I read about your grandfather in the book titled, "SOG - The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam" authored by John L. Plaster. He was a mighty man!
Col. Howard was the man who other Medal of Honor recipients would speak of as a the most heroic man they knew. Through his example we can see how some of these men are wired, very differently from the rest of us. When they were in the most intense combat they remain cool headed and they were brave, not just once but consistently, time after time. He loved the military, his men and probably would never have retired had he not been injured in a parachute jump after more than thirty years of jumping out of airplanes. When he took people on tours at the MOH Museum he always spoke about other heroes. His decorations were not mentioned in the introduction to his speech. I suspect this was not because the host was unaware of his accomplishments, but because of Col. Howard's modesty, he probably did not want a long recitation of his accomplishments, preferring to have his words and actions speak for themselves. God Speed Col. Howard.

Col Howard (then LTC) was my Battalion Commander at Kelley Barracks (Special Troops Battalion, VII Corps) in Stuttgart Germany back in the 1980's. He was a soldier's soldier and asked nothing of his troops that he would not ask of himself. He led by example, but kicked ass when necessary.

I was in class 9-81 SFQC. Col Nick Rowe was the CO. XO was Maj Howard. I can talk forever about their interaction and tutelage by both. We knew of the legends before us. Scared us. Maj Howard taught a couple of classes. Col Rowe reviewed and critiqued patrol orders. Damn I am proud to say that these legendary men have highly influenced my life.

Masterson Bat There are actually some actors who were good soldiers. Audie Murphy comes to mind. I have the deepest respect for these old soldiers. My dad was career Navy lost part of his leg in Korea and stayed in 20, then civil service on ships 15 more. He was on the Collet a shell came in killed everyone in fire control except him, he still has the shell that hit the ship. He's 91 tough as hell. Growing up on bases I've known many marines and some army. It wasn't for me but I respect all of them.
Okay, for the uneducated here Mr. Coleman Sylvester Stalon was a draft dodger who went to Switzerland and was a woman's volleyball coach. Eastwood was a Lifeguard during the Korean conflict and was stationed in California never seeing combat. Also Audi Murphy became an actor after his selfless survice. Regardless of your rank,if he knew you and thought you did your duty,you could call him Bob. If he thought you COULDN'T be counted on to do your duty,the smart thing to do was to try to avoid him until you could transfer out to another unit because you wouldn't be there long.
Yes,and he was a E-6 staff sgt working in supply when he was nominated the first time. By time I met him,he was a SFC E-7,and acting as the Recon Company 1st Sgt and forbidden to go on any more missions. One of the most genuine nice guys you could ever hope to meet as long as you did your duty. If you were a shirker,Bob would make sure you didn't stick around long. Pretty much everybody just called him Bob. Those who didn't either hadn't been at Kontum very long,or were not going to be there much longer.

My friend was one of the last one's off the roof in Saigon, 1975. We served together in Hawaii, Viet Nam, Ft Campbell. He lost his wife and son during the evacuation at Tan Son Knut evacuating orphans. He is my age but now suffers from dementia. We stayed in contact for over 53 years.
I serve 13 years in the active Army and I couldn't believe I've never heard of this man. I could see and hear the passion in what he felt and it brought tears to my eyes thinking those who don't understand can care a less. Being proud what I did this is what solidifies why I shouldn't care what others do not care about because this is way more important fan those who only care about their opinion.....
I was an E-2 in Hawaii. I was a former E-5 with an EIB. I trained a man that became my friend. SFC Maximo Yabes in FO procedures. Later on in Viet Nam I became and E-6. I was wounded later and then I learned that he had received the MOH. He had a great sense of humor and was a soldier's SGT. He lost his life taking care of his truth as a 1SG. Another of my classmates from High School was also a MOH recipient. I think of them every days. I am 82 now and the memories are vivid.
In 1984 he was the camp Mcall CDR. He road marched into the compound every day. He was a figure head along with James (Nick) Rowe who issued me my Green beret in 1986. True legends of the Green Berets.
Cpt Robert L. Howard was my company commander in 1975-76, at Ft. Lewis, WA. I was the Anti-Tank Section Leader, "A" Company, 2nd Bn, 75th Infantry, (RANGER). This man was more than just a soldier. He was a matchless leader who motivated every soldier in our battalion. Just by talking to him, he made you determined to be the very best you could be. He lead by example. His words were prophetic. How that fool imagined he was going to get away with that is a mystery to me,but Bob just told him to go back and fill it like it should have been filled and "then report back to me. You and I are going on a little run. If you keep up,you won't be out of the course today." Bob LOVED rucksack runs,and was not known to suffer fools gladly,and I would be shocked if the student didn't drop out. Bob even used to go on rucksack runs in VN,all suited up with his ruck and his basic load of ammo,he would hit the road from Kontum to Pleiku,run until he was tired,and then run back,

