Economy is bad everywhere. The uniqueness of China is that for the last about 45 years, China's economy has always been fast growing, and most Chinese people probably did not experience a slowed-down economy.
That's not exactly true. They have already faced many economic crisis since 1949. A Chinese economist wrote a book about it aptly named 10 crises. During Deng's time there was one period where inflation hit 25%. Like the lady in the video says the economy got its ups and downs.
What I got out of this video: China pretty much has the same problems as every other country. Bad economy is a worldwide problem, not just in China. Chinese youth understands the general economy, what employers are looking for, and why some people finds it hard to find certain jobs. Chinese youth answers questions with logic, capable of critical thinking, direct and to the point. Chinese people freely express themselves for the most part.
Yeah, and at the same time, none of them blame the one person who is at fault for all of this, Xi Jinping. Unfortunately, the resentment will grow, and it is dangerous that it may result in serious upheavals.
Obviously COVID was a complicating factor but 2022 had a lot of the vibe of 2008-09 in the US except no one seemed to talk about it yet. Now it’s more openly discussed and further progressed so in some ways like 2013. As other commenters have hinted though young people have very little frame of reference. College students rarely have had jobs before graduation which also shifts perceptions I think.
It's not even close. The closest comparison would be US 2009 when the unemployment rate was going up. By 2013, the unemployment rate had been a steady decline.
What's funny is Americans are going onto Little Red Book app now and learnt that the purchasing power of 1 Yuan = 1 dollar in the USA. To call an ambulance in China only costs 30 Yuan for the elderly. A Chinese posted his monthly bills with an American and showed that he only needed to pay 70 USD per month to cover rent (apartment with 2 balconies and 2 rooms), utilities and internet etc etc. The internet speed is 1 GBPS. That American guy said that 70 USD is the costs of rent in LA for only A DAY 😅😅😅
In Australia, it costs 100 AUD per month to get 1 MBPS of slow turtle internet speed of mobile data IN THE CITY. I PAID FOR THAT BEFORE 😅😅 Somehow Western countries are better than China in quality of life? Costco buys cheap Chinese goods and sell them to Americans. 😢😢😂🎉🎉

