My husband and I bonded over Fleet Foxes when we were first dating. Four years later, we played their music at our wedding and now our son has begun to sing the songs too. 💕
Hey, this will probably get buried in the comment section, but this means so much to me. i had a great friend, named declan, we knew eachother for many years, we spent our summers in mykonos drinking ales and talking about poetry. he died this year, and this was his favorite song. i miss you declan.
Since I first heard this band in 2008, their music has deeply moved me. The songs become associated with the times and places in which I hear them. Blue Ridge Mountains and Ragged Wood will forever represent my trip to Yellowstone with my father during a cold fall. The entirety of Helplessness Blues is a hot summer for me. I can't wait to discover what this new music will become.
That's so true, their music more than any other, are associated with specific times that being me back, which gives me mixed feelings tbh

I have the same feeling with them and I always tell that to people but no one ever understood it (as I expected :) ) Helplessness is as well a very hot spring working in Austria. Both albums are filled with memories :)
I grew up listening to Yes, Simon and Garfunkel, Mamas and the Papas, Peter, Paul and Mary on vinyl.... this takes me back to those days, and makes me think of my dad who introduced me to those bands. It's nostalgic and brand new all at the same time, and is ineffably magical!
True! I've listened to 1960s/70s Folk Rock, Neil Young, experimental stuff etc. & gotta admit as ever, that FF hit that special key of true warmth & "magic". It's music from a brillant, funny & humble man with much heart. FF's music is the result.
Bless them and their multi-sectioned songs. Bless Robin Pecknold and his smooth af voice. Every listen I give this song, I feel my appreciation for it jump tenfold. IT'S SO FUCKING GOOD.
The Third of May is a famous painting by Goya which depicts rebels who lost against the Spanish army being shot in a firing line. I thought the painting in connection to the song was very interesting
They were not shot by the Spanish army, but by the French who at that time were invading Spain. They were humble people who bravely faced an invading army with what they had at home.
Yes, Goya documented the horrors that he saw at the time… through his paintings he was in a way one of the first real time documentarists. I always think of this song when I see his art :’)
The video is beautiful, the music is beautiful, the lyrics are beautiful... FLEET FOXES ARE BEAUTIFUL and I'm so grateful they're finally back in a time where we need them most!!
Okay hold up. Are they becoming even better?! The lyricism has actually developed into something even MORE beautiful. I'm getting goosebumps just listening to how truly amazing this is. I'm beyond excited for the album. That is all.
Robin Pecknold: My friend and bandmate Skyler Skjelset’s birthday is May 3, and our album Helplessness Blues was released on May 3, 2011. The song “Third of May / Ōdaigahara” is about my relationship with Skye. It addresses our distance in the years after touring that album, the feeling of having an unresolved, unrequited relationship that is lingering psychologically. Even if some time apart was necessary and progressive for both of us as individuals, I missed our connection, especially the one we had when we were teenagers, and the lyrics for the song grew out of that feeling." "It felt like a funny coincidence to see a Goya painting called Third of May. The compounded coincidences, and how the whole experience of playing music with him itself felt like a series of lucky breaks and coincidences, left me feeling like it was a good phrase to use for the title of a song."
Dave Teves omg. dude same here! as I was listening to this song for the first time. for some reason it'd remind me of what me any my bf are going through right now being far away from each other
I dated a girl for 3 years. One of her favorite bands was Fleet Floxes. ...she left me a few months ago. I've been listening to them almost every day, and now it's bittersweet that as my love leaves me, Fleet Foxes release a new album. I can't wait to listen to it all.
@@G0rd0nHealth … Terrible advice right here. Alternatively, Ethnios, you should look back in the ways your life was enriched over those 3 years and grow from the good parts of them. (Fleet Foxes is one of those parts FYI.) Hope you haven't abandoned them in the last couple of years.
I can't stop listening to this. It's brilliant. It's like looking on the other side of the mirror and seeing things that you didn't even knew existed. I don't know, i can't explain it, but it feels like i'm diving in the many mysteries of the world and understanding the beauty of our whole existence. Man, that's crazy music.

