  • Shane van Gisbergen, or SVG for short, got his start racing quarter midgets on dirt but made his way to the Supercar series in 2007.
Throughout that time, he has participated in many different racing disciplines and used some of those interchangeable motorsports skills to make the most of his debut in NASCAR. One of those techniques is Heel-Toe Shifting, which he explains in this video

Shane didn't mention that in New Zealand when you start school, at 5 years old, to get out of some lessons some teachers would allow those boys that were a bit disruptive to go and do other stuff like mowing the lawns with the tractor, or go down to buy the teacher there cigarettes, often with the kid sneaking out in the teachers car. In order not to get in troubleshooting, the kid needed to be good behind the wheel. The heel toe thing is taught in Junior school here. The Fins holds the honour of having the most F1 champions. The whole country enjoys rally type dirt track racing, and to keep it available to all, they mandate that the winner of any race must put up the winning car for sale to any other driver at a set, very modest price. This keeps wealthy drivers, who can afford the best and most expensive mods, more aligned to the pack. Fantastic idea.
This should be instituted in every country because it not only produces more elite drivers, it also improves all participating drivers.

*In regards to Chicago, taking nothing away from his masterful corner setups and overtakes of other cars, SVG Won the race on fast corner entries ON THE DOWNSHIFT, managing NOT to lockup the rear (ala Bubba Wallace) with his Clutch usage and not simply slamming the shifter forward 4 times as fast as it could go, while standing on the brakes. Prove me wrong.*

I know Marcos had trouble with braking the Supercars after coming back from NASCAR. Some of the skill and finesse he had from his first Supercars career just wasn't there anymore. So, you might be right there. Then SVG comes to NASCAR, brakes right at the limit of the car's capabilities, uses the rear axle to help the turn in, feels the grip under the car and carries a mile or two extra through the corners, leaving series regulars struggling to keep up! Shane has phenomenal car control, he's got a sixth sense for feeling exactly what grip is available from whatever car he's driving, and figuring out how to make use of that. You could copy his technique, but without that feel for the car you won't get the same performance.
