at 5:00 I messed up and played the full chord instead of the maj 6 to dom 7 and i also played the full chord at 1st fret instead of the G and B strings. hahah I kind of zoned out and forgot where the heck I was really supposed to be. Lucky tho, they are the right notes just not the higher versions.
haha , well, you can hear me for sure on several places (I hit the top string too hard on that first big note at 1:56. You can hear the string go slightly sharp making a kind of chorus sound with Ty's original. But also some slides I added in that I knew weren't there but I just felt like adding them in. I guess I could have turned my guitar sound up a tad. One video someone said it was too synced and they couldn't tell so I reuploaded with JUST my guitar parts. hahaha thank ye!
I'm going to try! I think I'm going to make a chillout album next. Just put it on.... relax, chill, nothing loud or abrupt. I got one tune done that's really cool. Just nothing where you have to think too much.
Right now on this guitar, steel. The guitar is dark enough so I really need those to keep it brighter. It's kind of like a les paul but not as bright because the body wood just seems so dull. Maybe if I had an rg550 i might try nickel again like boomers or something. but these d'addario last for freaking ever. Haven't changed strings in like... 2 years?
If I ever get some spare cash, I might buy parts again and THIS TIME, the game will be different. I'll know what the eff I'm getting and how to put it together. well, have fun and good luck!
ah, that's the one where he plays all acoustic. yeah, no way I can play an acoustic and I have no piezo pickup to simulate it and no way I could play along with dude and that raucous strummy use all 4 fingers approach... just more than I can do at this point. I don't hear anything so technical that I couldn't physically do it except for my fingertips not being totally right. so, dat one is OUT! hahaha
weirdly, I've not done a real collab like playing a part and sending it digitally to someone and they add a part. I guess I'm unknown (or... unliked.. .sniff.... heheh)
ah, thank ye! You know, I LOVE trying to get the guitar parts as close as I can. But oddly not enough to look at any tabs. I guess I am old school and just try to learn it based on what I'm hearing. I know some like to ad lib and do their OWN version but I kind of always liked to do it exactly the same. I did throw a few ad libs in at that short solo section. hehe Yeah, playing with someone who plays the damn song correctly is nice. :)
Saw it a while back. W/o being able to bar with my index finger, it precludes half the stuff you'd want to play on guitar. :( but dat's life! I only bar rarely with index and then usually really carefully and for not very long. notice in this vid i am barring with my 3rd finger and sometimes #2 even when it would be advantageous to use the 1st finger.
gotta admit these videos are my guilty pleasure...so many people do shit jobs with covers, but you nail it every time...you're the kind of guitarist i love to jam with.
yeah, that may be true. I prob never would have made the connection but some little things click and you go hmmm that reminds me of this or that. I made a connection like that the other day. The line "savin' all my love.... savin' all my love... savin all my love - for you" in Whitney Houston's tune ( orig Marilyn McCoo's) was musically the same as in Prince's Still Waiting "waitin for the love... waitin for the love.. waitin for the love - too come around" exact same chords/time/melody.
I saw them once and they were cool. talked to Ty afterwards. Just for a few minutes. He was griping about the insane hum he was getting mostly due to the single coil pickups in his elite strat. I said I feel ya bro. heheh
I think my guitar has some dead spots. or the G string bridge saddle is not right. G string doesn't sustain good in upper frets. That kind of shit makes you play differently cuz you don't want to play the G string cuz it will just die off making you sound like an idiot. But.... with no $, I just keep on with what I have. Would love to have a Suhr axe. hehe prob $2000.
Nuno was da bomb back in those days. very VHish with way more polished picking and more tapping tricks than Ed but I loved me some Nuno back in the day. I have the 3 sides album. listen to it about once a year. hehe That brown guitar with the Bill Lawrence pickups... it was raw.
I think some people were "discovered" on YT like the Philippines guy who Journey got to replace their Steve clones. But doing a band is not easy. I certainly wouldn't even consider it now being 49 and really just happier doing my own thing. I'm kind of stubborn too. :)