I'm so excited for you and your journey into this band. It is wonderful. They've been so near and dear to my heart throughout the last decade. I cried when I got the privilege to see them live back in '18.
My girlfriend and 3 children have listened to FF almost every night while we cook dinner, I can't explain or thank enough these wonderful artists for creating such wonderful and unique music that continues to make our lives better. FF is a truly big part of my life and what a difference this makes for music in our 2017.
Fuck yeah, this is everything I wanted from the next FF release. More "The Shrine/An Argument"-esque songwriting with surprising turns and lots of contrast between dissonance and sheer beauty. My excitement for this album has increased tenfold. Incredible stuff.
JollyMoonMan AGREED. Robin said in his AMA that TS/AA was his best accomplishment in song writing, so I'm hoping that means he will favor that style. It's one of my very favorite Fleet Foxes songs, without question.
I love that this feels both familiar and brand new at the same time. I love how with each album, they develop and progress but never lose that special 'fleet foxes' sound that makes them so unique. They don't feel the need to abandon their style or distance themselves from what they've done in the past like some other bands do.
Halfway through the song and already falling in love with it. I will admit that leading up to the release of your new album, I was worried that your core style and the aspects of your band that make it so great would change. But as I'm writing this comment and the song is continuing to play, I'm feeling more and more relief. It has the wonderful, unique sound of the Fleet Foxes that I know, but with some amazing little changes that come with the natural evolution of artists and groups of artists. This is the first taste I've had of your new music, and so far I'm more than satisfied. Thank you for making such genuine artwork!!
Yes, I love that they improve with their signature indie folk/country sound. I've hated when some great indie folk band like Bon Iver went electronic and Mumford and Sons got rid of the banjos and sounded like every other rock band. This album is going to totally sound amazing!
Want a truly visceral experience? Put some good headphones on, lie down, close your eyes, and simply listen to the magic of fleet foxes. Your mind will start producing images of transcending beauty in correlation to the sound waves that become impossible to explain. I saw a leaf blowing out of a pile and swirling through the wind, landing in a lake creating ripples that pierced the stillness of the mirror like surface and crashed along the shoreline. Try it for yourself

Take your time and memorize the lyrics. Today, wikileaks revealed that the CIA is capable of remotely taking over cars, planes, and medical devices. This song is chill though and is great to listen to while you wonder how many assassinations the CIA has committed via plane. Oh ya, your tv is also spying on you and your computer is weaponized malware that the CIA can take over at any time.
absolutely beautiful. The perfect accompaniment to welcome spring after the darkness and cold of winter. The sound of the sun rising in the morning sky
this album has a clear dichotomy of melancholia and a reverie of aspiration. I am truly impressed by the textures and layers in each track, definitely worth the wait.
Connor Hall Connor, I smiled and cried when I found this in my recommended videos. It's hard to believe that after all this time, they've returned to our ears and hearts and souls with new material.
First heard this song live. Absolutely magnificent in both live and recorded forms. Fleet Foxes are, as far as I'm concerned, the greatest band of the last 20 years. (Thanks for visiting Sydney, guys. The concert was amazing.)
Josh Tillman (Father John Misty) toured and recorded with Fleet Foxes as a drummer and back-up singer from 2008 to 2012, when he quit the band to pursue his solo project, Father John Misty. Robin Pecknold is the main singer/lyricist for Fleet Foxes. He sings all the songs, including this one. Fleet Foxes has had multiple drummers fill in for Tillman since he left the band, but it's unclear whether or not they've found a permanent replacement drummer for him yet.
I cant believe how alive i feel listening to this.... Like nothings been real for a very long time and suddenly its all coming back to me. I havent had a piece of music touch me like this song in such a long time.... im in tears dammit i am alive!
+Jack Stuart I agree. Some fans almost act as though you have to know a secret handshake to be a true fan. People who use music as some sort of status symbol totally miss the point of the material they endorse...its a bit ironic.
We listen to fleet foxes daily in our home. My children just adore your music almost as much as I do. You have a very special place in my heart and your music gives life to my sometimes broken soul. God bless you and your future music.
5 year of silence and then ....... "LIGHT ENDED THE NIGHT BUT THE SONG REMAINED" What a way to bring it back. Nothing but CHILLS nostalgia and pure excitement. Fleet Foxes have returned.
3:46 It's like hearing the most desperate cry, buried deep within someone's soul for so long, finally being screamed for the world to hear. This song is just unbelievably sad to me.
I keep trying to think of words that can express how happy I am right now, but all I can say is thank you Fleet Foxes for making new music. I've loved your music it seems like forever and my husband started listening to your music after we got together. I hope we can see you guys in a live show sometime!
This album is so FUCKING GENIUS. And i love all of them. Truly i do. But there is something just so incredibly special about this album. It has has damn near 4 years to soak in already. Hard to believe that much time has passed so fast. So much in my life has happened in this time. Ill never forget getting to see them the 1 and only time ive gotten to . On this tour. In Pittsburgh. My home. And this was the best performance ive seen in the setting it was performed. By far. Just literally jaw dropping. And the entire crowd was just silent. Like totally mesmerized. It was absolute magic.
seems like there's a lot of old fans in the comments. I believe this is my first time hearing them and this is beautiful...I love folk. with all me heart.
This song always gets me. On my travels in mission work in Mexico, working in the high beautifully rolled hills where patches of sunlight would hit parts, and where the breeze would hit my face peacefully as I shoveled, i would always listen to this song on repeat, not knowing the emotional impact it would give me moreso here at home now. after my friend commited suicide, actually 2 days right after that trip to Mexico, this song is a very solemn serious and holy listen. I thank Fleet Foxes for giving me all the memories of Mexico and my friend in one song.
Welcome back Fleet Foxes! Your music has been an emotional pillar for me throughout my college years -- I can't properly express how happy I am to see you guys back at it. Thanks again for the great music, and good luck on your tour!
I say this with love, but it is remarkable to compare the recored version to a video on TH-cam of him playing it live earlier in 2016. While the bones ares there, the song clearly went through many changes. This arrangement is incredible. It went from an okay folk-rock song, to a near-perfect record that lasts 9 mins long. I can't think of any other record of late as well-crafted as this. Special shout-out to the drummer and Robin I believe who played bass on this track. There is a power in the rhythm section that really lifts the emotion of the song throughout.
I'm so happy?? This just took me back to the feeling of driving to the woods at sunset and Helplessness Blues playing and feeling like there is so much out there to experience and love and witness. I just feel very full?? And excited. What beautiful visuals for the lyric video too! I feel blessed!

