Great video! The geologist in me is curious to know what kind of ore you're using. Looks like hematite? Not sure what the red stuff is, possibly dried iron bacteria. Just guesses though. A taller, narrower furnace should help the fire get hotter. Might be worth a try. So much work for so little iron. I wonder what you plan to make.

Grind the fired rocks into powder. The metal will not become powder. Then you can use the powder again in the clay ball mix and get more metal. Just an idea. I wouldn't waste it just sweeping it away. It is survival right?

When you burn charcoal it creates carbon monoxide, so it drips the oxygen from the iron and creates carbon dioxide. Basically it takes away the oxygen in the iron to make it more pure
I actually prefer it without subtitles. In a lot of his videos it's not clear initially what he's doing or why, but as the video progresses his goal becomes apparent. I think it's enjoyable to try and guess what he's doing. Additionally I just like the existing aesthetic of his videos; not having links, adds, or text in the video is kind of refreshing. That's just my opinion, subtitles could be okay however.

Your furnace is way too cold, is barely enough to melt copper or bronze. Part of it is due to air delivery system which is inadequate, part due to poor coke, you need some good coal or charcoal to get temperatures high enough.

Для справки, для получения таким способом 600 граммов металла надо порядка десяти килограмм руды. Причем обогащённой. У примитива таких объемов не было. А так всё правильно.

This will take some time - but you will get enough ore eventually. EVERYTHING is ALWAYS sooo much work with you "primitive" guys... Just keep on rocking!
Would the iron be heavier than the other dross around it when you smash it up? If so, could you use some sort of "panning" process with a wide clay dish and running water to float away to separate the light stuff from the heavy ore?

Yea if you were thinking in modern terms possible but then you have to wonder why hasn't it been part of the history text.. iron wasn't even discovered yet that's why the show is primitive not simi civilization or modern...show me in history where clay plates were used for any kind of panning..even up to now...must be a reason for that...probably because clay makes a bad medium to the panning process..Copper would be a better medium, but then that wasn't discovered either there just showing what you can do in a primitive setting with materials in your area....
If you produce molten metal (really, really hard because you probably won't get it hot enough anyway) in that kind of direct reduction furnace it'll absorb carbon from the burning coal/charcoal and become pig iron... which is great for modern iron production but really bad for primitive workers. Pig iron needs to be refined again then worked in more difficult ways, to remove all the extra carbon or it'll be too brittle to be used for anything. What he wants is an iron bloom, a chunk of semi molten iron and slag mixed together which can then be forged to remove the slag and produce wrought iron or steel.
@@danieltoledo9295 As far as I'm aware it's the same as any other iron bloom, the only difference is the source of ore being used, in that case iron sand rather than crushed rock. It's still a bloomery furnace that produces an iron bloom.

It would probably take you less time to find magnetite (black sand) in the river in much greater quantities, than it took you to find all of that fantastic coal coke. You might even find gold by accident lol.
You should look up gold panning. Iron is heavier then the ash and stone, it will be easier to seperate the fragments after youve crushed them all. You will get more pure iron. Its also easier to melt in smaller pieces because they have a different melting point. Just a tip.
I think if you make the clayballs again you need to fire them VERY VERY HOT. Until the metal melts and the clay mix is burned away. Stoke the fire constantly and stoke it well. Leave nothing but white ashes in the entire pit. Have a thick heavy-duty clay pan underneath the fire to catch the metal as it drips down. (Where the embers were falling in the video) . you have some good iton and can make enough of that stage 1 (little beads you got from it) and move to stage 2 (refining it/ slagging it and then pouring into an ingot) for a later stage 3 (make something you really need like axe or knife). I have enjoyed watching your progress and look forward to more.
metals from dirt are usually lighter metals. what u got there is a mixture of metals. u gotta use a natural magnet usally found where lighning strikes iron and use that to gather black sand from river bead

Of course, we all know he's not really living primitively, as evidenced by the camera he's using so we can watch his exploits. Just curious, is it possible to use ceramic crucible to melt iron? I mean, if it's possible, you can potentially get more clean iron to work with. As I see, for now you get a lot of impurities, and basically very small amount of raw iron. I'm not sure is it possible to actually melt iron to liquid form in that kind of kiln.
Le soucis c'est que le minerais n'est pas assez riche, tu devrais bruler tes pierres à minerai ou ta poudre avant afin d'éliminer les plus légères impuretés. Ensuite utiliser du charbon n'est pas une bonne idée. Trop d'impuretés dedans même si le charbon est plus riche en carbone et donc chauffe plus que le charbon de bois. Et encore, ton bas fourneau est trop large et pas assez haut. Faut que tu puisse y mettre plus de minerai et surtout sur une plus petite surface.
Eh, even fishing hooks or sewing needles are an improvement over not having them... an awl maybe. Even small amount of metal is a handy thing to someone who only has stone tools.

