by the Forerunners in the previous games is so entrancing. They definitely should've been kept hidden away, or at least not portrayed so over-the-top. My favorite portrayal of them is from Halo CE. The dark, ominous, massive, intricately illuminated, hieroglyph-ridden structures paint such a massive canvas for your imagination. It helped put me in space. The original skyscapes and darker, more nitty-gritty scifi theme were also a lot more interesting. Wreaked of untraversed territory.

Now I got to get this off my chest, because i need to know something. its about... black ops 4.
Now you have already said your distaste for the game to the point your not even touching it. thats fine but i also have similar feelings towards the game. despite it getting new updates i just dont have the enthusiasm to even pick it back up. the multiplayer i found meh, blackout i won one game on then aint touched it since, and zombies i just.... feel drained. but i cant put into words why i dislike black ops 4.
what im trying to get at, is that i would adore some kind of video explaining in your views, on what the hell has gone wrong with black ops 4. because i cannot honestly put my finger on it. i was so excited for this it but now i just.... i honestly regret even picking it up.

He only survived a nuke because he was surrounded by a hardlight shield, which does sorta make sense - it is Forerunner technology after all, and it was set up that it's basically impenetrable beforehand. With the dying, doesn't the same thing apply to every Halo game? Chief/ Arbiter constantly do crazy shit, like in 3 Chief fell from orbit and walked it off like 10 secs after the game began. But yeah Halo 4's Promethians were annoying as fuck and completely sunk large parts of the game for me, so I see where you're going with the whole army thing lmao

I swear to god every video you do gives me insight i never thought i would get and especially the inspiration to keep making videos. Was that last sentence a bit too much? I dunno.

Real good review Rizzo. While I never played Halo 4 ever, I couldn't help but get my interest back into Halo, as I only played 1-3, alongside a very faint portion of Reach.
Hope you do more reviews like this for other games, like the Gears series, or coming out of left field and giving a Dead by Daylight review. If not, I understand.

While I do think Halo 4 was one of the best campaigns in the franchise in terms of plot, story and quality, I really did not like the core gameplay, and the choice of enemies, especially the Covenant Storm (Jul's Covenant). It just felt like a lazy excuse to keep the same former covenant species in the sandbox because the prometheans were not interesting enough to be replacements. The prometheans, rather than being some new alien race or species unaffiliated with the covenant races, ended up being overhyped forerunner sentinels with a little plot twist in their origins to try to spice things up. I always felt that the enemies you fight in H4 were the biggest letdown. Everything else was top notch.

Y'know, I never really got into Halo, even as a kid, the only game I ever had from the series was Halo 2 on the PC, and that was without multiplayer (fun fact: Halo 2 is fucking impossible to get to run nowadays on modern windows systems). Regardless, I really liked this review, as with most to all of your stuff, and I'm actually considering (eventually) getting an XB1 to play the entire series. So, that'll make two franchises you've convinced me to buy games for with your videos. Looking forward to the reviews of the other campaigns.

I'm 100% on you side for writing when you mentioned characters with "grand plans" that are out of nowhere and are exposition dumps. However, I'm curious as I'm a low level writer with a character like this. My question (anyone can answer btw all feedback is needed) is if this character is mentioned, referenced, or even an important plot point without actually being there from the beginning, could this "grand plan" character be a rewarding revelation for the story?

'Chekhov's gun (Russian: Чеховское ружьё) is a dramatic principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed; elements should not appear to make "false promises" by never coming into play. The statement is recorded in letters by Anton Chekhov several times, with some variation:[1][2][3]
"Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there."[3][4]
"One must never place a loaded rifle on the stage if it isn't going to go off. It's wrong to make promises you don't mean to keep." Chekhov, letter to Aleksandr Semenovich Lazarev (pseudonym of A. S. Gruzinsky), 1 November 1889.[5][6][7] Here the "gun" is a monologue that Chekhov deemed superfluous and unrelated to the rest of the play.
"If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don't put it there." From Gurlyand's Reminiscences of A. P. Chekhov, in Teatr i iskusstvo 1904, No. 28, 11 July, p. 521.[8]
Note the difference between Chekhov's gun and foreshadowing. Chekov was commenting on narrative detail and what details the writer should include. Foreshadowing only vaguely implies that an event will take place in the future, while the Chekhov's gun principle guarantees that an event will happen further along in the story'.
Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. Foreshadowing often appears at the beginning of a story, or a chapter, and it helps the reader develop expectations about the upcoming events.
A writer may implement foreshadowing in many different ways. Some of these ways include: character dialogues, plot events, and changes in setting. Even the title of a work or a chapter can act as a clue that suggests what is going to happen. Foreshadowing in fiction creates an atmosphere of suspense in a story, so that the readers are interested and want to know more.
This literary device is generally used to build anticipation in the minds of readers about what might happen next, thus adding dramatic tension to a story. Moreover, foreshadowing can make extraordinary and bizarre events appear credible, as the events are predicted beforehand so that readers are mentally prepared for them.

    My thoughts:
See I think I'd be more appropriate for Chief to have his armor look more like the Halo 3 armor, then give him his new armor look in Halo 5 after he returned to Earth. It would give off more of a sense of Chief maturing or growing up if you will when he gets his new upgraded armor.
I also would have definitely changed the Forerunners design, gun feel, and AI movement.
The BR and the light machine gun needed a complete rework because they look and sound like toys.
I think the game should've had a boss fight with the Didact.
Cortana should've just died then and there. And have Halo 5 deal more with Chief overcoming hiss loss rather than him fighting her as the villian.
I'd be cool if after the Didact awakening, you'd see the covenant now switch it's allegiance to the Didact and their appearance changes to a more forerunner look. This would be a NEW Covenant now rather than serving the profits, serves the Didact.

