Best car review on TH-cam - no personal BS. Integrity with facts and honesty. I don't know Jonathon Crouch, (I hope I have the right name), but he comes across in this BMW 1 series review as authentic and credible. And in the 21st Century that's a rare thing for something so basic and important in communication skills. Well done.
My wife has recently taken delivery of a 118i M Sport, and I can confirm it's a fantastic little car. Drives very nicely, has a decent amount of power for town and city driving and has a very smart and high quality interior with excellent tech. Coming from a 2017 4 series it's obviously not as powerful and nice to look at but ticks plenty of boxes. Great review and thanks.
Amazing review, I sat through the 1 hour session twice. Informative and an immense attention to details on the various options available. Would be great if you could also show the use of child seats to give the viewer (and target audience of vehicles like these - young families) more information on the effective practical space at the back. Enjoyed this review and subbed!
My wife went for the 118i M Sport. I was so surprised with just how good the 1.5 3cyl engine is. Really impressive and more that enough for most people.
Was it leased or paid cash ? Leasing is okay but you lose hand over fist trading it in what is effectively a rented car. Hope you keep the car long term or its a waste of money.
Great review with a lot of comprehensive info on peripheral information which provides great context. Not just information on the car. It lends a very broad perspective to the review. Excellent job and keep this up.
Very comprehensive review to say the least! I can't believe I watched the whole hour, albeit in three stints. Looking at the UK configurator now (late Nov 2020) the comments about the lack of Android Auto (AA) support are out of date. I specced up a 118i M Sport and the Connected Package Professional (included as standard) not only includes AA mirroring (as well as Apple carplay), but it's also wireless. I had trouble finding any info on the configurator about adaptive dampers, but it sounds like you probably don't need them. The exciting new 128ti has been launched since this video was made, which obviously plugs the huge power gap between the 118i petrol and the M135i.
It's just old school journalism. Prepared and very well articulate. Plus maybe there's que cards with talking points so he doesn't fumble with what to say next.. But again. Boils down to how articulate and coherent he is.
Way too much gap between the 118i 140 hp and M135i 306hp. It's more than double, a mid range 120i would have had his customers, including myself. The packages are badly done and the options almost don't exist to choose outside of packages.. To meet my desired minimum list of options needed to tick comfort pack plus both technology packs. Plus panoramic roof colour and better wheels the 118i M sport went up to 36k! Way too much, really liked the car but as said because desirable options are only part of packages takes the price of the car to the next level
@@decarp3nt3r yes , it is...now. Unfortunately too late , I already had my car..frustrating as the power output was exactly what I was looking for .The only downside is the price, starts at 34k , I've configured with my minimum of options and it went up to nearly 40k! But again considering the power and fun I think I would have payed the price. Oh well, maybe in three years time when I will order a new car there will still be more than the soulless electric vehicle.
It would be nice if the M sport had around 200 bhp in the sport mode as it is basically 3/4 of the 2litre engine. We have the 1.5 litre M sport and if the power could be increased at the touch of a button and keep the economy in comfort mode then this would be a perfect car for me.
I honestly thought they should have brought out a phev model also. The ev only range really makes the cost of ownership low and the overall convenience of not having to fill up during covid cannot be overlooked Nonetheless amazing review and great car!

The M Sport models aren't more powerful. M Sport is a lesser version of the actual M version. No difference between the engine in a 116d se and a 116d M Sport.
I honestly miss the 3 door since it creates a more personal luxury experience. BMW really needs to offer the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond in the 1-Series also. There are some young people who have a mature enough ear to appreciate the higher quality.

Great video, love the new f40 1 series. Quick check on facts was that you could have adaptive dampers on the old f20/21 model and also the automatic versions (like standard m135i) do not have zf boxes anymore, but do have an Aisin 8 speed ones which are great too 👍
@RichJW having had zf boxes in all my past cars I disagree in part. The zf might be a better gearbox (build or setup) but the Aisin box is way way better for manual upshifts, savage actually at 5.5k revs which I enjoy. In auto it is just as smooth but does not kick down as quickly as the zf for sure 👍

I had a 118d for a week. My 320d had some gremlins dealt with under warranty. The Aisin gearbox in the 118d is impressive compared to ZF. It feels strange being pulled along rather than pushed along because it is front wheel drive. So does not drive like a BMW per se. What made me laugh was when I went to activate the adaptive high beam. A message popped up on the iDrive stating it was a subscription only feature. I can see the appeal though. I net 55 mpg on a drive through the countryside. It handles well. Reverse camera was okay but a little out of alignment. Despite lining up several times to back into a bay it was not perfect. It’s likely more as an extra set of eyes to manoeuvre safely. The car is grown up in size. Not as nimble as previous generations. Front seats felt a little cramped for myself as 6ft and they would probably feel uncomfortable on a long journey. So definitely not a cruiser. It’s not bad as an entry point into BMW but the G20 just rides better and is near perfect. If you must though then the 120d engine would be the pick, diesel wise. The 118d is nippy up to 30mph a dead spot and, then a lump of torque 45-52mph, followed by a bit more of a struggle. The 120d feels far more linear and the torque seems better controlled. Although torque steer is entirely possible if not driving to conditions.
I'm suitably impressed by the non-stop uninterrupted commentary from this guy but how many people would actually view this very long video to the end? It must have taken a fair while to string all this detail together. Good to see that BMW cover the interior pillars with trim rather than the exposed paintwork on Mercedes and Audi.