I have never heard anyone say that the economy is all well and good, and everyone is happy with no one left behind. At any point in time, great jobs are lost and subsequently created. It really depends on where your skillsets are and whether you remain nimble enough to foresee and pivot. A good example is the creation of AI-related roles, which is driving much of the growth now. If you're well versed in it, you will probably think the economy cannot be better than what it is now. The reverse applies.
"Less consumption" I think the world need to put a break of reckless consumption. We are over consuming everything that we really don't need. It might be bad for businesses and economy in the short run, but it could be could good in general in the long run. Overconsumption has many negative effects, including: Environmental damage: - Deforestation - Toxic pollution - Climate change - Species extinction - Air pollution - Loss of wildlife - Soil and water pollution - Biodiversity loss Health issues: Increased healthcare costs Mental health issues Weight gain and obesity Increased risk of cancer and other chronic health problems Social problems: Crime Domestic violence Social unrest Economic issues: Lost output due to withdrawal from work . Etc.
These economy matter not only appear in China, economical matters decline in all parts of the world, all nations are facing the same. Just the matter who is worst and who is bad. That's the only difference.
The current job market in China is simiar to when US in 2009. Jobs in most fields are very hard to find. Lots of wages are actually going lower year over year as too many new graduates willing to accept less.
I don't think this video touches the real problem of a slow economy. Just ask as few young Chinese about the economy of China is like to feel the person's body temperature by touching a strand of his hair! In Britain many high streets (the busiest street of a town or city) have half of the shops permanently close but the western media never report it. The shop closure started more than a decade ago and the magnitude is increasing. Even in London shopping malls one can see shops close down and the premises papered up to hide the vacancies.
Chinese economy is not as good as ten years ago, sure, but it's far better than what the media portrait it in West, that is without any doubt. European economy is in a far more dire situation, while American economy is in a artificially hyperinflated situation.
you do realize this is in a first tier city and perhaps the richest first tier city which had a large foreign population until they left. most of CCP china is impoverished the moment you leave the first tier cities
Nope, China's economy is far far worse than it's being portrayed in 'The West' (whatever you think that is?) and Europe is just fine, SE Asia is really growing and the USA is on an upward swing. None of these can be compared to Mainland China which is now in full severe, game-changing, economic collapse.
@@Cryosxify they may even realize that but they are being told (or are told to say to foreigners) that the dirty USA is far worse and Europe is far worse and actually the whole world is in economic downturn and that China is actually smiling as it gets through better than most anyone else, esp. the USA that is jealous of China.
The economy is always a combination of several factors: - personal situation - company situation - government policies - global trade situation. It is clear that the new US administration may ruin the latter, so trade with the US does not have a bright future. Depending on governments around the world the situation may offer alternatives. But local government may also be a problem. A good example is the EU who is doing everything to prevent business development in Europe. In China it seems that many companies who benefitted from world trade options in the past are now suffering because they have not prepared for alternatives in time.
Don’t worry. Layoff is a norm. If china has so many layoff workers, most other countries have also witnessed high percentage of unemployment too. Unless you are working for the government or self employed, most of us will be out of job tomorrow. Go to Indonesia, India and in Europe , chronic unemployment among the population is high. Yes its about saving money these days... even if I have more income, still I like to compare prices and like to buy discount things. Saving more money for the future. So when bad days come, my family can be prepared.
The entire global economy is bad due to inflation, but the living standards in China are still comparatively better than the West because they don't have to rely on foreign manufacturing. They are fully self-sustainable; all of their basic consumer goods can be produced domestically. The whole world is essentially dependent on Chinese imports. A downturn in consumer spending normally signals a recession, but there will always be sectors that are more or less immune. There will always be a consistent need for qualified tradespeople regardless of consumer sentiment. Same goes for the grocery sector or medicine. The college degree has become the new high school diploma now that so many people have them. This gives employers more leverage to demand higher and higher credentials while suppressing wages. A couple of generations ago, only the best and brightest attended college. Now, it's an expectation that everyone attends. It's lost a lot of its bargaining power. The thing with content creation is that only a small minority at the top actually make a decent living. The rest make virtually nothing. And if your goal is to become a streamer or an "influencer," saddling yourself with student debt doesn't seem like a wise investment unless you only plan on doing it as a side hustle. The paradox of many of the entry-level white-collar jobs is that employers expect candidates to have years of work experience, so the applicants who get hired are usually people who have already spent time in the workforce and are accepting a position of underemployment out of scarcity. Fresh graduates are essentially forced to intern for free to gain work experience or be relegated to jobs that don't require a degree. Brutal. The harsh reality is that most college graduates end up working in jobs that are unrelated to their field of study. Unless you're studying something pre-professional, such as engineering or nursing, you'll be forced to take whatever job you can find out of necessity. Speaking of practical skills, the Chinese education system could benefit from matching students with their strengths and interests rather than insisting that everyone enroll in higher education. Not everyone needs to graduate from a 4-year university to be able to make a decent living. But the Chinese emphasis on credentialism is a huge roadblock. We're told by our institutions that the definition of success is getting a high-paying job and having the means to buy a bunch of nice things, but that's not what gives people meaning and purpose in the long run. Your friends, family, and the relationships you develop are what comprise a fulfilling life, not living in a big mansion or driving a fancy car. Chasing materialism is a great way to make you unhappy because you'll never be satisfied.
I completely agree. Their products are very affordable and of decent quality. Even after purchasing online and paying for shipping and taxes to send them to my country, they are still cheaper compared to local options.
Was in China last 3 weeks, I think Materialistically Chinese are doing better than ever due to affordable prices and great selection of quality products and services. I felt that alot of modern measurement methodology does not reflect that or have the wrong weight to it.
Nope, much of the worlds economy is fine, 'The West' is far far better than Mainland China. But so is most of the rest of teh world as China is having a severe economic collapse that is uniquely China.
Your comment are contradictory at the very least. You claim China fares better off than "the West" because they have self-reliant manufacturing, while trumpeting the idea that consumerism and material (yes, it is manufacturing) greed make us unhappy. China manufactures far more than the world and China itslef can absorb, thus the vicious cycle of deflation in which price keeps trending down and business makes loss to cover their finished products. As a result, layoff follows and wage stagnates, which in its turn fuels the deflationary cycle. Look at Japan to see what havoc deflation wreaks on an economy over time.
Really? I've been travelling southern China for the past two months and all I've seen is a lot of young people on vacations and traveling. Everywhere I've been construction and infrastructure improvements are taking place. Night Markets are full of people spending money. The hospitality sector is seeing huge investments. I'm currently in Xishuangbanna and witnessing lots of Hotel renovations and new buildings and lots of young people vacationing in the warm weather. When has there ever been young people who can't find work or young people who are always able to find the job they want? Making mountains out of mole hills is a past time I guess.
Around 60% of those young people you saw are unemployed or some are 'under-employed' and they've given up much hope of finding jobs. Everywhere you go you're seeing leftover construction projects that started many years ago and were done to 'bloat the GDP' (actually this did work for a while!) and run massive real esate money games which have since collapsed. Now their finishing 'bridges to where' and 'hotels for nobody'. Yes indeed, northerners, mostly party members these days, they can get very cheap flights and hotels in Southern China this year. Most of those young people don't have jobs (hence you see so many). China is sometimes seen in '3s'. by the 3rd month you see past the tourist level. "OHHH.. oh wait THAT is why and what I'm looking at okay...". If you did stay 3 years a new layer reveals itself and 'OHHHH shhht... okay now I realize the bigger picture behind all this". but enjoy your time now. Actually i kind of envy that, I miss that, I wish I could go back to those first few months of traveling around!

