This eighth generation Volkswagen Golf might just be all the car you'll ever need. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
    Ten Second Review
Volkswagen has reimagined what its Golf family hatchback should be, this eighth generation model packaged very differently from its predecessor. Under the skin, hybrid engineering is prevalent further up the range but for potential buyers, what will probably matter most is the distinctive new nose and the classy minimalist cabin. Loyal Golf owners will find lots to like here.
    Background
As one former Volkswagen Group Chairman once pointed out, 'the biggest mistake any Volkswagen Golf can make is to stop being a Golf'. Which is why the seven previous generation versions of this model have been marked by such gradual evolution. Visually though, this MK8 model certainly looks a little more distinct. Too much of a change? Only you can decide.
In some ways, this eighth generation version isn't actually quite as much of a step forward as its predecessor. Most of the stuff you can't see is the same as before - the MQB platform and most of the engines for example. And the ground-breaking full-electric e-Golf is no more; Volkswagen wants to reserve full-battery-tech for its new ID family of models. Still, mild hybrid-tech features strongly and there are big steps forward in cabin design and quality. Sounds promising.
    Driving Experience
Most of the engineware in this Golf is carried over from before and as usual, gearboxes include the normal 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG auto transmission options. The line-up starts with a 110PS 1.0-litre TSI petrol unit which is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The volume part of the petrol range is built around Volkswagen's familiar 1.5-litre TSI EVO powerplant, developing either 130 or 150PS. The faster 150PS version of this unit makes 62mph from rest in 8.5s en route to a maximum of 139mph and if you order it with the optional 7-speed DSG auto transmission, you'll get Volkswagen's latest 'eTSI' mild hybrid tech included. There's also a Golf GTE plug-in hybrid which mates a 1.4-litre TSI 150PS petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor, creating a total system output of 245PS, yet offering an all-electric WLTP-rated driving range of 36 miles. You'll search in vain for a full-electric version to replace the outgoing e-Golf: Volkswagen's ID.3 model will cover off that niche. The MK8 Golf GTI hot hatch also offers 245PS from an uprated 'EA888 evo4' version of the usual 2.0 TSI turbo petrol powerplant.
If you want a diesel, you'll find that Volkswagen has improved its 2.0-litre TDI 150PS offering, plus, as before, there's a 115PS version of this same TDI powerplant for entry-level customers. At the top of the range, the same engine develops 200PS in the top Golf GTD.
From an engineering perspective, this MK8 Golf, like its predecessor, uses the same front-wheel drive MQB platform, here updated so as to offer greater structural rigidity. As usual, there's the option of Volkswagen's 'DCC' 'Dynamic Chassis Control' adaptive damping system which works with a 'Driver Profile' driving modes system offering 'Eco', 'Comfort', 'Sport' and 'Individual' settings. And of course there's extra camera-driven tech, including an optional 'Travel Assist' system which combines Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane assist to allow 'hands-free' driving at speeds of 130mph. Which sounds vaguely alarming but which Volkswagen assures us is a significant safety aid.
    Design and Build
From the front, you might think that this MK8 model line doesn't look especially 'Golf-like' with its lower nose and slimmer grille flanked by beady full-LED headlights. Different front bumper styling varies with different trim levels and the rear features a set of angular LED tail lamps. The rear hatch features the brand's latest logo above 'Golf' lettering and the arrow-shaped C-pillar design (a Golf signature feature since the fourth generation model) is carried forward onto this one. Dimensionally, this model is virtually the same size as its predecessor and as before, there's a choice of either five-door hatch or estate body styles.

Your detailed reviews really are second to none. I’m always a bit confused by the cuts of walking to your mark to start speaking. It’s fine so please don’t take this as overly negative. But you could comfortably talk while walking or pointing out aspects of the car. Also it seems odd that pointing out power ports as USBC like its an oddity when it’s been the primary standard for phones for at least the last four years is strange. It makes total sense to move to USBC on a generation change at this point.

I owned a Mk7 Golf for just over three years. Logically, it was the best all round car in its class and perfect for my needs - It was close to perfect, but I found it soulless and when I had to choose between selling it or my Dacia Dustbin (sorry, Duster) I kept the Duster. The Golf was Mr Goody Two Shoes and boring - the Dustbin is not quite all there, but much more likeable...... Not driven a Mk8, but hear lots of complaints that the cost cutting has had an effect on perceived quality.