That's the most honorable man I have ever heard of, our country owes him, and all veterans so much. My father served as a Marine in Korea in 1950, and passed away at age 83 ,2 years ago. I wished I could have been a Marine, or soldier, I only served 23 years in Laredo US Border Patrol, I was shot once in 1993, and 7 times in 2003. But I wished I could have been a veteran of Department of Defense, instead of Department of Homeland Security, but I had a good ride, and am now serving for Texas state police, 33 years as a peace officer.
I tried to enlist in the Corps as well. Due to paperwork I could not but was drafted in March 1968. I always go out of my way to express my gratitude to any Marine I see. I will attend a Marine's funeral and render respects as taps is played. At work my best friends were Marines. I worked in aviation overhaul and the Marines were represented by a commissioned officer and a Chief Gunnery Sergeant. I loved going to the production meetings and listening to the Marine representative cut through all the B.S. wanting to know why the production schedule for their aircraft slipped. There was never a good answer back to the Marine rep. To the Marine it was black or white, you either completed the mission or you did not. The color gray does not exist in a Marine's color palette. Outside of the production meetings I would go out of my way to help the Marines. My efforts were small but heartfelt. To all you Marines, Semper Fi!
AND......,ALL 3 nominations happened in a one year period. The CO had to make him the Recon Company 1st Sgt to keep him from running more missions after being nominated for the MoH the third time.

Those that were pro-democracy decided that communism couldn't be worse than the atrocities being heaped upon them by war, from both their 'defenders' and the North Vietnamese.
Audie Murphy. Remember though, Audie Murphy only served a relatively short time, from North Africa, to France and into Germany. The impressive thing about him was how heroic he was consistently through his short career. Murphy was a smaller man, rejected because of his stature by the Marines. Heroism comes in all shapes and sizes. Both great military heroes and great Americans. No need to compare or contrast them really.
I am a 100% service connected disabled veteran. I was drafted in 1968 seven months after getting married and got on a plane for Vietnam when my first born son was 20 days old. I have or had two combat MOS's 11B & 13B. I made 4 grades while in Vietnam but the biggest contribution I made was to make rich men much richer and those same men or their offspring are now sending your children to die for their opium cartel profits.

One of the most genuine nice guys you could ever hope to meet as long as you did your duty. If you were a shirker,Bob would make sure you didn't stick around long. Pretty much everybody just called him Bob. Those who didn't either hadn't been at Kontum very long,or were not going to be there much longer.

My friend was one of the last one's off the roof in Saigon, 1975. We served together in Hawaii, Viet Nam, Ft Campbell. He lost his wife and son during the evacuation at Tan Son Knut evacuating orphans. He is my age but now suffers from dementia. We stayed in contact for over 53 years.
Although I am an Air Force veteran I would have been proud to have served in this man's command!

I serve 13 years in the active Army and I couldn't believe I've never heard of this man. I could see and hear the passion in what he felt and it brought tears to my eyes thinking those who don't understand can care a less. Being proud what I did this is what solidifies why I shouldn't care what others do not care about because this is way more important fan those who only care about their opinion.....
I was an E-2 in Hawaii. I was a former E-5 with an EIB. I trained a man that became my friend. SFC Maximo Yabes in FO procedures. Later on in Viet Nam I became and E-6. I was wounded later and then I learned that he had received the MOH. He had a great sense of humor and was a soldier's SGT. He lost his life taking care of his truth as a 1SG. Another of my classmates from High School was also a MOH recipient. I think of them every days. I am 82 now and the memories are vivid.