It's great and all and you should be proud of what you got. But it was boring as hell watching you pick out bits smaller than pebbles. It made the 11+ minutes feel like an hour. Sometimes it's ok to jump the process if it's Exactly the same thing over and over and over. But it was still very impressive.
2 sticks..still practiced today in survival training and other parts of the world..easier with sticks then carrying 2 lumps of iron ore in your pocket if you had any at the time..
I make fire with sticks nearly everyday. I do it with a all natural materials. I also use rock and steel to spark fire. I use iron pyrite nodules too which are easier than rock and steel and certainly easier than handrill or bow drill and much quicker. You have no idea. Anywhere there is no pyrite they use sticks. Places with lots of pyrite they use sticks secondary but still use them yes. Pyrite the size of a chicken egg is very light and when halved and used with flint lasts quite a long time. Pyrite on pyrite lasts much less time.
Lighters are man made and have a short life span. Gas runs out, working parts break or rust. Pyrite can be found naturally around the world as can sticks. Once you learn to use them you have fire at will. Same principle as giving a man a fish. You feed him for a day or two. Teach a man to fish and he feeds himself and family for the present and future. Lighters, sticks and pyrite same principle. You should learn to do it. You will enjoy it.

It's direct reduction, a bloomery furnace. You don't actually need to reach the melting temp of iron (and don't want to fully melt it anyway or it'll turn into pig iron which is almost useless to a primitive worker) You're kind of... almost melting it... and burning away a lot of the crap around it. The semi molten bits will tend to stick together and form a lump of mixed iron/slag called an iron bloom. You then forge the bloom, which forces out the slag and produces wrought iron or steel for tools.

More wood for carbon, and more airflow for higher heat .... need to sinter out that iron, then melt into raw metal ....

Just curious, is it possible to use ceramic crucible to melt iron? I mean, if it's possible, you can potentially get more clean iron to work with. As I see, for now you get a lot of impurities, and basically very small amount of raw iron. I'm not sure is it possible to actually melt iron to liquid form in that kind of kiln.
It enough for a badass arrow head.

Dunno if it would work but I would have tried making a simple manual centrifuge to separate them after crushing them
Le soucis c'est que le minerais n'est pas assez riche, tu devrais bruler tes pierres à minerai ou ta poudre avant afin d'éliminer les plus légères impuretés.
Ensuite utiliser du charbon n'est pas une bonne idée. Trop d'impuretés dedans même si le charbon est plus riche en carbone et donc chauffe plus que le charbon de bois.
Et encore, ton bas fourneau est trop large et pas assez haut.
Faut que tu puisse y mettre plus de minerai et surtout sur une plus petite surface.

Eh, even fishing hooks or sewing needles are an improvement over not having them... an awl maybe. Even small amount of metal is a handy thing to someone who only has stone tools.
@@lucasriley874 True. He can also make blade tips/edges out of metal, only on top of the wood, to save material while still having the sharp metal blade. (it's hard to explain in words what I'm thinking of.)

It's great and all and you should be proud of what you got. But it was boring as hell watching you pick out bits smaller than pebbles. It made the 11+ minutes feel like an hour. Sometimes it's ok to jump the process if it's Exactly the same thing over and over and over. But it was still very impressive.

Some of those nodules look like iron pyrites. Knock the large nodules together and they throw sparks. Primitive fire lighting.
2 sticks..still practiced today in survival training and other parts of the world..easier with sticks then carrying 2 lumps of iron ore in your pocket if you had any at the time..
I make fire with sticks nearly everyday. I do it with a all natural materials. I also use rock and steel to spark fire. I use iron pyrite nodules too which are easier than rock and steel and certainly easier than handrill or bow drill and much quicker. You have no idea. Anywhere there is no pyrite they use sticks. Places with lots of pyrite they use sticks secondary but still use them yes. Pyrite the size of a chicken egg is very light and when halved and used with flint lasts quite a long time. Pyrite on pyrite lasts much less time.
why go thru all that trouble use a lighter easy to carry not bulky yea why not since your off the wall on this actually use manganese works better..
Lighters are man made and have a short life span. Gas runs out, working parts break or rust. Pyrite can be found naturally around the world as can sticks. Once you learn to use them you have fire at will. Same principle as giving a man a fish. You feed him for a day or two. Teach a man to fish and he feeds himself and family for the present and future. Lighters, sticks and pyrite same principle. You should learn to do it. You will enjoy it.

huh, i didn't think that charcoal could get hot enough to melt iron. I though you needed something that can get as hot as coal coke.
oh wait they're just beads. I thought this was going to destroy all of my research on ways to make iron with out help from modern civilization.
It's direct reduction, a bloomery furnace. You don't actually need to reach the melting temp of iron (and don't want to fully melt it anyway or it'll turn into pig iron which is almost useless to a primitive worker) You're kind of... almost melting it... and burning away a lot of the crap around it. The semi molten bits will tend to stick together and form a lump of mixed iron/slag called an iron bloom. You then forge the bloom, which forces out the slag and produces wrought iron or steel for tools.
All this iron and all this iron and not a knife to be made. Keep up the heat work!