I have a 1.5 TSI 150 DSG and it’s a truly remarkable car. So far no lag on take up, it’s extremely quiet, very comfortable, does close to 50mpg, and with its mild hybrid technology is quite quick. I can’t believe how bad it makes my old car feel. Build quality is excellent and my local dealer very helpful. Your review is excellent and anyone considering buying a Mk 8 Golf should read it.

Thanks for such an in-depth review. I will come in handy.
Since 2007, I have had 4 Golfs, a 1.6FSI Mk5, a 1.4TSI 122ps Mk6, a 1.4TSI 122ps Mk 7 and a 1.5 TSI EVO 150PS Mk7.5, the last 3 all with DSG. I have to admit, I didn't notice the difference with the lack of a Multi-Link suspension in the MK7, but found the Mk7.5 handling so much better than the Mk5 & Mk6. It just shows how cars evolve with newer generations. I am undecided on changing over to the Mk8 as I have even been told by a mate who works for a VW dealership not to buy it straight away but wait around 6-12 months for VW to iron out any issues. I am using the various reviews to assess whether to buy one as my finance finishes next year or maybe get a T-Roc instead.

@@ameerhamza4046 I am still driving my 7.5 Golf. My brother has got the Mk.8 Golf GTI and has experienced a few issues with it. As more of the VW cars get the same updates as the Golf, I think I will hold onto my car for a bit longer. I have got quite a low mileage anyway thanks to lockdown and working locally so I got a VW extended warranty on it back in March this year. When I looked at all the other warranty companies out there, it was better value buying directly from VW.

Volkswagen's are the most over rated cars on the market. Customers worldwide are still not being properly compensated for the VW diesel scam. Volkswagen's perceived quality is overshadowed by the poor reliability ratings they receive and poor to average customer service. Here in the UK people tend to ignore the points made previously and blindly buy these cars. If you look at reviews of them in Australia for example customers tend to be a bit more savvy and choose more reliable brands. There are much better alternatives on the market. My money would go on the Korean or Japanese brands. Thanks for a great TH-cam channel. Your reviews are very detailed and informative.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply The squished headlights with an over-bearing hood(bonnet). The sloping roofline to the rear hatch is to extreme for the classic lines of the golf IMO. The loss of knob and button controls that are integrated into touch screens . The interior cabin with the excessive LCD displays, which at night when lit reminds me of an 80's video arcade and not what a refined Golf cabin should look like.
The MK5/6 generation is the highpoint of the Golf line and my hope is VW will pull back on so much of the electronic tech for the MK9 which isn't keeping with the raw spirit of the Golf/GTI. Basically keep the traditional lines and keep it simple as possible.

Its another VW Golf. Does exactly the same as the previous model. The whole industry is designed to make money from customers who are directly responsible for the depletion of the earths resources for all the materials to build more and more cars. Its sad that the world revolves around money in this way. Create something that nobody really needs to keep people in jobs. Its the same as the council worker employed to clean the streets (no disrespect, Ive been on the bins a few years ago), yet if nobody dropped litter he would be out of a job. Its all wrong, all of it. No logic or sense whatsoever yet its how our population survives. Make something, customer works to pay for it, keeps the manufacturer in a job, customer works to buy something else to keep someone else in a job. Crazy.

Hi Shane, what don't you like about the VW Golf MK8?

Hi, I like the interior dashboard ect, the exterior is very bland looking, I feel they could have done a better effort, it’s not the type of car you look back at after you’ve parked, the best looking golfs in my opinion were the mark 2 gti big bumper model and the 7.5 clubsport.

@@Shane-zx4ps Golf 3 is the best looking imo, or if one likes more "boxed" form the 2 of course (I drove those quite a lot - sadly now my 3 has rusted)

@@phil8437 I don't agree. I just trade in my 2019 mazda 3 into a golf 8. Never had a bad car like that mazda 3 BP. Quality of the golf 8 is superior to the mazda 3. Everything feels better, works better and still is better.