I have funky dead spots in mine and some frets that are too low causing dull low volume notes. sucks but I just can't be bothered to yank those frets, install new ones, file to height and so on. I really should so I can get the strings just that much closer to the frets but oh well. I use .008 guage. really light.
thanks. man, at 4:53 you can hear my top strings going in a muted way cuz I didn't stop them fully. hahhaa I think some of my play-alongs people can't hear my guitar but it's just that I'm playing it mostly like the songs and trying to match the TONE also and not just overdo the volume either.
There are some double coils that are the size of a single coil and sound probably like a mix of both. There are also some that are dbl coil that sound more like single coils. I think Malmsteen had some made like that by DiMarzio but I'm not sure. I think I'd also consider something like that in the middle and neck positions so it would help cut down on noise and hum when using those positions.
like $40 for the body $240 for the neck and it used to have EMG pickups and the floyd rose cost me prob $200. So, that gives you an idea. it's got DiMarzio pus in it now. tone zone in bridge and air norton in neck. I like the passive pickups best. They have a touch more hum but a lot less high end hiss. and no battery to worry with. :)
I love the clean sound a strat can make. As long as I can have a double coil in the bridge I'll be pretty happy. I used to have a legit Strat. black with white pickguard. BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.... hehe yep.
nah. My fingers wouldn't allow that. I've watched several of his vids and dude is damn good. I just pick tunes I know I won't have to play any real bar chords or hurt my fingers. haha
just pressed way way WAY too hard on a big string at a bs dive gig in Mississippi. boom. there it is. bruised fingertip, crushed nerve, whatever. same thing later on other tips. 10 years I couldn't play.
Also, lower action means easier to play fast stuff and sound smoother (less time between notes). But smaller strings = more buzz and eaiser bends but a little harder to play consistently due to their ease of bending and moving when picked. So you have to figure what works best for what you like to play. I am weird in that I use .008 and really low action AND detuned a whole 2 frets. With a scalloped fretboard... prob few people could play in tune on it.
I remember watching that in a vid. But it takes me a few listens to remember stuff anymore. Watch too much and forget it all. I might can play it if he doesn't do too many real bar chords. I'll go watch it again and see if it's a lost cause. hahahh
Well, it's not always about name brands but about a kind of lower limit of quality. For me, I like a light body wood and jumbo frets (round tops). Low action and light gauge. But you be the judge! But it would be worth the $ to take it to a reputable luthier and get them to set it up properly if you don't know how.
just the idea that you have a lot of pu configurations to get diff sounds. Les Paul's have the two double coils. Someone decided to slap a single in between then later coil tapping allowed for that bridge double to be split into a single. So you can get a stratty sound AND Les Paul sound in one guitar. At the expense of a bit more drag on the strings from the magnets but if you keep em higher it's no big deal. Higher off the strings = better tone to a point.
They aren't solid nickel but the steel strings are solid steel as far as I known. The nickel coating makes them softer, obviously, as nickel isn't as hard as steel. I used to play Boomers but maybe I'll try some new strings sometime.
You have to go with what you like and what works best. For me, with fingertips soft like a baby's butt, I kind of have to go with .008 or I'll end up screwing them up again.
yeah, drop D but all of them are detuned 2 frets so drop C. And it's not as if I'm playing 3 hrs a day sweating on stage. I used to do that but more like 4 to 5 hrs a night. 4 or 5 nights a week. You won't get a week with nickel strings like that.
Great job! I listened to a bit of King's X back in the day (late 80's), don't remember this song though. Must be from one of their 90's albums. Good guitars.
Do you like steel or nickel strings? The steel last a hell of a lot longer and are brighter sounding but I think nickel feels a tad softer so iow, you get nickel and your bends prob feel easier but they wear out sooner. I've been using D'Addario 8s with a custom G of 14 instead of 15. Steel. Gives me a touch more brightness on that damned plank I call a guitar.
most rock guys use .009s or .010s as you prob know. .011 is a little heavy but just whatever you like. Also depends on your scale length. Strats are longer than les pauls. I wonder what gauge jimmy page used? I'd guess 8s or 9s. thin for a les paul.
