Why Shane van Gisbergen can be a NASCAR superstar! Fast Talk

  • Michael McDowell won the Verizon 200 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway but the story behind the story was an influx of international talent competing in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Seven different countries were represented in the Verizon 200, including Chicago street race winner Shane van Gisbergen. The New Zealand Supercar ace was joined by V8 Supercar points leader Brodie Kostecki, who raced for Richard Childress Racing.
NASCAR also welcomed Japanese touring car star Kamui Kobayashi in the 23XI No. 67, plus former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button and German sports car driver Mike Rockenfeller. Not to mention NASCAR Cup Series regular Daniel Suarez, who is from Mexico.
In this clip from Fast Talk presented by Toyota, Doug Rice, Alexis Erickson and Alan Cavanna discuss the importance of growing NASCAR's audience abroad with international drivers and why the Next Gen racing platform makes it easier for outsiders to have a real shot at winning in NASCAR.
Plus, we discuss Shane van Gisbergen's oval racing debut in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and Doug tells us why he believes van Gisbergen would immediately become a NASCAR fan favorite should he compete in the U.S. on a full-time basis. And while Shane van Gisbergen didn't win at Indianapolis, our panel agrees that a solid top-10 finish legitimized SVG's win on the Chicago street course as more than a fluke result. #NASCAR #Racing #Motorsport

The commentators hit the nail on the head in saying how drivers from other countries increase the interest of the sport. As a Kiwi from New Zealand, I take great interest in Shane's career and having him now in NASCAR, we need access to see this awesome race here. I love SUPERCARS, and now NASCAR, bring it on!❤👍

Great video guys. Having the international drivers in these races has generated so much interest in nascar overseas, which is good for the sport. The attitude of most of the nascar drivers to the international drivers has also been great for the sport too. They need to get SVG & Kostecki back again soon to see what they can do when things go right for them as they both battled issues on the day. Thanks for mentioning our guys. 😊

Thanks for you're positive comments, .....about coming 10th, He had a sticky thottle and 2 long stops, also Chris Bell was road blocking him for last 20+ laps, the next 3 cars further up were also in clear view, so if he wanted to bump Bell, maybe even with the issues, 6th would've been possible with a ok but not great car.
Also Brodie put down the 2nd fastest lap of the day and he had to start at the back of the grid got to about 16th? at on stage...., but I think Shane had trouble with the throttle from early on and another thing, a Nascar doesn't equal a Supercar, there's a 300 kg difference in weight to start, which changes a lot of your natural driving techniques, so without other issues I can only see him getting faster with more opportunities.
Love your guy Kyle Larsen as well, he's a great bloke, very accepting of Shane and all Internationals....You guys are right on for Nascar's future success, up till now I would've thought it no more than an American thing, but this new gen car has made this brand of racing open up to the world, it's great to see this with Supercar/Nascar type cars which people love to see.

Thanks for the kind words! We were definitely keeping a close eye on Brodie. If not for that mishap in qualifying, he might've stolen the show!

I agree 100% mate. I know that nascar has generated so much overseas interest through having these drivers come in and race and I think that’s good for the sport.
As far as SVG and Brodie go, they both had issues that hampered their race. I am very confident that if Kostecki started from 11th and SVG wasn’t hampered by engine issues and bad stops they’d both have finished top 5.

I'm an Aussie and a huge motorsport fan.
I had largely lost interest in Nascar years ago, but now have a huge thirst for it again after SVG, Kosteski are in it. I'm also a huge Kyle Larson fan.
I have now gone back and watched every race from this season and watched so many TH-cam Nascar channels and whatever content i can find online.
Im not the only one who is super excited about Nascar again.

If NASCAR wants to make a hit on TV viewers down under they really need to get rid of all the bloody adverts during the race...every 5-6 laps, 10 adverts. The 6 hour Bathurst 1000 has no advert interruptions...nor do any of the Supercar races

@@billy4eyes512 It extends from the NASCAR broadcast and coverage. I watched a live stream on an International setting, the adds were removed but there was no commentary so the like of Fox or KAYO have to run (local) adds that fit in when the US broadcast run their adds

Shane is a real racer and as an Australian who has watched V8 supercars for years I can't believe how much it's changed. It's very generic and more a simulation racing event now days compared to the racing in Nascar . I watched the Infinity race at Watkin Glen today and am so excited about seeing Shane out there ripping up the track and enjoying his racing again after being restricted to race over here . Not surprised he is looking for the exit door over here and there are other great talents here who would jump at the opportunity to get out of supercars and match it with your great drivers

All said n done 2nd time in the car for SVG and a car he really doesn't know yet very well and a new type of tyre to contend with he certainly showed he's more than capable of being able to compete on a very high level ... Ovals will be a very new prospect to over come but if anyone can he's that Guy that will adapt very quickly ... Such a multi talented driver on 4 or 2 wheels ... Single seater prix cars ... WRC rally cars ... Sprint cars ... Migets ... 4 Wheel quad bikes ... Moto cross bikes ... Drift cars ... The list is long ... and he has Won in every one of those categories ... Elite driver of the highest order ... All on TH-cam for everyone to see ... 🇳🇿

In 2019 Alexander Rossi, Indy 500 winner and James Hinchcliffe shared a Holden Commodore at Mount Panorama. They finished 19th after starting on the last row of the 26-car grid.
