- Ishana Night Shyamalan’s directorial debut, The Watchers, is a new folk horror movie based on a novel of the same name by A.M. Shine and starring Dakota Fanning. She's trapped, along with 3 others, in a mysterious Irish forest where they are watched by strange creatures each night.
It’s an interesting premise the leads to a mixed bag of a feature that’s technically well done but is populated by characters lacking depth. Ultimately, The Watchers spreads itself thin, seemingly not knowing which story it wants to tell.

Im so glad that I found a new movie/ media commentary channel
Glad you found this channel too, and thanks for the kind words!
What an amazing film
Just finished the movie tonight and researched as many video reviews as I could. Wasn't impressed with the movie for many reasons: (1) lack of character depth, (2) blended genres that weren't done well, and (3) I thought the ending happened at three different points. What on earth was that random faerie lesson at the end? Like RUN you guys are fighting for your lives lol.
It was a very confused movie, apparently there's time set aside to stop and talk exposition when you're running for your life. Can't say I get it either
They changed several key parts of the book and talked on that dumb "twin sister" crap.
And the forest wasn't some magical thing either. It was just a forest in the middle of nowhere and there are monsters in it.
The end of the novel is COMPLETELY different and ends in an unsettling tone.
Wooooo new vid! 🍿
honestly i enjoyed the movie a lot! until it pretended to end. and then the plot twist was AWESOME, and then the actually ending was awful.
the build up to learning what the monsters were was awesome, than the movie got kind of bland
In the book ending, Madyline comes to Mina in the guise of an old man to warn her that she was wrong- Madyline isn't unique and some of her kind are already in society- and that Mina needs to get away because they've noticed her and she isn't safe.
4:00 completely agree, the fullscreen aspect ratio is amazing and I don't understand why every movie doesn't use it.
+I like the watchers
+the irish folklore and bunker reveal
+husband's fall death was great at the beginning
-fricking jumpscares, this movie would literally be scarier without the stupid sound effects
-Dakota Fanning's acting
-This movie needed to fully commit to artsy, irish immersive folklore horror, it was caught halfway between that and generic american blumhouse teenybopper and that held it back unnecessarily.
but overall I liked it, 6/10
I fully agree that a commitment to being the folk movie it wants to be would have made the Watchers a better film. If the characters are weak, but a movie doubles down on the mystery and the lore it can still make for a really good time. Missed opportunity
8 out of 10 for me
