- 📜 History of Catherine the Great, Part 5
Catherine had many lovers during her life, but perhaps none meant so much to her as Grigory Potemkin. Although their romance did not last a lifetime, it did form the basis of a working relationship that would change the face (and future) of Europe.

If Potemkin was your neighbour, I feel like he'd be the one who'd borrow your hammer and give you a tool set back.
A tool set not including a hammer.
...only if your swore an alliance to him, otherwise he'd sack your house ; p
William Heayn
Are there Potemkin shirts yet?
Just so long as he doesn't build you a house (Potemkin villages and all that…)!
William Heayn it's funny how many of the great people of that age were also deeply corrupt (Potemkin, Arakcheev, Menshikov), yet emperors always forgave them for their bravery on the battlefield and/or other successes, while for other less successful corrupt officials punishment was death

No.

In a word, all my passions have been sated. I am entirely happy!"
He definitely sounds like an interesting guy to know. A true personality. For everything that he is, good or ill, he was certainly no historical mediocrity.
Borderose Sounds like he would be perfect as a Drifter. I imagine he would be the Octobrist's chief strategist, getting along with both Seimei, and Shimazu.
Potemkin's jealousy and paranoia concerning his romantic position with Catherine, yet fervourous loyalty to her, is so relateable it hits too close to home.

The history book truly keeps on repeating itself.
Those Who Do Not Learn History Are Doomed To Repeat It
Why do I fear we will learn that lesson all too well in the coming years...
and it keeps getting repeated because people don't learn it, warp it, or bury it. like how Germany likes to keep burying and censoring all their history about Hitler and the Third Reich.
edit: in videogames i mean
Which Germany have you been looking at? In modern Germany the rise and fall of the Third Reich, the horrors of nazism, the reasons why something like this must never happen again and the scourge of neo-nazis are discussed in excruciating detail in schools. Whole swaths of political activists do nothing else but protest neo-nazis routinely gathering crowds several times than the demonstrations they protest. And publicly saying something reminiscent of Hitler's or NSDAP ideology is political suicide.
So either get your facts straight, express them properly if you already have them straight or shut the fuck up if you are unwilling or unable to do any of the above.

Georgia was not annexed by Catherine, she only made a protection pact with them. I hope it will be adressed in "Lies".
Is that what the Russians called it? ;P
Vyletongue +
Jeez, read a book, or at least a Wiki article.
And yes , a protection treaty and a protectorate are not the same thing.
As for the annexetion of Georgia, In Russia we call it "saving the unthankful Georgians" (too onesided to my taste, but essentially true considering their pleas, a muslim threat, a civil war threat and the fact that there was no such a thing as Georgia, but rather a bunch of feodal fiefs locked in constant coflict)
Carewolf, just google it, the sh*t that chechens were doing there and why Georgia ASKED Catherine to take them under her wing isn't as simple as shown here(which is actually wrong).
Vyletongue
Georgia did have two states at the time and the ruler of Kartli-Kakheti was possibly more able and a stronger ruler than Catherine herself. The protection pact was a prelude to the annexation which happened right after the able and great king of Kartli-Kakheti passed away.
Considering how you oppressed Georgian culture and nationality after annexation, it *is* natural that Georgians are unthankful.
Grigory Potemkin, a man after my own heart. Most of those qualities listed about him are either qualities I possess or wish I possessed.

Relationship goals: Potemkin & Catherine
It's funny how kings and empresses act alike. With Louis XVI, he hated his wife, the Queen of France, but saw as his total equal his smart, religiously devout mistress--the Madame de Maintenon. With Louis XV, he also deeply disliked his wife, also the Queen of France, but got along fabulously with his intelligent, witty mistress, the Madame de Pompadour. In both instances kings and mistresses were inseparable, and considered each other confidantes and best friends. With Pompadour, Louis XV also lost his sexual attraction to her. But that just deepened the great friendship and love they had for each other. Interesting that Catherine had the same with Potemkin.
Madame the Pompadour was a greater hero, than any of the Louis's had ever been.
Luboman411 "religiously devout"
How religiously devout can one be when being someone's mistress, though?
You mean Louis XIV not Louis XVI he actually liked his wife. Too bad about his head.

I’ve had numerous relationships after I sadly broke up with her and I will proudly say I have a good relationship with my boyfriend of 1 year but this girl would always have space reserved for her in my heart. She will always be special to me and I could say she is the love of my life.

I think there may be a mistake regarding Georgia. Catherine wanted an alliance with Georgia ("The Russian empress Catherine the Great was keen to have the Georgians as allies in her wars against the Turks and Persians, but sent only meagre forces to help them.") and her son Paul expanded the border after her death in 1796 as stated on Wikipedia:
"After Giorgi's [king of Georgia, aka Giorgi XII] death on 28 December 1800, the kingdom was torn between the claims of two rival heirs, Davit and Iulon. However, Tsar Paul I of Russia had already decided neither candidate would be crowned king. Instead, the monarchy would be abolished and the country administered by Russia.[11] He signed a decree on the incorporation of Kartli-Kakheti into the Russian Empire[12][13] which was confirmed by Tsar Alexander I on 12 September 1801."

Incorrect. Catherine has little to do with current situation with Crimea. Khrushchev, in other hand...
I think of it this way, Catherine got the ball rolling, Khrushchev is the one who turned it into a massive avalanche.
What an interesting little series! It does, however, directly contradict another fascinating documentary of Catherine The Great in which she is shown as the one needing constant declarations of love and undying devotion from Potemkin and wanting to be with him 24/7 to the point that it seems he nearly came to loathe the sight of her (not really, but still... Having an insecure leech on you like that would be emotionally draining). This series says it's the opposite and that it is Potemkin who was clinging, needy and suspicious. Perhaps it was BOTH of them and that caused the ultimate breakdown of their romance, but not so their friendship, loyalty and an even greater love than mere romance implies...

You should do a vid on the Bronze Age collapse.
Xbuttx Z There's not much information on that period, because you know, the whole societal collapse thing.
+Merritt Animation I'm interested in it because it is not as well known compared to the Fall of the Roman Empire. Some Historians even said that this event is more calamitous by comparison. It saw the destruction of Bronze Age civilizations such as the Hittites and the Mycenaeans. The Mycenaeans that survived resorted to Piracy and became known as "the sea peoples." The Bronze Age collapse also saw the end of the New Kingdom period of Egypt but Israel and Mesopotamia were left unscathed. The chaos at the end of this period set the stage for the classical period of Ancient Greece and eventually Rome.
+Xbuttx Z most of what we know comes from Anatolia and Egypt.
Hasn't they said that's something they want to do, but it's really hard with so little information.
Xbuttx Z We don't know where the Sea Peoples came from. They may have been Mycenaean, but that's far from a confirmed fact. As has been stated here, there is too little evidence from the Late Bronze Age Collapse to confirm much. Nevertheless, I too would like to see a series or episode on it, but that's decided on Patreon.