I think bad and good is quite misleading. If it is judged by how easy it is to get a job, then yes, the last decade has been fantastic. I have seen people change job every year because its so easy to find jobs. Is this normal? of course not. The last decade are economic boom let by real estate. In early stage of economic growth, real estate boom is useful because poor countries need infrastructure and rapid improvement in living condition when urbanizing. However, when the cities are already built, all the the excess supply and speculation is extremely unhealthy for the economy. China realize this partly thanks to the US sanctions. A fat property sector that provides many jobs is not going to help China in winning the tech war initiated by the US. It is at that point that the country must switch to survival/war time footing in securing its self reliance rather than continuing to expand the economy at all cost. The real estate has been sucking too many capitals and talent. They need to switch the capital flow towards high tech manufacturing and R&D. After the crackdown, there are many layoff at real estate related business as the weaker ones goes bust. The bust scares off investors and cause investment slump. People feel less secure for the economy and stop spending and buying. Consumer goods and restaurants starts to feel the pinch and went into price war. The looser goes bust and cause more layoff. Spending tightens even further. However, this isn't new to the Chinese economy. During economic reforms in the 90s there are also many layoffs of state owned enterprise employees. Later, these people were forced to reinvent themselves and became entrepreneur out of necessity. We are seeing similar things now. Many of the layed off people took temporary jobs and reinvent themselves to adapt to the new normal. Many became social media influencers selling their own product online. The capital that used to flow into real estate has no choice but to flow into the high tech manufacturing sector. We are seeing Chinese high tech product dominating the world now as the investment is beginning to bear fruit. I don't know about you, but the new economy based on high tech is much more sustainable than real estate bubble.

It's actually not that bad, more people are spending money. The job market is much more selective as industries are transforming from labour to automation.
Asian Boss is very selective in who they interview because if too many people say the same thing (economy is good and future is bright) then it wouldn't have quite the same viewership.
From what I gleam from the factory jobs going away way before Lunar New Year, many migrant workers depend on the menial labor jobs. Automation will hurt many workers.
@@theasianjaywalker4455 Nope. Real estate industry has stabilised, core industries are emerging particularly EVs, consumer tech and infrastructure development which will be around for a long time as long as there are developing countries worldwide. The service industry is also going to be huge for China as local brands are exported worldwide. Haidilao, Hey Tea etc. are just some of the franchises that are getting started.
@@Charvo75 Last year was rough because in my area, they finally fully closed the Foxxconn factory the final work day of the Lunar New Year. Now, it WAS expected to come inevitably but it was still a downer for the 1500 last remaining empoyees. Worse than that was the Tire Factory that had them move their 'zombie cars' saying it was a 'fire hazard' (a forest fire in the rain really did happen here and it really was parked cars), but i digress, the 3000 workers did not learn that the factory was closed, their jobs gone until AFTER they went home for the Spring Festival. So basically they were kind of 'tricked' into leaving and finding out smack in the middle of the festival. btw i know this because for the many suddenly homeless newly laid off people they made a deal to give them x-months rent in my community. years ago they also closed down all the after-school training centers over Spring Festival too. Hence, I think this is why it's now spoken about like a 'doom'. like some impending job loss coming everyone's way.
Hi curious question? Do a lot of people refer to age in reference to the chinese New Year or more of the traditional calendar New years i.e., the one who said she will be a certain age after the chinese new year?
Depends on the region. I think in rural areas more people use CNY age, and the count starts at 2 (when you are born you are counted as 2 years old since you are "starting your 2nd year" as you already spent 10 months in pregnancy). In Beijing/Shanghai people just use the traditional calendar age
China has huge unemployment among its young population which is normal due to the fact it has 1.4 billion population. If China makes 1/3 of all goods in the world with $1 trillions trade surplus a year and is still having a huge unemployment issue , just imagine its neighbors India with even more population and make essentially 1/10 of what China economy is making, what is the percentage of its population have no job. Unemployment is simple, too many working population expects more unemployment and few resources. That is why the world population is less the better !
unfortune happen everywhere not only just china, even western country have problem too as well cause of the trade-war tariff which make every-job become so sacred nowday. the pandemic bankrupt most the gov budget and business as well. then you have war ongoing that even cost even more money to global market to import goods. i think china will get back to normal once all settle with other country market.
Nope, most of the world is doing fine. The 'Western' are doing well and they don't have any problems because of Tariffs put on China or Russia. But China is having a very severe economic collapse.
At 2:03 you spoke to a man who was very optimistic. You then asked him a negative question including the phrase, "especially given the decline of the global economy", at which point he turned quite negative. In 2024 global GDP growth was estimated at 3.2% (OECD) compared to 3.1% in 2023 and is also projected to reach 3.3% in 2025. So you effectively told him a lie to get his reaction. Why? This channel is interesting in that you have access to people that most in the west don't get to hear from, but then you use this to promote a message instead of trying to educate. I wish you would reconsider what you're trying to accomplish.
Whenever they make videos in China they always get positive opinions that contrast whatever the title question is. For example if tltled: “How bad are the covid lockdowns in china?” They’ll only get people downplaying it and saying its so great while pointing at “the west” for small things
Good luck to everyone all over the world. I have a feeling that we will need it for the next few years. And it's not just because of particular leaders being elected in particular places. Maybe I'm overestimating it, but I didn't see a single one of them mentioned the threat of depopulation on societies around the world. Seems like that would be a problem.
The whole world economy is gloomy and most people are not looking to switch jobs due to uncertain US foreign policies. And also whether US will attack Iran and cause the whole world economies to crash
China's GDP growth rate was 5.2% in 2023, and the government has set an ambitious target of 5% growth for 2024. While this is a slowdown compared to previous years, it still represents significant growth. Domestic demand remains soft, and there are concerns about weak business confidence and tepid productivity growth. This unbalanced growth, with supply outstripping demand, is a challenge. The Chinese government is focusing on boosting growth through innovation, education, digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. They are also investing in green technologies like electric vehicles and clean energy. China's share of global manufacturing output is about 30%, and its policies and subsidies in sectors like electric vehicles, semiconductors, and solar energy are influencing global markets. Experts believe that new avenues of growth, such as artificial intelligence, digital financial services, and green technologies, will be critical for sustaining China's economic development.
Nobody believes China is experiencing 5% GDP growth and especially not Mainland Chinese. Even worse, such 'growth' is still on unfinished 'fuer dai dream projects' like 1997 Japanese bullet trains that are sucking up 5% of the nations economy and will cost a billion bowls of rice to keep maintained. We are not looking at some 'challenges' but full-scale economic collapse has already begun and there is no way to stop it. People in China's mainland (PRC) now need to start thinking of ways to protect their safety and be careful about their social status, party membership and where they might be when it gets much worse.