Cpt Robert L. Howard was my company commander in 1975-76, at Ft. Lewis, WA. I was the Anti-Tank Section Leader, "A" Company, 2nd Bn, 75th Infantry, (RANGER). This man was more than just a soldier. He was a matchless leader who motivated every soldier in our battalion. Just by talking to him, he made you determined to be the very best you could be. He lead by example. His words were prophetic. No other human being has EVER impacted my life like this heroic man. I consider it a great honor to have known him, and served under his guidance. Rest in peace sir. Your tour of duty is up. Standing at attention and saluting you sir. Rest in God's arms.

He would constantly make trips to SWTG and meet with us who were going through the Q-COURSE. This man was a men amongst men.
He was the CO there for a while, Back when I was working Robin Sage one of the SOG guys I knew from Kontum was the head medic there,and he told me a story about a student that showed up for one of Bobs morning rucksack runs with a partially inflated air mattress in his rucksack. How that fool imagined he was going to get away with that is a mystery to me,but Bob just told him to go back and fill it like it should have been filled and "then report back to me. You and I are going on a little run. If you keep up,you won't be out of the course today." Bob LOVED rucksack runs,and was not known to suffer fools gladly,and I would be shocked if the student didn't drop out. Bob even used to go on rucksack runs in VN,all suited up with his ruck and his basic load of ammo,he would hit the road from Kontum to Pleiku,run until he was tired,and then run back,

That's the most honorable man I have ever heard of, our country owes him, and all veterans so much. My father served as a Marine in Korea in 1950, and passed away at age 83 ,2 years ago. I wished I could have been a Marine, or soldier, I only served 23 years in Laredo US Border Patrol, I was shot once in 1993, and 7 times in 2003. But I wished I could have been a veteran of Department of Defense, instead of Department of Homeland Security, but I had a good ride, and am now serving for Texas state police, 33 years as a peace officer.

I tried to enlist in the Corps as well. Due to paperwork I could not but was drafted in March 1968.
I always go out of my way to express my gratitude to any Marine I see. I will attend a Marine's funeral and render respects as taps is played. At work my best friends were Marines. I worked in aviation overhaul and the Marines were represented by a commissioned officer and a Chief Gunnery Sergeant. I loved going to the production meetings and listening to the Marine representative cut through all the B.S. wanting to know why the production schedule for their aircraft slipped. There was never a good answer back to the Marine rep. To the Marine it was black or white, you either completed the mission or you did not. The color gray does not exist in a Marine's color palette. Outside of the production meetings I would go out of my way to help the Marines. My efforts were small but heartfelt.

Yes he was, they were reduced to silver star, one reason given was that the mission he was on was secret
AND......,ALL 3 nominations happened in a one year period. The CO had to make him the Recon Company 1st Sgt to keep him from running more missions after being nominated for the MoH the third time.
@@JohnAdams-xc5yk I have a book by John Plaster, who was in SOG. He says in his book that one of the MOH recommendations was downgraded because of politics and jealousy. He called Col. Howard as the bravest of the brave.

Audie Murphy. Remember though, Audie Murphy only served a relatively short time, from North Africa, to France and into Germany. The impressive thing about him was how heroic he was consistently through his short career. Murphy was a smaller man, rejected because of his stature by the Marines. Heroism comes in all shapes and sizes. Both great military heroes and great Americans. No need to compare or contrast them really.
I am a 100% service connected disabled veteran. I was drafted in 1968 seven months after getting married and got on a plane for Vietnam when my first born son was 20 days old. I have or had two combat MOS's 11B & 13B. I made 4 grades while in Vietnam but the biggest contribution I made was to make rich men much richer and those same men or their offspring are now sending your children to die for their opium cartel profits.
A wonderful man and he spoke from the heart without any script like useless politicians do. I salute this magnificent Hero. My late Dad was a Korean War Vet with the RAAF he would have loved to hear this' speech.