yeah, you can get them really close tho by either paying a lot of $ to someone to build it or just buy parts you know are what you like and build yourself. I bought these back b4 I really knew much about guitar construction/sound. So, I really kind of prefer a strat feel and sound. Just don't like the strat shape neck, laquer finish, small frets. Just like the maple neck and light body wood. and shape.
Already learned how to setup a guitar because of youtube and such. Honestly i didn't look at brand when i picked that guitar, i looked for sound that would work great for me and fender strats blew my mind.
I don't know king's X particularly well but I could hear you just fine. I love the main riff, sounds a little like my favourite riff from RHCP 'Sexy Mexican Maid'.
His songs in King's X have a kind of darkness about them. But they also have a kind of hope too. so, there's a little push/pull going on and I think that can make for some decent ideas. ha, they used autotune on the singer and the guitarist overdubbed his parts after the fact but it sounded really nice. Dude can play. My guitar isn't really set up for standard tuning stuff and I never learned any DT (actually just never got interested in it). You kind of wonder... does anyone meet on YT and then go on to BE a band?
They also have rosewood necks (which i will take). i'm interesting in constructing one but it seems like it will need alot of time and i aint got that.
yeah, it's easier up higher. looks less cool but hey, the music should be more important than how you look but... I always had my guitar up a little higher. my fretting hand loves me for it. hehe
prob just something like an RG 550 and maybe w/o a vibrato bar. Just a kind of strat style with some dbl coils and single in the middle and coil tap 5 way switch.
That's one of the only problems that I have with metal in general after the late 80's. I miss the fiery solos. Sure, some bands still do it and do it well, but it's only a handful.
i'm working on a style which combines progressive metal and blues. Thanks for the tips! When my boss finally pays me i will buy a blacktop stratocaster with a floyd rose! getting sick and tired of budget guitars.
Some consider them a christian band, I don't. If they're christian then they sure do question their religion a lot. I'm an atheist and I LOVE their music. Best 3 man band ever.
doubles are awesome but i guess for my next guitar i'm searching for something with single coils. I'll keep my HH guitars though, i feel like jazz works better on those boys.
Honestly i never got whats so exciting about HSH configuration. (but hey who knows never played it myself). I'm going for a SS configuration but with a P90 in the bridge.
hmmm maybe your nut is too high? if your strings are low when you fret them but open they are higher, that might lead to more volume than you want on open strings. I have my nut absolutely as low as it could go (basically, your nut should be fret 0). But it CAN be a little higher than a fret 0 would be but ideally not much. It also helps the intonation if it is roughly equal to what a fret would be there if you had another fret instead of the nut.
Well, just heard SMM and I don't hear the resemblance other than it's in the key of E minor and this one in the key of D minor (a step lower since he detuned his top string to D). You sure you got the right song? hahahha I've never been into RHCP. I think they were just starting to be known to me back around 1995 or something. But I was too busy doing my own music at the time.
lol, I was just thinking this would be an awesome song to improvise over, it filled my head with far too many idea's, couldn't keep track XP I'm also tempted to go out and buy a new guitar (had to sell my good one a few months back; house comes first >=(
very cool man. I like to play along to guitar as well, I want to introduce you to something extreme. You might not like it overall but you will definitely appreciate the guitar and talent involved....oh and the beard!!!. It's a band called Battlecross, song called push pull destroy. Look up the video, who knows you might like it. They call it blue collar thrash metal \m/ I am in the process of learning it. so awesome
I'm just now reuploading another version (same thing just with my guitar track turned up so you can hear it better).
at 5:00 I messed up and played the full chord instead of the maj 6 to dom 7 and i also played the full chord at 1st fret instead of the G and B strings. hahah I kind of zoned out and forgot where the heck I was really supposed to be. Lucky tho, they are the right notes just not the higher versions.