Overconsumption has many negative effects, including:
Environmental damage:
- Deforestation
- Toxic pollution
- Climate change
- Species extinction
- Air pollution
- Loss of wildlife
- Soil and water pollution
- Biodiversity loss
Health issues:
Increased healthcare costs
Mental health issues
Weight gain and obesity
Increased risk of cancer and other chronic health problems
Social problems:
Crime
Domestic violence
Social unrest
Economic issues:
Lost output due to withdrawal from work . Etc.
These economy matter not only appear in China, economical matters decline in all parts of the world, all nations are facing the same. Just the matter who is worst and who is bad. That's the only difference.
That's not true. The whole world is not facing this same issue.

Thanks for this video. I watched so many videos of places in china but this one differs in that people are asked about the economy.

@@theasianjaywalker4455 you mean countries stuggle to get 0% GDP growth are fine, and the one who has 5% GDP growth is far far far worse? right.
The economy is always a combination of several factors:
- personal situation
- company situation
- government policies
- global trade situation.
China has 1.4 billions people, there is no way everyone gets a job.

As a young person in China, I feel sad that these people have such a shallow understanding of what’s happening with the economy
How about you? What do you think?
Eggs are expensive in California. 😂

From what I gleam from the factory jobs going away way before Lunar New Year, many migrant workers depend on the menial labor jobs. Automation will hurt many workers.
@@theasianjaywalker4455 Nope. The service industry is also going to be huge for China as local brands are exported worldwide. Haidilao, Hey Tea etc. are just some of the franchises that are getting started.

不,那是一位前瞻者。
Experts believe that new avenues of growth, such as artificial intelligence, digital financial services, and green technologies, will be critical for sustaining China's economic development.
we all know the CCP reports false numbers

The people u interviewed are middle-class or even richer and they r from the most developed cities. How many Chinese people can afford to travel abroad every year and they have SOME HOUSE to rent. God Damn Ridiculous!
Good point. If these middle class or rich folks are struggling, how is the rest of China doing?
You are the one who is ridiculous. Can't you check the data? In 2024, the number of Chinese outbound travelers was 291 million. The home ownership rate of urban households in China was 96.0%. The proportion of households with one house was 58.4%, the proportion of households with two houses was 31.0%, and the proportion of households with three or more houses was 10.5%.
@@animalworldtv9220 R u Chinese? I can't imagine such a thing can be taken by a Chinese person. Do u know how many families spend all their money and take a heavy debt that is why Chinese spending is always weak. Householding count can't say anything. u can also check how low the housing rental-to-sale ratio in China is.