First heard this song live. Absolutely magnificent in both live and recorded forms.
Fleet Foxes are, as far as I'm concerned, the greatest band of the last 20 years.
(Thanks for visiting Sydney, guys. The concert was amazing.)
Nine minutes of straight chills. It's been far too long.
I had chills too!
Liance IM confused wasnt father John misty part of this band?? So who's singing this??
subwaysurfer father John misty was one of their instrumentalists that did a side project after Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes lead singer) took a break
Sam Dembling whoa thanks Sam that was very thorough. For some reason I thought the band split when he left...
I cant believe how alive i feel listening to this.... Like nothings been real for a very long time and suddenly its all coming back to me. I havent had a piece of music touch me like this song in such a long time.... im in tears dammit i am alive!
This made me smile for the first time in a long time.
Waited a whole year for this one moment. 💗💗Thanks for all this years of great art.
This song is deep.
It feels like a song about returning to your old self/life, knowing that nobody understands you.
That's what I got out of it.
Maybe more of this: They don’t know you for who you’ve become and you don’t have the patience to show them
I had no idea so many other people were as excited about Fleet Foxes as I was.
John Arnold it's because we are deep thinkers who don't talk much
Jesus Christ you people are all so pretentious
+Jack Stuart I agree. Some fans almost act as though you have to know a secret handshake to be a true fan. People who use music as some sort of status symbol totally miss the point of the material they endorse...its a bit ironic.
lol deep thinkers
Monie Marie. We must all meet up for a cuppa tea and a slice of cake.
So happy to see you guys back.
We listen to fleet foxes daily in our home. My children just adore your music almost as much as I do. You have a very special place in my heart and your music gives life to my sometimes broken soul. God bless you and your future music.
I've grown so much with this band, finally had the courage to solo travel the world. this music is so fitting for my life right now
My second son was just born this morning on the Third of May. I started reading the lyrics and seeing “second son” kinda blew my mind.
congratulation! that is actually so cool
There are things other than Fleet Foxes that I like. I just can't think of any right now
5 year of silence and then ....... "LIGHT ENDED THE NIGHT BUT THE SONG REMAINED" What a way to bring it back. Nothing but CHILLS nostalgia and pure excitement. Fleet Foxes have returned.
Beer in hand, it's my birthday and then this shit comes out! Fucking perfect
the album comes out on my birthday hahaha
Happy birthday)!
KingKuisma happy birthday Pisces!
KingKuisma happy birthday!
Haha you and I both!
3:46 It's like hearing the most desperate cry, buried deep within someone's soul for so long, finally being screamed for the world to hear. This song is just unbelievably sad to me.
It's great to see an older style of music hit #1 in trending. Doing good guys.
I keep trying to think of words that can express how happy I am right now, but all I can say is thank you Fleet Foxes for making new music. I've loved your music it seems like forever and my husband started listening to your music after we got together. I hope we can see you guys in a live show sometime!
NUMBER ONE ON TRENDING. You're welcome to everyone who doesn't know who Fleet Foxes are. You have been blessed.
Man. The beauty and the melancholy and the feels. Cannot wait to hear more.
IM FUCKING CRYING. THIS IS THE BEST NEWS IVE GOTTEN ALL YEAR
marv lajara indeed. plus albums of The shins, Spoon and Alt-J , 2017 is an awesome year for me.
I'm trying to hold my tears ;_;
Damo Shrine let us hold on to the last of Indie rock!
cannot agree more!!! I am dead right now.
Why? Have they not made a record in a while?

king tundra welcome, welcome. go back and listen to EVERYTHING.
Sarah Graves yes ma'am!!
Sarah Graves (you're pretty??)
Oh my I can't even describe what I just heard,WOW! PURE ECSTASY ❣
YES!!!!
Sean your work is stunning as always!!! needs to be said as well, thank you.
Together you all create a whole other world which is absolutely beautiful
YES!
thank you sir! beautiful video
Sean Pecknold don't get careless Sean.
Thank you for the great music as always!
amazing song, my sons mother was born on may 3rd. every line is a moment out of our relationship. i am beside myself from how much this song grabs a hold of my heart. i wish i found it sooner, maybe it could have saved us.