thanks. It's a challenge trying to nail that end section w/o messing up. I always have to count to 5 1/2 on that one hit. haha else I'll blow it.
Thank ye. No solo on this one! haha It's from Faith Hope Love. I think that is the 3rd one.
If I ever get some spare cash, I might buy parts again and THIS TIME, the game will be different. I'll know what the eff I'm getting and how to put it together. well, have fun and good luck!
The Darwin look? hahhahaha do it! But I need to take some steroids and bulk up. hehe
ah, that's the one where he plays all acoustic. yeah, no way I can play an acoustic and I have no piezo pickup to simulate it and no way I could play along with dude and that raucous strummy use all 4 fingers approach... just more than I can do at this point. so, dat one is OUT! hahaha
Thank ya. I started playing guitar in 1974. 10 year layoff from 2000 to 2010 roughly. started to tinker again a couple years ago.
weirdly, I've not done a real collab like playing a part and sending it digitally to someone and they add a part. I guess I'm unknown (or... unliked.. .sniff.... heheh)

I used to like Ace Frehley's Les Paul that had the 3 dbl coils in it. It just looked so cool to me back in the late 70s.

Man, that was a sick rendition! I enjoyed that immensely.

yep. did it myself. it's not perfect but it works just the same.
Yeah, it almost seems that a song w/o a solo in there is just part of a song. haha
Hellbent, hellbent for LEATHEEEEEEEEEER! :)
You are the most effortless guitarist I think I've ever seen. Your so synced up with the tape, I'm having a tough time even hearing you.
There are some double coils that are the size of a single coil and sound probably like a mix of both. There are also some that are dbl coil that sound more like single coils. hmmm could be. The Night They Killed Santa. hmmmm Or Santa Wanks At Midnight. hmmmmmm Santa Claus His Way Out. hnmmmm could be!

so, 30 years.
That was awesome, just spot on.
You have to go with what you like and what works best. For me, with fingertips soft like a baby's butt, I kind of have to go with .008 or I'll end up screwing them up again.
As someone who uses fuzz. i like it on medium where it does not make it sound too soft nor does it fuck up the guitars acoustic sound.
Next strings i'll buy will be .009s (btw i hate to work in inch), now my fingers are used to "the worst".
thanks
thanks!
I've always been a distortion freak so I (to my detriment) run my gain too high most of the time. hehehhe oh well.
Awesome beard.. ooh good playing also!
yeah, drop D but all of them are detuned 2 frets so drop C. And it's not as if I'm playing 3 hrs a day sweating on stage. I used to do that but more like 4 to 5 hrs a night. 4 or 5 nights a week. You won't get a week with nickel strings like that.

I'm..... gagging... over here..... get it? gagging? HEHEHE HOEOHOHOEHEO hahah
oh, da doomp TSHHHHHH
He'll be here all year, folks!

Yea strats make amazing clean sounds, thats why i never put my effect pedals too high.
most rock guys use .009s or .010s as you prob know. .011 is a little heavy but just whatever you like. Also depends on your scale length. Strats are longer than les pauls. I wonder what gauge jimmy page used? I'd guess 8s or 9s. thin for a les paul.
I play .011's btw. But i guess i'll switch back to some thinner strings. Today is payday for me, so i'm probably gonna order my fender next week! :)
since about 1983.
yeah, you can get them really close tho by either paying a lot of $ to someone to build it or just buy parts you know are what you like and build yourself. I bought these back b4 I really knew much about guitar construction/sound. So, I really kind of prefer a strat feel and sound. Just don't like the strat shape neck, laquer finish, small frets. Just like the maple neck and light body wood. and shape.

Excellent!
I don't know king's X particularly well but I could hear you just fine. I love the main riff, sounds a little like my favourite riff from RHCP 'Sexy Mexican Maid'.
odd, McCoo's song came out in 1978. Prince's.... 1979. COINCIDENCE? you be the judge.
Lots of clapping. That was great; thank you.
fuckin fun as hell, as usual. Liking the beard progress too. Love yer vids, keep'em coming.
His songs in King's X have a kind of darkness about them. But they also have a kind of hope too. so, there's a little push/pull going on and I think that can make for some decent ideas. I'd love too build one in the future though!
prob just something like an RG 550 and maybe w/o a vibrato bar. Just a kind of strat style with some dbl coils and single in the middle and coil tap 5 way switch.
First? haha I look like Charles Darwin jammin. hehhehe
It's almost like hearing it for the first time, again.
:) Nice.
What types of scenes do yo need?
thank yuns
Fine fine job!!!!!!!!
thanks!
That's one of the only problems that I have with metal in general after the late 80's. I miss the fiery solos. Sure, some bands still do it and do it well, but it's only a handful.
The nickel plating indeed makes them softer. however i feel like i get the best sound out of strings when they are nickel plated.
I was!
Good stuff!
thank ya! not sure what all i want but I can msg you the stuff I think i want.
so, how have your guitar playing days been going? I remember we chatted a bit in the past about stuff and was it Steve Vai's studio you played in?
I'm more going for something like a fender, but with a lil warmer and heavier feeling
i'm working on a style which combines progressive metal and blues.
I guess that tune was a natural selection ....
Niiice...!
10 years? man i feel like dying after not playing one day!
You sure you got the right song? hahahha I've never been into RHCP. I think they were just starting to be known to me back around 1995 or something. But I was too busy doing my own music at the time.
And i could not find a guitar in and out of my pricerange which was how i wanted it. soooo ill just make my own guitar.
drop D. just detune your top string by 2 frets from E to D. then you can do the bar chord sound w/one finger on top 3 strings.
lol, I was just thinking this would be an awesome song to improvise over, it filled my head with far too many idea's, couldn't keep track XP
I'm also tempted to go out and buy a new guitar (had to sell my good one a few months back; house comes first >=(
very cool man. I like to play along to guitar as well, I want to introduce you to something extreme. You might not like it overall but you will definitely appreciate the guitar and talent involved....oh and the beard!!!. It's a band called Battlecross, song called push pull destroy. Look up the video, who knows you might like it. They call it blue collar thrash metal \m/ I am in the process of learning it. so awesome
Sounds a lot like Nuno Bettoncourt/Extreme/Pornograffiti. Very cool!