To be fair about the intro I don’t remember there being any direct mention to the fact that all Spartans IIs are basically child soldiers in the games themselves. I believe up until this game the only mention that Spartans were child soldiers were in the expanded universe. In fact many Halo fans who have read the books say that Halo 4’s depiction of the Chief was the best of all the Halo games.

I think what people consider an extreme change in closeness between MC & C is not that extreme at all...... As someone whole follows the halo novels it seemed pretty understandable imo.....
Also that intro cutscene is one of the important humanity in the game since it sets up the main theme of the entire game: Chief's humanity

Unlike Halo 5, Halo 4 had a lot more rememberable levels and moments. Moments include the introduction of the Diedac (might of spelt that wrong), the Ghost run, your first Mantis, the Litch battle, the Pelican, the nuke and much more. While my favourite moments in Halo 5 were the Kraken battle and the Phaeton cave.

Gameplay wise this one is definitely a step back. For me Halo Reach elevated the controls and made everything feel so much tighter. This game felt more like a step back to Halo 3 just with aiming and I didn't enjoy that too much.
While exploring forerunners some more and going into the issue of rampancy was an obvious direction for the story I don't know if I like how it was done here. A lot of what happened just left me confused and I didn't enjoy fighting the new enemies.
Maybe this could have been better if it just focussed on the relationship between John and Cortana and her descent into rampancy without the didact and all that. I don't know if going from one universal threat to another was really needed.

20:27 tbf, it is the fourth mainline game in the series, and its not like the lore of the previous games were well explain. Source Me: This was the first campaign I completed, I didn't know about the truce with the elites, mainly as I missed the line about "I thought we had a truce with the covenent", though even then it doesn't exactly clarify anything as they didn't have a truce with the covenent, only the Elites whom split off from the covenent.
    Also other things dislike;
I don't like the rampansy plot, I mean how does it make sense, who would design an AI to kill itself when it gets to old and has to much data, and even then she is basically an overly advanced computer program, just have her dump or delete the memories of her in space. I think the best solution would have had her infected by the logic plague during the events of Halo 2-3, and while Chief was able to get to her before it could fully take over with the influence of the Gravemind, it would still slowly take over while stuck in space, and worsening during Halo 4.
Why is Cortana thick all of a sudden? While sure she has appeared different in every other halo game, it was still semi-consistent in terms basic features.
Why is Chief thick all of a sudden? This one is worse, as somehow his armour changed completely during cryo sleep.
Why are Elite thick all of a sudden? Why do the elites look more brutish than the freakin brutes?
I want there to be the Engineers helping humanity. Not a huge complaint, just a want.
Prometheans suck, both conceptually and gameplay wise. As you pointed out they are not fun to fight due being able to be revived, and teleport. But they also have stupidly broken shields that regen extremly quickly.
Also 343 over complicated the forerunners in both design (way to many floaty bits, to much grey upon neon with nothing to break the designs up), and lorewise as stated by the Gravemind, and Guilty Spark, humans are forerunners, or at least an offshoot that survived the firing of the rings. Though that also may have been a bit muddled by terminal entries in the Bungie Games.
The Didact, while a cool villain that was killed off to early, has the force for some reason, which is probably why they made his 'boss fight' a quick time event. Also quick time event.
The enemies blending into the background, making it difficult to determine rank, or even notice them half the time.
Don't exactly mind the new jackal design, I just want my chicken men back. In fact they could have used the various 'jackal' species to determine covenant roles, the new one, more aggressive frontline soldier such as shield jackals, or even as engineers and drivers work, and the chicken men can stay as designated snipers and long ranged arms.
    Things I liked:
Conceptually: the Storm covenent, just need to fix the AI, coloured ranks and relevence to campaign. Maybe have their boss help you for a while, helping him fight off the Promeathean till you can wake up his god then either kill him in this game or do something with him in the next one.
The Didact: The Didact was a cool villain cut short by shitty grenade on his second appearance. He needed to be shown more, be and active threat that doesn't die in a glorified cutscene.
Prometheans: Don't hate the idea of fighting forerunner robots, just needed to overhaul their design, functions and behaviours.
Spartan IVs: Great Idea poor excection. Should have had a group stay behind with chief as he went rogue going after the Didact, and be a little tougher than buffed up marines.
Some of the weapons are quite fun and fit the halo sandbox well. Such as the UNSC Sticky Grenade pistol, and the UNSC Railgun.

Here's how I think the Aether story will end: The characters kill monty in a huge boss fight. The screen fades to white and the outro begins. We see each of the characters finally set free from the cycle they have been trapped in and can finally have their own lives back. Before they go through 4 different portals, they say goodbye to eachother and screen fades to black. This is it. Its over. There is no fighting left, and this 10 year endeavor has come to and end. But then we see Willard Wyler and he says "This is a masterpiece. This will be my return to the big screen."

I really enjoyed this review. I personally wish the series ended here, 5 was a major disappointment to me. What made me upset with 5 wasn't even the bad writing in the story, it was the lack of couch co op, which made if feel like the soul was ripped out of the game. I hope infinite can return to its roots.
Also if you enjoyed the flight level in 4, you'd probably like every final mission in the ace combat ever, as it seems to be an almost exact carbon copy, complete with epic music and flying through narrow tunnels lol.

I am confused on Chief's size, at least in the final cutscene. How tall in comparison to Palmer he is as he walks by her is about how tall he was to a normal person in the original trilogy. So it seems like he grew an extra five feet.
