  • Dr. Karen Becker is a very popular veterinarian who preaches raw and fresh foods. She answers the question "What should I feed my cat with kidney disease?"
Her answer was so frustrating to hear. I was a Hills veterinary rep for 34 years.

When Dr Becker & Rodney Habib ganged up together this was when the holistic world of information got BIGGER & went nuts..
It was around 2016 & on Australian news we had an 30yr old Kelpie/Border Collie called "Maggie" who lived & worked daily on a milk farm in Victoria Australia, this is when I hear about Rodney Habib & we were having our yearly "Dog Lovers Festival" in August, 1st one was in Sydney & the 2nd festival was in Melbourne Australia, where all the pet food companies all meet up together, showing new foods, give away samples etc & Rodney was coming to Australia to go to the Melbourne Dog Lovers Festival & interview Mr Brain McLaren on his farm.
I'm pretty sure Maggie passes away just before Rodneys came out to Australia for the BIG interview with Maggies owner, she was 30yrs old & Rodney wanted to know what did Maggie eat & we all wanted to know why & how did Maggie live to be 30yrs old??
Do you know why Rodney was so interested? well Rodney was in the middle of writing his 1st book "Forever Young", & he was traveling all around the world interviewing people, scientist what foods make our pets live longer etc
Maggies owner was a Milk farmer, the vet use to come when the cows needed seeing & the vet would see Maggie but the vet never kept Maggies vaccination paper work, vets didnt have computers back in the late 80's like we have now when dogs/cats are vaccinated it is all put on vets computer etc.
Maggie's age can't be verified because Brian says he lost the dog's paperwork when she was a puppy.
Brian McLaren says his youngest son, Liam, was four years old when they bought Maggie. He's now 34.
Maggie wasn't desexed until she was 14 yr old after she had fallen pregnant, a farm hand brought his new dog to work & Maggie had a great time.
Rodney trip to Australia included interview with Mr McLaren, it was all to help sell his new book that was coming out, of cause people wanted to know what was the secret Maggie living so long, it was simple-
It was genetics, & Maggie worked all her life rounding up the milk cows in the morning & again in the afternoon to be milked she was a working dog.
Maggie ate a raw diet, cooked & table scraps & Maggie ate baby calf placentas & when a baby calf died Maggie also ate the dead calf, she ate Good O's as treats, she drank 1 cup fresh milk straight from cow 6am & 6pm until the night she passes away in her sleep.
This was Rodney tease video - "Sign up to get instant and free access to Rodney Habib’s exclusive interview with Brian McLaren, & then to buy his new book that was due out end of the year. He tells people NOTHING.

I think she was speaking of a homemade raw meat diet, which is what I feed my animals. I would never feed my kitties hills

Teena, yes, I’m sure she was. The tragic thing is after moisture, she offered none of the proven dietary changes that help a renal patient. If you’d never feed Hills I would say you’re denying 7 decades of button research by top board certified nutritionists and the obvious results vets across the country and the world see every day. I guess I’m so passionate about it because I saw it for 34 years.

Trust the "experts" but when a veterinarian, practicing for 27 years has a different opinion, she is suddenly a YT kook. I have a lot of pictures on IG, of my cats eating fresh, whole, unadulterated, beautiful, good quality protein, in the form of fresh chicken, ground beef, salmon, skipjack tuna and sardines. Cats are designed to process organic substances. The synthetic waste products and the lack of moisture in commercial food are what cause kidney and pancreas issues. Most of the pet foods you and Dr. Rea review every week get a thumbs down for how bad they are with the nutrients. Dr. Becker said to reduce protein intake with stages 3 and 4. Human grade means my cats and I eat much of the same food that I buy from my local grocery store. All things being equal, feeding a healthy cat fresh food, or at least a quality wet cat food, should slow or mitigate kidney issues. Presuming everything you say is right and Dr. Becker is wrong, the ideal food, would be Hill's k/d wet cat food. The problem, it only comes in 2.9 oz. cans, which makes it too expensive for most people. Especially for those with more than one cat.

Based on a group I am in, whatever you feed that ‘works’ for your cat or dog is the best thing, should never be pushed into feeding what others say is best, do what works for your own pets always.

@@CocoonsLastHope Exactly. I would never tell someone what to feed their pet. Especially one with an health condition. I only post what my cats eat because one got sick a year ago and raw ground beef is the only thing she could eat for a long time. I switched them from commercial to homemade and they are both fine now. I also like to give Glenn a good natured, hard time.

I am by no means an expert. But it’s really unfortunate how these “so called” online pet experts are creating such a fear based approach to pet nutrition! All I can say is trust your Vet. Kidney Disease in cats is a serious ailment and should always be treated and monitored by a veterinary professional. This isn’t up for debate. Please don’t believe everything you hear on the internet and just trust your Vet.

Hey stranger, where ya been? you are absolutely right! to ask a pet parent to just go shopping for food or start researching supplements and home remedies when there is 75 years of studies and proven results with veterinary diets....makes me crazy! Like people want to play researcher or veterinarian!

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Hello Glenn! Nice to see you again as always. I hope you are doing well. 🤗
I am all for learning about pet nutrition, but when people are giving information that completely contradicts a Veterinarian that’s where I draw the line. Kidney Disease in our feline friends is no joke. It’s insidious and is often found in the later stages of renal failure. You cannot just give your cat any wet food on the market! Moisture doesn’t cure kidney disease! If it did the disease itself wouldn’t exist! These so called online pet nutritionists get on my nerves. The amount of false information they share with pet owners is dangerous!

@@edschulhof6303My childhood cat died of renal failure. We actually put her down because of the disease. I don’t trust her advice because it is the complete opposite of what my Vet told me to do. I trust my Vet more than anyone online as they actually see my pets and provide them with care, diagnostics, etc. You are welcome to trust anyone you want. That’s your prerogative. Enjoy your day! ☀️

Roza, the question was what to feed a renal cat, not how to prevent renal failure. Sure, feeding canned makes sense but she totally ignores the nutrients that matter. Not feeding trash really doesn’t help.
